Worldwide, several breeds share peculiar coat color features such as the presence of a fawn pigmentation of the calf at birth, turning over time to grey, and sexual dichromatism. Visual conditions and habitat shape the coloration of the Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.): a trade-off between camouflage and communication?

In theory, selection for effective camouflage (i.e. dull coloration) in fish should be strongest when the conditions for visual predation are most favourable, such as in structurally simple pelagic habitats. By contrast, in more sheltered (e.g. littoral) habitats, selection may favour effective intra-specific communication (i.e. bright coloration) (at the expense of crypsis). A rare observation of a male Lesser Antillean Bullfinch (Loxigilla noctis) on Barbados.

We discuss the relevance of this observation to the taxonomic status of the Barbados Bullfinch (L. barbadensis) and the evolutionary loss of sexual dichromatism.

Can female preference explain sexual dichromatism in the pied flycatcher, Ficedula hypoleuca?

How important female choice is for the evolution of male secondary sexual characteristics is controversial. Two field and one laboratory experiment, using the pied flycatcher, were performed to test the female choice aspect of sexual selection. In addition, non-manipulative data from 5 years are presented. The observational data suggest a slight preference for dark males by females but in field experiments in which males had territories at random sites (i.e. they did not choose a territory) or the colour of concurrently arriving males was altered, there was no preference for darker ones. European vipers (genus Vipera) have a characteristic dorsal zigzag pattern, which has been shown to serve as a warning signal to potential predators. Sex and population variation in ultraviolet reflectance of colour patches in Gallotia galloti (Fam. Lacertidae) from Tenerife (Canary Islands)

Sex and population differences in the ultraviolet (UV) reflectance patterns of two phenotypically divergent lacertids from Tenerife, Gallotia galloti eisentrauti and G. g. galloti, are described. Adults in both populations have rows of lateral and ventro-lateral blue patches on either side of the trunk that show a single peak of reflectance in the near UV. The lateral patches of males are more intensely reflective than those of females, but females have more chromatic and UV-shifted lateral patches than males.
