Computer Simulations of the Dynamics of Amorphous Silica

We present the results of a large scale computer simulation we performed to investigate the dynamical properties of supercooled silica. We show that parallel supercomputers such as the CRAY-T3E are very well suited to solve these type of problems. We find that at low temperatures the transport properties such as the diffusion constants and the viscosity agree well with the experimental data. At high temperatures this simulation predicts that in the transport quantities significant deviations from the Arrhenius law should be observed. Gas transport through polymer membranes and free volume percolation

We consider the influence of structural and dynamical properties of a polymer membrane on the gas transport through this matrix. The diffusant and the polymer only interact through repulsive interactions. In the case of a glassy polymer, when one can consider the matrix as frozen, the gas particle diffusion is determined by the free volume structure of the system. We show how the percolation properties of the free volume show up in a subdiffusive behavior of the diffusant. A thermodynamic approach to nonlocal plasticity and related variational principles

Elastic-plastic rate-independent materials with isotropic hardening/softening of nonlocal nature are considered in the context of small displacements and strains. A suitable thermodynamic framework is envisaged as a basis of a nonlocal associative plasticity theory in which the plastic yielding laws comply with a (nonlocal) maximum intrinsic dissipation theorem. Additionally, the rate response problem for a (continuous) set of (macroscopic) material particles, subjected to a given total strain rate field, is discussed and shown to be characterized by a minimum principle in terms of plastic coefficient. Experimental nonlinear electrical reaction-diffusion lattice

International audience; A nonlinear electrical reaction-diffusion lattice modelling the Nagumo equation is presented. It is shown that this system supports front propagation with a given velocity. This propagation is observed experimentally using a video acquisition system, and the measured velocity of the front is in perfect agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Traditionally, research on conspiracy theories (CT) is not at the heart of communication and media studies. Still there are theories, concepts and findings in this discipline which can be fruitfully linked to CT research. If one sees CT as certain forms of narratives, one important question is how they spread within societies, communities and groups. To analyse this, one can apply the concept of "diffusion of innovations", alongside theories and concepts which stem from media studies, such as agenda setting or two-step flow of communication. Moreover, research on strategic and political communication, news bias and even fake news can be linked to the study of CT.

IONIC TRANSPORT ACROSS POROUS CHARGED MEMBRANES AND THE GOLDMAN CONSTANT FIELD ASSUMPTION

Starting from a simple theoretical model based on Nernst-Planck flux equations and the Donnan equilibrium relationship, the ionic transport across a porous, charged membrane is analysed and conditions are given which make exact the so-called “constant field assumption”. The validity of the reported results is later verified in the case of a well-known problem: the ionic transport across a cation-exchange membrane under bi-ionic conditions.

The electrochemistry of a novel organic−inorganic material in which 4,4‘-bipyridinium units (BP) are covalently attached to the walls of a periodic mesoporous organisilica (PMO) of the MCM-41 type is described. The pristine material (BP@PMO), having its internal space completely filled by the cetyltrimethylammonium structure-directing agent, is almost electrochemically silent. In contrast, the extracted material obtained after removal of the structure-directing agent (BP@PMO-ex) exhibits two reduction peaks at −0.36 and −0.75 V vs AgCl/Ag in contact with aqueous electrolytes.
