Entropic approach to estimate the mean flow velocity: experimental investigation in laboratory flumes

2015

The paper deals with the linear entropic relationship between the maximum velocity, u max , and the mean flow velocity, u m , through a dimensionless parameter Φ(M), in open-channel flow. The analysis is conducted with the aid of experimental data collected in straight laboratory flumes under different bed and side-walls roughness conditions. In particular, rough/vegetated beds and smooth/rough side-walls conditions have been investigated. The results show that, in the investigated conditions (with exception of low-submergence vegetated bed—h/k v  < 2), Φ(M) can be assumed equal to a value that is very close to that found in natural channels. This demonstrates that Φ(M) is able to implicitl…

Three-dimensional features in burning plasmas

2019

A next major step in the research toward magnetic fusion energy production is to carry out experimental campaigns exploring regimes with relevant amount of fusion power. So far, the theoretical knowledge of the path toward a fusion burning plasma has been acquired mainly by performing numerical studies in 0 or 1-1.5 dimensions. Due to the marked anisotropy of magnetically confined plasmas, however, three-dimensional effects might play a role. In particular, the drastic change in magnetic topology associated with reconnecting modes on selected rational magnetic surfaces [1] may decrease the thermal electron conductivity parallel to the magnetic field lines, with a consequent impact on the el…

Modalità e tipologie dell’epica normanna tra Francia, Inghilterra e Italia meridionale

2017

Unsupervised deep feature extraction of hyperspectral images

2014

This paper presents an effective unsupervised sparse feature learning algorithm to train deep convolutional networks on hyperspectral images. Deep convolutional hierarchical representations are learned and then used for pixel classification. Features in lower layers present less abstract representations of data, while higher layers represent more abstract and complex characteristics. We successfully illustrate the performance of the extracted representations in a challenging AVIRIS hyperspectral image classification problem, compared to standard dimensionality reduction methods like principal component analysis (PCA) and its kernel counterpart (kPCA). The proposed method largely outperforms…

Subsecond fluorine-19 MRI of the lung

2006

Minimal scan times in rapid fluorine-19 MRI using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) have been on the order of 10 s. Because of the very short T1 relaxation time of SF6 (T1 = 1.65 ms), high receiver bandwidths are necessary to allow for a high number of excitations. Since high bandwidths cause high levels of electronic noise, SNR per acquisition has been too low to further reduce scan time. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether scan times could be reduced using hexafluoroethane (C2F6), a gas with a longer T1 (T1 = 7.9 ms) at a relatively low bandwidth of 488 Hz/pixel. Gradient-echo images were acquired during and after completion of the wash-in of a 70% C2F6- 30% O2 mixture. Peak SNR …

Sidelobe decline in single-photon 4Pi microscopy by Toraldo rings.

2003

We demonstrate theoretically the feasibility of single-photon 4Pi-confocal microscopy. By inserting a pair of properly designed multi-ring phase-only pupil filters in the illumination path of a 4Pi microscope the height of the sidelobes of the point spread function substantially reduced, so that there is no ambiguity in the 3D image. Then, an axial resolution up to four times higher than that of single-photon confocal microscope can be effectively achieved.

Political Theorizing as a Dimension of Political Life

2005

Quentin Skinner’s thesis ‘that political life itself sets the main problems for the political theorist’ marks a turning point in the study of the history of political thought. The Protestant princes who revised Luther’s doctrine of disobedience in order to save Lutheranism as a political force are the best example of this ‘Skinnerian revolution’ in The Foundations of Modern Political Thought. This is in accordance with his claim that principles play a legitimating and innovating role in politics. A tacit implication of the thesis is that we should not only read theorists as politicians but also read politicians as theorists. The politician possesses a special competence in discerning betwe…

Inimer-Promoted Synthesis of Branched and Hyperbranched Polylactide Copolymers

2009

A series of (hyper)branched poly(l-lactide)(PLLA) copolymers has been prepared by ring-opening multibranching copolymerization of l-lactide with a hydroxyl-functional (ABB′) lactone inimer, 5HDON (5-hydroxymethyl-1,4-dioxane-2-on). Polymerization was conducted in bulk and solution and catalyzed either by stanneous-2-ethyl hexanoate (Sn(Oct)2) or an organic base, 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD). Precise structural characterization of the resulting branched copolyester structures was accomplished by a combination of 2D NMR techniques, relying on the comparison with model compounds. The 5HDON inimer was employed in 1% to 20% fractions and is incorporated either as a dendritic unit or…

"Writing biochips": high-resolution droplet-to-droplet manufacturing of analytical platforms.

2022

The development of high-resolution molecular printing allows the engineering of analytical platforms enabling applications at the interface between chemistry and biology, i.e. in biosensing, electronics, single-cell biology, and point-of-care diagnostics. Their successful implementation stems from the combination of large area printing at resolutions from sub-100 nm up to macroscale, whilst controlling the composition and the volume of the ink, and reconfiguring the deposition features in due course. Similarly to handwriting pens, the engineering of continuous writing systems tackles the issue of the tedious ink replenishment between different printing steps. To this aim, this review articl…
