Distributions of oxygen, nutrient, and metabolic waste concentrations in multicellular spheroids and their dependence on spheroid parameters.

1991

The distribution of oxygen, nutrients and metabolic wastes in multicellular tumor spheroids and its dependence on the parameters characterizing the spheroid (i.e., spheroid geometry, diffusivity, and consumption/production rates of biological substances) have been investigated by a theoretical analysis: 1. Parameter dependence is qualitatively demonstrated and visualized. 2. Reduction of the number of variables by specific coordinate transformations made it possible to generate nomograms from which concentration distributions for any choice of parameter values may easily be obtained. In particular, these nomograms may also be used for estimating concentration profiles of metabolic waste pro…

Investigation of water transfer across thin layer biopolymer films by infrared spectroscopy

2011

International audience; The investigation of the apparent diffusivity of water in thin layer iota-carrageenan-based films by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy clearly evidences the fundamental role of surface properties on water transfer. Water diffusivity in iota-carrageenan based biopolymer films ranges from 0.3 to 1.3 × 10−10 m2 s−1 and is thus 10–100 times lower than that in highly hydrated carrageenan gels. The surface heterogeneity and composition when fat is added strongly influence the diffusivity by modifying the liquid water absorption at the inner surface. This study of diffusing molecules in liquid state is particularly interesting to mimic situations where direct liquid water contact occurs…

Properties of treated papers and plastic film influencing ethyl ester transfer

2008

Abstract The objective of this work was to compare and understand the aroma compound barrier property of two impregnated–supercalendered papers, with or without surface coating, and one plastic film (BOPP) in standard conditions of temperature (25 °C) and relative humidity gradient (50%) for foodstuff storage. For that purpose, solubility, diffusivity and permeability coefficients were determined for a homologous series of ethyl esters with a range of physico-chemical properties and vapor concentrations. Whatever the aroma compound and its vapor concentration, the non-coated paper was the more permeable; the coated paper and BOPP presenting close and lower permeability values. The transfer …

The effect of the internal architecture of polymer micronetwork colloids on the dynamics in highly concentrated dispersions

2007

Motivated by the finding that colloidal dispersions of polymer micronetwork spheres with a cross-link density of 1:50 (inverse number of monomer units between crosslinks) show significant deviations from the dynamics of hard spheres in the colloid glass as seen by dynamic light scattering (DLS) (E. Bartsch, V. Frenz, H. Sillescu J. Non — Cryst. Solids 172–174 (1994), 88–97), we have undertaken a systematic study of the effect of the crosslink density on the dynamics at high concentrations. Long-time self-diffusion coefficients D S L and collective diffusion coefficients D c were measured for colloids with crosslink densities of 1:10, 1:20 and 1:50 by forced Rayleigh scattering (FRS) and the…

Thermal diffusion and Soret feedback of gold-doped polyorganosiloxane nanospheres in toluene

2000

We have investigated diffusion and thermal diffusion properties of light-absorbing colloidal polyorganosiloxane microgels containing tiny nanometer-sized gold clusters dispersed in toluene. Transient holographic gratings allow for very subtle perturbations in the linear regime where Soret feedback is negligible. Gold-doped colloids of different size and crosslink ratios show different Soret coefficients but identical thermal diffusion coefficients D(T). Undoped colloids tend to aggregate, but a consistent interpretation is obtained if an identical D(T) is assumed for the doped, the undoped, and the aggregated particles. Previously reported Soret feedback measurements on similar systems inci…

Ethyl Hexanoate Transfer Modeling in Carrageenan Matrices for Determination of Diffusion and Partition Properties.

2007

; Aroma compound properties in food matrices, such as volatility and diffusivity, have to be determined to understand the effect of composition and structure on aroma release and perception. This work illustrates the use of mass transfer modeling to identify diffusion and partition properties of ethyl hexanoate in water and in carrageenan matrices with various degrees of structure. The comparison of results obtained with a diffusive model to those obtained with a convective model highlights the importance of considering the appropriate transfer mechanism. Modeling of the preliminary experimental steps ensures correct estimation of the conditions for the main aroma release step. The obtaine…

Grey matter microstructural alterations in schizophrenia patients with treatment-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations.

2021

Treatment-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations (TRAVH) are a relatively prevalent and devastating symptom in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). Even though their pathological mechanisms are poorly understood, they seem to differ from those underlying non-hallucinating SCZ.& nbsp; In this study, we characterise structural brain changes in SCZ patients with TRAVH. With respect to nonhallucinating patients and healthy controls, we studied macrostructural grey matter changes through cortical thickness and subcortical volumetric data. Additionally, we analysed microstructural differences across groups using intracortical and subcortical mean diffusivity data. This latter imaging metric has b…

Diffusional kinetics of metalliding zinc into solid copper

1982

The process of incorporation of zinc into a copper cathode has been experimentally studied in a molten salt system at 381±2° C and at various current densities. The process is shown to be kinetically controlled by the diffusion of Zn into the solid matrix. A galvanostatic pulse titration technique has been used to determine the chemical diffusion coefficient at various alloy compositions, and an exponential relationship has been found between the diffusivity and the third power of the zinc concentration in the alloy. This relationship was then used in the diffusion equation within the solid matrix and a numerical integration was performed. Very good agreement was found between the calculate…

Thermal Diffusion and Partial Molar Enthalpy Variations of n-Butane in Silicalite-1

2008

International audience; We report for the first time the heat of transfer and the Soret coefficient for n-butane in silicalite-1. The heat of transfer was typically 10 kJ/mol. The Soret coefficient was typically 0.006 K−1 at 360 K. Both varied with the temperature and the concentration. The thermal conductivity of the crystal with butane adsorbed was 1.46 ±0.07 W/Km. Literature values of the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption, the concentration at saturation, and the diffusion coefficients were reproduced. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were used to find these results, and a modified heat exchange algorithm, Soft-HEX, was developed for the purpose. Enthalpies of butane were al…
