A Two-Dimensional Approach to Rubber V-Belt Mechanics
2010
A new two-dimensional approach to the mechanics of rubber V-belt CVT's takes into account the change, along the belt sides, of the sliding velocity on the pulley walls, together with the cross section rotation due to the shear forces. The results show significant differences with the one-dimensional thin belt model and point out the gradual increase or decrease of the belt curvature in the entrance and exit regions of the contact arc, which implies the negligibility of the belt arching in the free spans. Some experimental tests on the global variables of a rubber belt CVT indicate a very fine acceptability of the theoretical model.
STUDIO DI UNA FRIZIONE MAGNETOREOLOGICA PER AUTOVEICOLI
2013
On some issues in the computational modelling of spacer-filled channels for membrane distillation
2017
Abstract This study addresses issues which arise in the computational and experimental modelling of flow and heat/mass transfer in membrane distillation and other processes adopting spacer-filled channels (either planar or spiral wound), but have not been sufficiently clarified in the literature so far. Most of the argumentations presented are based on original computational results obtained by the authors by finite volume simulations; some literature results are also considered. The questions addressed regard the choice of scales for the reduction of data and the definition of dimensionless numbers ( Re , f , Nu , Sh ); the definition of average heat or mass transfer coefficients; the comb…

Large-Scale Available Bandwidth Measurements: Interference in Current Techniques
2011
The end-to-end available bandwidth of an Internet path is a desirable information that can be exploited to optimize system performance. Several tools have been proposed in the past to estimate it. However, existing measurement techniques were not designed for large-scale deployments. In this paper we show that current tools do not properly work where multiple probing processes share a portion of a path. We provide experimental evidence to quantify the impact of mutual interference between measurements. We further analyze the characteristics of popular tools, quantifying (i) the impact of mutual interference, (ii) the total overhead imposed to the network and (iii) the intrusiveness of the m…
An Intelligent Car Driver for safe Navigation with Fuzzy Obstacle Avoidance.
2009
In order to respond effectively to the environment uncertainties, autonomous vehicles are generally equipped with sensors. The proposed car guidance system is equipped with an intelligent controller, based on fuzzy logic, which calculates the speed and wheels orientation in order to follow a path while it is avoiding unknown obstacles. Better fluidity of driving are obtained using future-path, car dimension and car position prevision. Vehicle symmetries also speed-up and simplify the guidance system reducing the inputs and the rules numbers.
ConformalALU: A Conformal Geometric Algebra Coprocessor for Medical Image Processing
2015
Medical imaging involves important computational geometric problems, such as image segmentation and analysis, shape approximation, three-dimensional (3D) modeling, and registration of volumetric data. In the last few years, Conformal Geometric Algebra (CGA), based on five-dimensional (5D) Clifford Algebra, is emerging as a new paradigm that offers simple and universal operators for the representation and solution of complex geometric problems. However, the widespread use of CGA has been so far hindered by its high dimensionality and computational complexity. This paper proposes a simplified formulation of the conformal geometric operations (reflections, rotations, translations, and uniform …
Synthetic phenomenology and high-dimensional buffer hypothesis
2012
Synthetic phenomenology typically focuses on the analysis of simplified perceptual signals with small or reduced dimensionality. Instead, synthetic phenomenology should be analyzed in terms of perceptual signals with huge dimensionality. Effective phenomenal processes actually exploit the entire richness of the dynamic perceptual signals coming from the retina. The hypothesis of a high-dimensional buffer at the basis of the perception loop that generates the robot synthetic phenomenology is analyzed in terms of a cognitive architecture for robot vision the authors have developed over the years. Despite the obvious computational problems when dealing with high-dimensional vectors, spaces wit…
Investigating Perceptual Features for a Natural Human - Humanoid Robot Interaction Inside a Spontaneous Setting
2013
The present paper aims to validate our research on human-humanoid interaction (HHI) using the minimalistic humanoid robot Telenoid. We have conducted human-robot interactions test with 100 young people with no prior interaction experience with this robot. The main goal is the analysis of the two social dimension (perception and believability) useful for increasing the natural behavior between users and Telenoid. We administrated our custom questionnaire to these subjects after a well defined experimental setting (ordinary and goal-guided task). After the analysis of the questionnaires, we obtained the proof that perceptual and believability conditions are necessary social dimensions for a s…
Visual Re-Ranking for Multi-Aspect Information Retrieval
2017
We present visual re-ranking, an interactive visualization technique for multi-aspect information retrieval. In multi-aspect search, the information need of the user consists of more than one aspect or query simultaneously. While visualization and interactive search user interface techniques for improving user interpretation of search results have been proposed, the current research lacks understanding on how useful these are for the user: whether they lead to quantifiable benefits in perceiving the result space and allow faster, and more precise retrieval. Our technique visualizes relevance and document density on a two-dimensional map with respect to the query phrases. Pointing to a locat…
