A radioimmunoassay using N-[3-(4-hydroxy-3-[4-hydroxy-3- [125I]iodophenylpropionyl)]-5-methoxytryptamine as tracer for determination of melatonin in the serum of different species is described. Melatonin antisera were raised in rabbits by immunization with a bovine serum albumin conjugate of N-[3-(2-aminoethyl)-5-methoxy indole] hemisuccinamide. A single high affinity, specific antiserum was obtained. In contrast to previous studies, the tracer was synthesised in one step in the absence of water, giving an excellent yield of highly pure product. No chromatographic purification step was needed. The evaluation of sperm motion is crucial for processing of seminal doses for artificial insemination. Here, the combined effect of the type and capture area of three counting chambers, together with the type of diluent employed, on sperm motility was analysed. Ejaculates from thirteen Holstein bulls were used for sperm kinematic analysis with the ISAS® v1 CASA-Mot system, using two capillary-loaded counting chambers (Leja® and Cell-Vu® ) and one drop displacement chamber (Makler® ). The aim of this study was to evaluate if antibiotic prophylaxis reduces the bacterial contamination of bone particles collected directly from the burs used for implant site preparation. Thirty-four patients underwent the surgical procedures for a total of 34 implant sites. One 1 gr. tablet of amoxicillin + clavulanic acid was given to the test group 12 hours and 1 hour before the surgery. The control group did not take antibiotic prophylaxis. The exocrine pancreas is rich in gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT, EC 2.3.2.2) and exhibits high rates of amino acid transport and protein synthesis. The role of the gamma-glutamyl cycle in mediating neutral amino acid transport in the isolated perfused rat pancreas was investigated using acivicin, an inhibitor of GGT, and a rapid dual isotope dilution technique. When treatment in vivo with acivicin (50 mg/kg) was followed 1 h later by continuous perfusion of the isolated pancreas with 10 microM acivicin, GGT levels decreased from 53 +/- 3 IU/g to 4.9 +/- 1.5 IU/g.
