La discrimination numérique dans l’organisation
2010
The digital divide in the world of education at the time of Covid-19
2021
Education in the digital age uses new intelligent technologies as enabling and daily tools at the service of learning. Education has always been a challenge and today it is even more so since, given the many difficulties of the moment, to support the school in the time of Covid-19 it is necessary to implement rapid and timely changes that require, in addition to high investments, also new ways of sharing knowledge. Only by acting in this direction is it possible to make a virtue of necessity and transform the many critical issues, due to the pandemic causes, into strategic opportunities. The spread of Covid-19 has forced 80% of students around the world to not go to school and stay at home,…
Gender Digital Divide and Education in Latin America: A Literature Review
2021
Gender equity in education is one of the main targets for social justice and sustainable development. This literature review, from a gender approach, was conducted to understand how the gender digital divide (GDD) in information and communication technologies (ICT) and education are related in Latin American countries. A total of 28 articles have been analyzed as a satisfactory sample of the scientific literature to examine how this relation is explored and its influence, to acknowledge political stakeholders, as well as provide information and proposals to address the digital gender divide in education research in this region. The results show the need to develop research from the pedagogi…
Intermediaries: bridges across the digital divide
2012
The challenge of bringing developing countries into the “information society” has been traditionally framed as bridging the digital divide. Meeting this challenge has predominantly been through technical solutions aimed at providing physical access to the Internet. Yet, other aspects of the divide such as low literacy rates, gender and religious issues arguably pose bigger hurdles in getting the benefits of the Internet to the vast majority of the population of developing countries. They are seldom aware of the information available on the net and even when they are, they have difficulty using it. To facilitate access and use of the Internet by the population, an intermediary is often neede…
Mobile money and the impact of mobile phone regulatory enforcement among the urban poor in Tanzania
2021
Mobile money provides a tool for survival, particularly in urban conditions shaped by city regulations that make microvending difficult for the poor. An analysis of 165 interviews conducted in two low-income neighborhoods in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania over 8 years demonstrates how interlocked layers of technology and interaction make mobile money services semiformal. I introduce two mobile money-enabled survival strategies: intrahousehold transfers for day-to-day survival (transfers within the same city) and resource safeguarding through kin remittances of start-up capital (home-based subsistence business capital stored for kin access in emergencies). The recent tightening of mobile phone regu…
Mobile phone use before and during the COVID-19 pandemic : a panel study of older adults in seven countries
2023
The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in older adults’ mobile phone use from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic. The media displacement and digital divide approaches served as the theoretical frameworks of the study. The data were drawn from the 2018 and 2020 waves of the Aging + Communication + Technology cross-national longitudinal panel study. The sample consisted of older Internet users, aged 62 to 96 (in 2018), from Austria, Canada, Finland, Israel, the Netherlands, Romania, and Spain, who participated in both waves (N = 4,398). Latent class analysis and latent transition analysis with multinomial regression models were the main methods applied to the data. With rega…
ADOLESCENTES, REDES SOCIALES Y APRENDIZAJE DIGITAL. UN ESTUDIO DE CASO
2015
Utilizing ICT to prevent loneliness and social isolation of the elderly. A literature review
2016
Ageing of the population is a worldwide phenomenon. Numerous ICT-based solutions have been developed for elderly care but mainly connected to the physiological and nursing aspects in services for the elderly. Social work is a profession that should pay attention to the comprehensive wellbeing and social needs of the elderly. Many people experience loneliness and depression in their old age, either as a result of living alone or due to a lack of close family ties and reduced connections with their culture of origin, which results in an inability to participate actively in community activities (Singh & Misra, 2009). Participation in society would enhance the quality of life. With the deve…
