Diffractive optics for spectral tuning of second harmonic and supercontinuum generated in nonlinear crystals

2011

It is shown that diffractive lenses can tune the spectrum of femtosecond pulses after nonlinear optical processes. We focus on spectra of second-order pulses generated in birefringent crystals and supercontinuum in sapphire crystals. The tunability is achieved by changing the relative distance between the nonlinear crystal and the diffractive lens.

Effect of pressure on the structural properties and electronic band structure of GaSe

2007

The structural properties of GaSe have been investigated up to 38 GPa by monochromatic X-ray diffraction. The onset of the phase transition from the e-GaSe to a disordered NaCi-type structural motif is observed near 21 GPa. Using the experimentally determined lattice parameters of the layered e-phase as input, constrained ab-initio total energy calculations were performed in order to optimize the internal structural parameters at different pressures. The results obtained for the nearest-neighbor Ga-Se distance agree with those derived from recent EXAFS measurements. In addition, information is obtained on the changes of Ga-Ga and Se-Se bond lengths which were not accessible to a direct expe…

Melting of tantalum at high pressure determined by angle dispersive x-ray diffraction in a double-sided laser-heated diamond-anvil cell

2003

The high pressure and high temperature phase diagram of Ta has been studied in a laser-heated diamond-anvil cell (DAC) using x-ray diffraction measurements up to 52 GPa and 3800 K. The melting was observed at nine different pressures, being the melting temperature in good agreement with previous laser-heated DAC experiments, but in contradiction with several theoretical calculations and previous piston-cylinder apparatus experiments. A small slope for the melting curve of Ta is estimated (dTm/dP = 24 K/GPa at 1 bar) and a possible explanation for this behaviour is given. Finally, a P-V-T equation of states is obtained, being the temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient an…

Comment on “High-pressure x-ray diffraction study of YBO3/Eu3+, GdBO3, and EuBO3: Pressure-induced amorphization in GdBO3” [J. Appl. Phys. 115, 04350…

2014

High-pressure x-ray diffraction studies on vaterite-type borates were reported on the above paper and their room-temperature P-V equation of state (EOS) determined. YBO3/Eu3+ and GdBO3 were found to have bulk moduli around 320 GPa, 90% larger than the bulk modulus obtained for EuBO3. Consequently, it was stated that vaterite-type borates are as incompressible as cubic BN. Such a different compressional behavior of isomorphic borates contradicts the known systematic of related borates. Here, we show that the conclusions reported on the above article could be hindered by experimental errors and artifacts. Ab initio calculations support our criticism giving similar bulk moduli (130–141 GPa) in…

Ambient-temperature high-pressure-induced ferroelectric phase transition in CaMnTi2O6

2017

The ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition of multiferroic ${\mathrm{CaMnTi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ has been investigated at high pressures and ambient temperature by second-harmonic generation (SHG), Raman spectroscopy, and powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. We have found that ${\mathrm{CaMnTi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ undergoes a pressure-induced structural phase transition ($P{4}_{2}mc\ensuremath{\rightarrow}P{4}_{2}/nmc$) at $\ensuremath{\sim}7\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$ to the same paraelectric structure found at ambient pressure and ${T}_{c}=630\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The continuous linear decrease of the SHG intensity that disappears at 7 …

X-ray study of LB multilayers of cadmium soaps in the vicinity of the break up point

1991

Temperature dependent SAXS measurements were carried out on multilayers of two different salts, cadmium palmitate (hexadecanoate) and behenate (docosanoate). The pattern characteristic of layer structure disappears at a transition temperature well below the bulk melting point in both cases. Examination by means of optical microscopy shows that the LB films break up at a temperature close to this transition. Measurements in its vicinity demonstrate that over a certain temperature range just below the transition a second set of peaks arises in the diffraction pattern. During this transition region of about 3 °C width two d-spacings for both salts were found, suggesting the simultaneous existe…

In situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of the structural stability in NdVO4 and LaVO4

2014

Abstract Room-temperature angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements on zircon-type NdVO 4 and monazite-type LaVO 4 were performed in a diamond-anvil cell up to 12 GPa. In NdVO 4 , we found evidence for a non-reversible pressure-induced structural phase transition from zircon to a monazite-type structure at 6.5 GPa. Monazite-type LaVO 4 also exhibits a phase transition but at 8.6 GPa. In this case the transition is reversible and isomorphic. In both compounds the pressure induced transitions involve a large volume collapse. Finally, the equations of state and axial compressibilities for the low-pressure phases are also determined.

Wavelength-compensated time-sequential multiplexed color joint transform correlator

2010

We report a wavelength-compensated three-channel (RGB) joint transform correlator (JTC) for color pattern recognition using a ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) operating in binary pure phase modulation. We apply a previously reported time-multiplexing technique useful in creating wavelength-compensated diffraction patterns, based on the synchronization of properly scaled diffraction masks with the input wavelength selection obtained by applying a rotating RGB color-filter wheel to an Ar-Kr laser. The application of this technique to a JTC architecture permits real-time color object detection. In order to achieve a high light efficiency for the correlation process, w…

Structural properties of magnesium stearate pseudopolymorphs: effect of temperature.

2003

A thorough review of the relevant literature reveals that the interaction between water vapour and magnesium stearate, in contrast to many other metal soaps, is not properly understood. The structural modifications associated with the up-take or loss of water of vegetable-derived commercial magnesium stearate powders exposed to humid air or vacuum at room temperature are investigated using standard powder X-ray diffractometry. It is found that in such conditions magnesium stearate reacts reversibly with the vapour phase with structural consequences very similar to the high temperature transition between the crystalline and rotator phases of other anhydrous metal soaps. When temperature is i…
