The case for simplifying and using absolute targets for viral hepatitis elimination goals

2021

The 69th World Health Assembly endorsed the Global Health Sector Strategy for Viral Hepatitis, embracing a goal to eliminate hepatitis infection as a public health threat by 2030. This was followed by the World Health Organization's (WHO) global targets for the care and management of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. These announcements and targets were important in raising awareness and calling for action; however, tracking countries’ progress towards these elimination goals has provided insights to the limitations of these targets. The existing targets compare a country's progress relative to its 2015 values, penalizing countries who started their programmes …

Feeding Dairy Ewes with Fresh or Dehydrated Sulla (Sulla coronarium L.) Forage. 1. Effects on Feed Utilization, Milk Production, and Oxidative Status

2022

Feeding dairy ewes with fresh sulla forage (FSF), a legume species containing condensed tannins (CT), has been shown to increase feed intake, milk yield, and casein and enhances the oxidative status of animals. Dehydration of FSF could be an alternative to hay-making to preserve the nutritional properties. This research aimed to compare the responses of dairy ewes fed with diets based on sulla hay (SH), pelleted dehydrated sulla forage (DSF), or FSF in terms of efficiency of feed utilization, milk production, and the balance between oxidant (reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs)) and antioxidant (biological antioxidant potential (BAP)) substances at the plasma level. Ten first-lambing (FL) and…

RESEARCHES ON THE DIGESTERS AND REACTORS WHICH CAN BE USED IN A FARM SCALE BIOGAS PLANT

2014

In the general context of searching integrated system of renewable energy production, this paper present some researches on the reactors and the digesters, as a main part of a biogas plant at a farm scale. After we present the most used types of digesters, we also concentrated over the processes which take place into a digester, one of them being the removal of H2S from biogas (desulphurisation), which can be made by various methods, either biological or chemical, taking place inside or outside the digester. In the case of biological desulphurization outside the digester, we concentrate on the types of reactors which can be used in this case. Beside the well known types of reactors, we pres…

Cannabidiol treatment might promote resilience to cocaine and methamphetamine use disorders: A review of possible mechanisms

2019

Currently, there are no approved pharmacotherapies for addiction to cocaine and other psychostimulant drugs. Several studies have proposed that cannabidiol (CBD) could be a promising treatment for substance use disorders. In the present work, the authors describe the scarce preclinical and human research about the actions of CBD on the effects of stimulant drugs, mainly cocaine and methamphetamine (METH). Additionally, the possible mechanisms underlying the therapeutic potential of CBD on stimulant use disorders are reviewed. CBD has reversed toxicity and seizures induced by cocaine, behavioural sensitization induced by amphetamines, motivation to self-administer cocaine and METH, context- …

Supplementary Material for: Cabozantinib in Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Efficacy and Safety Data from an International Multicenter Real-Life C…

2021

Background and Aims: The multikinase inhibitor cabozantinib has been approved for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) previously treated with sorafenib. We report safety and efficacy data of an international, multicenter, real-life cohort of patients with advanced HCC treated with cabozantinib. Methods: Patients with HCC who were treated with cabozantinib were retrospectively identified across 11 centers in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. Patients’ characteristics, adverse events, duration of treatment and overall survival (OS) data were analyzed until April 1, 2020. Results: Eighty-eight patients from 11 centers were included. The predominant underlying liver diseases were NAFLD/NASH in 26 (…

Supplementary Material for: REal life study of LEnVAtiNib therapy for HepAtocellular carcinoma: RELEVANT study

2022

Introduction: In the REFLECT trial, lenvatinib was found to be non-inferior compared to sorafenib in terms of Overall Survival. Here, we analyze the effects of lenvatinib in the real-life experience of several centers across the world, and to identify clinical factors that could be significantly associated with survival outcomes. Methods: The study population derived from retrospectively collected data of HCC patients treated with lenvatinib. The overall cohort included Western and Eastern populations from 23 centres in five countries. Results: We included 1325 patients with HCC and treated with lenvatinib in our analysis. Median OS was 16.1 months. Overall response rate was 38.5%. Multivar…

A PTEN inhibitor displays preclinical activity against hepatocarcinoma cells

2016

Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) gene is considered a tumor suppressor gene. However, PTEN mutations rarely occur in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), whereas heterozygosity of PTEN, resulting in reduced PTEN expression, has been observed in 32–44% of HCC patients. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the small molecule PTEN inhibitor VO-OHpic in HCC cells. VO-OHpic inhibited cell viability, cell proliferation and colony formation, and induced senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity in Hep3B (low PTEN expression) and to a lesser extent in PLC/PRF/5 (high PTEN expression) cells, but not in PTEN-negative SNU475 cells. VO-OHpic synergistically inhibited cell viability…

Incident colorectal cancer in Lynch syndrome is usually not preceded by compromised quality of colonoscopy

2019

Background: Lifetime incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) especially in carriers of MLH1 and MSH2 pathogenic germline variants in mismatch repair genes is high despite ongoing colonoscopy surveillance. Lynch syndrome (LS) registries have been criticized for not reporting colonoscopy quality adequately. Methods: Prospective follow-up data from the national registry were combined with a retrospective assessment of the colonoscopy reports from Helsinki University Hospital electronic patients records in 2004–2019. Results: Total of 366 MLH1, MSH2 and MSH6 carriers underwent 1564 colorectal endoscopies (mean 4.3 per patient, range 1–10) at a single unit. At least one subsequent examination was p…
