Seasonal screening of AChE, GSH and gonad histology, in European sea bassDicentrarchus labraxL. reared in three different fish farms
2013
The aim of this work was to do a preliminary seasonal screening of ecotoxicological biomarkers in European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax in three different fish farms, to know if the different location and typology can discriminate them. A set of selected biomarkers of xenobiotic exposure, such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, Glutathione (GSH) and gonad morphology were investigated seasonally in male European sea bass D. labrax (L.) reared in three different intensive farms: a land-based farm of cement tanks (T), an in-shore sea cages farm (C1) and an off-shore sea cages farm (C2). The results showed that both location and typology can discriminate AChE activity, GSH content and go…

Levels of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and metals in European sea bass from fish farms in Italy
2012
The study evaluated the levels of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and metals in the fillet of medium (468 ± 92 g) and large (708 ± 135 g) European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from 11 Italian fish farms using different rearing systems. DL-PCB contamination was higher in fish grown in extensive coastal lagoons compared with intensive inland basins and intensive sea cages (28.5 vs. 9.13 and 13.1 pg Toxic Equivalents (TEQ)/g fat; P < 0.001). Copper concentrations were lower (0.810 vs. 0.993 and 1.071 mg/kg fw) and mercury was higher (0.025 vs. 0.006 and 0.003 mg/kg fw) (P < 0.001) in sea bass from extensive farms than from intensively farmed fish in inland or sea cage system…

Biochemical Responses of European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) to the Stress Induced by Off Shore Experimental Seismic Prospecting
1999
The paper reports the results of an experimental seismic survey in the open sea by an air gun, carried out to evaluate the effects of air gun acoustic waves on marine animals. Air gun blast exposition was found to have a marked influence on confined Dicentrarchus labrax. Our data, in fact, demonstrated a biochemical response to acoustic stress induced by air gun blasts. Variations of cortisol, glucose, lactate, AMP, ADP, ATP and cAMP in different tissues of D. labrax, indicate that fish have a typical primary and secondary stress response after air gun detonations. Radiography indicates that air gun blasts do not induce any macroscopic effect on skeletal apparatus. The variations of biochem…
Expression of a glucocorticoid receptor (D1GR1) in several tissues of the teleost fish Dicentrarchus labrax
2008
Since glucocorticoids have a role in maintaining the homeostatic status in fish, in the present paper mRNA expression (in situ hybridization) and tissue immunohistochemical localization of a glucocorticoid receptor (DlGR1) in several Dicentrarchus labrax organs are reported. Riboprobe and specific antibodies were prepared by using the DlGR1 that has been previously cloned and sequenced from peritoneal cavity leukocytes. Both mRNA and receptor were identified in head kidney, spleen, gills, intestine, heart and liver tissues. The functional roles of DlGR1 localization are discussed.
Fish welfare in aquaculture: From physiology to molecular activities and new tools for study innovative diets, social and spatial stress
2022
Guaranteeing a high quality of life for animals has recently become a matter of increasing concern. Welfare assessment has been well-developed for terrestrial species, mainly for those kept in captivity, but the current state of the art is less well-characterized for aquatic animals. The classical methodologies utilised to date, such as the kind of behavioural observation widely used for terrestrial animals, are not appropriate for improving our knowledge of the well-being of aquatic animals if used alone, mainly due to the large number of species and the difficulty of obtaining comparative results among the different taxa of interest. Among different approaches, the evaluation of internal …
Occurrence and virulence of Pseudoalteromonas spp. in cultured gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.).…
2007
During two long-term bacteriological surveys in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) and gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) culture facilities on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, four different species of Pseudoalteromonas were found in the internal organs of animals. Pseudoalteromonas undina, Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis, P. espejiana and Pseudoalteromonas sp. were isolated from 9% out of 177 European sea bass and 11.7% out of 547 gilthead sea bream and they were recovered as pure cultures in 50% of isolations. Among fish with positive bacterial growth, Pseudoalteromonas was more prevalent in sea bass showing clinical signs (27.7%) and in gilthead sea bream without clinical sig…
Sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) bacterial infection and confinement stress acts on F-type lectin (DlFBL) serum modulation
2014
The F-lectin, a fucose-binding protein found from invertebrates to ectothermic vertebrates, is the last lectin family to be discovered. Here, we describe effects of two different types of stressors, bacterial infection and confinement stress, on the modulation of European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) F-lectin (DlFBL), a well-characterized serum opsonin, using a specific antibody. The infection of the Vibrio alginolyticus bacterial strain increased the total haemagglutinating activity during the 16-day testing period. The DlFBL value showed an upward regulation on the first, second and last days and underwent a slight downward regulation 4 days post-challenge. In contrast, the effect o…
The effects of carnitine on the growth of sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L., fry
1986
Carnitine treatment has an appreciable effect on the hatchery-reared sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, fry. The administration of the laevorotatory isomer (1-carnitine) which is engaged in the transport of the acyl and acetyl groups through the mitochondrial membrane, stimulating lipid metabolism, increases the growth rate and the protein content of the treated fry. The dextrorotatory isomer (d-carnitine), which is an antagonist of the 1-carnitine, has an opposite effect on the growth and metabolism of the treated fry.
