A distorted radio shell in the young supernova SN1986J

2002

We report here on 5 GHz global very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of SN 1986J, 16 yr after its explosion. We obtained a high-resolution image of the supernova, which shows a distorted shell of radio emission, indicative of a deformation of the shock front. The angular size of the shell is $\sim4.7 {\rm mas}$, corresponding to a linear size of $\sim6.8 \times 10^{17} {\rm cm}$ for a distance of 9.6 Mpc to NGC 891. The average speed of the shell has decreased from $\sim$7400 \kms in 1988.74 down to about $6300 {\rm km s^{-1}}$ in 1999.14, indicative of a mild deceleration in the expansion of SN 1986J. Assuming a standard density profile for the progenitor wind ($\rho_{\rm c…

VLTI-PIONIER imaging of the red supergiant V602 Carinae

2020

Context. Red supergiant stars possess surface features and extended molecular atmospheres. Photospheric convection may be a crucial factor of the levitation of the outer atmospheric layers. However, the mechanism responsible is still poorly understood. Aims. We image the stellar surface of V602 Carinae (V602 Car) to constrain the morphology and contrast of the surface features and of the extended atmospheric layers. Methods. We observed V602 Car with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) PIONIER instrument (1.53-1.78 $\mathrm{\mu}$m) between May and July 2016, and April and July 2019 with different telescope configurations. We compared the image reconstructions with 81 temporal sna…

Über eine eichung eines 7.5 × 7.5 cm - NaJ(Tl) - Vollkristalls zur absolutzählung flächenförmiger präparate

1966

Abstract The photopeak efficiency and the peak-to-total ratio for a 7.5 × 7.5 cm solid NaI(Tl)-crystal are determined in the range of 0.145–1.33 MeV. The disintegration rates of the disc sources used are known by 4 πβ -and 4 πβ - γ -coincidence measurements. The effect of the disc diameter and the distance source-crystal on the photopeak efficiency is studied thoroughly. The data obtained are compared with those of other authors. The evaluation of the photopeak area is performed in a frequency diagram, a special type of probability scale, in which both parts of the Gaussian curve are represented by straight lines. Hence, corrections for the Compton overlap, bremsstrahlung and background can…

The evolution of the meaning of blood hyperviscosity in cardiovascular physiopathology: Should we reinterpret Poiseuille?

2009

In the 1960s and 1970s, a number of researchers (including ourselves) involved in the study of cardiovascular pathophysiology and particularly in the development of techniques to quantify blood flow, came across the observation that, along with vessel diameter, also blood viscosity plays an important role not only in theory but also in practice. Until then, viscosity was thought to play only a marginal role in determining blood flow, a concept which was based on the 1828 theories of Jean Louis Marie Poiseuille (Fig. 1, and [1]).1 In his well-known formula, named after its fathers Hagen2 and Poiseuille,

Platform switching on wide-diameter external hex implants: a finite element analysis.

2012

Objectives: The objective of this work was to use finite element analysis to compare the effect of forces coming to bear on abutments 4.1 or 5.0 mm in diameter connected to a 5.0 mm implant (i.e. with or without platform swit - ching). Study design: A 3D CAD model of a 5 x 11.5 mm external hex implant was developed, complete with a connection screw and either of two abutments, one 4.1 and the other 5 mm in diameter, to assess the influence of two loading conditions, i.e. 200 N loaded either axially or off center on the top of the abutment. Results and conclusions: In the symmetrically loaded models, greater stresses were transmitted to the bone in the area below the neck of the implant in t…

Sharpness of uniform continuity of quasiconformal mappings onto s-John domains

2017

We construct examples to show the sharpness of uniform continuity of quasiconformal mappings onto $s$-John domains. Our examples also give a negative answer to a prediction in [7].

Electronic transport in intermediate sized carbon nanotubes

2009

We have studied systematically basic transport properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in a relatively unexplored diameter range, corresponding to tubes just slightly larger than single- or double-walled tubes to tubes up to 17 nm in diameter. We find in all the smaller tubes a gap in the transport data which increases with decreasing tube diameter. Within the gap region of several tubes, negative differential resistance was observed at small or moderate biases and at bias values that scaled inversely with the tube diameter. For this latter type of behavior of the conductance, we tentatively propose interlayer resonant tunneling as the cause.

Segmentation-Free Estimation of Aortic Diameters from MRI Using Deep Learning

2021

Accurate and reproducible measurements of the aortic diameters are crucial for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases and for therapeutic decision making. Currently, these measurements are manually performed by healthcare professionals, being time consuming, highly variable, and suffering from lack of reproducibility. In this work we propose a supervised deep-learning method for the direct estimation of aortic diameters. The approach is devised and tested over 100 magnetic resonance angiography scans without contrast agent. All data was expert-annotated at six aortic locations typically used in clinical practice. Our approach makes use of a 3D+2D convolutional neural network (CNN) that ta…

Influence of ocular aberrations on the diameter of retinal blood vessels

2011

Lower-order and higher-order ocular aberrations influence not only visual perception but also appearance of retinal images. We suggest that the diameter of blood vessels may differ for various patterns of aberrations based on how the maps of point spread functions are orientated to these vessels. We tested our hypothesis by a star chart simulation method and by using simulating aberrations in a real image of a living retina. We observed that broadening of the blood vessels due to ocular aberrations depends not only on the relative orientation of the wavefront but also on their actual width. The change in the diameter ratio is clinically significant and is comparable to changes in the arteri…

Small-diameter titanium Grade IV and titanium-zirconium implants in edentulous mandibles: three-year results from a double-blind, randomized controll…

2015

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare crestal bone-level changes, soft tissue parameters and implant success and survival between small-diameter implants made of titanium/zirconium (TiZr) alloy or of Grade IV titanium (Ti) in edentulous mandibles restored with removable overdentures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a randomized, controlled, double-blind, split-mouth multicenter clinical trial. Patients with edentulous mandibles received two Straumann bone-level implants (diameter 3.3 mm), one of Ti Grade IV (control) and one of TiZr (test), in the interforaminal region. Implants were loaded after 6-8 weeks and removable Locator-retained overdentures were placed within 2 weeks of l…
