Training-induced protection and effect of terminated training on exercise-induced damage and water content in mouse skeletal muscles.
1995
Muscle swelling in connection with training-induced protection against exercise-induced damage and the disappearance of the protective adaptation after termination of training was studied in male NMRI-mice, aged 8 weeks at the beginning of the experiment. Mice were randomly assigned to several different treatment groups (training, training-exercise, exercise, detraining, detraining-exercise, together with their respective controls). Training and prolonged exercise sessions were performed by running uphill (6 degrees) on a motor-driven treadmill. Muscle damage was estimated by the total activity of beta-glucuronidase and water content from the red parts of m. quadriceps femoris (MQF), m. sol…
Regional cerebral blood flow and regional metabolism in cold induced oedema.
1973
24 hours following a cold induced oedema in cats rCBF was measured in the lesion area, the bluish stained cortex immediately adjacent to the lesion, a cortical area remote from the lesion, and in the contralateral uninjured hemisphere. Thereafter the brain was frozen and the respective tissue areas were removed and analyzed for water and electrolyte content as well as metabolite concentrations. It seems, that in the neighbourhood of a local lesion at least 3 different brain regions can be differentiated with regard to their characteristic pattern of data. In non-oedematous regions either hyperaemia or hypoaemia could be observed. In areas with local brain oedema rCBF was reduced inversely p…
Evidence for Impaired Hepatic Vitamin K1 Metabolism in Patients Treated with N-Methyl-Thiotetrazole Cephalosporins
1984
SummaryIn 8 patients on no oral intake and with parenteral alimentation, administration of cephalosporins with N-methyl-thiotetrazole side chain (moxalactam, cefamandole), was associated with prolongation of prothrombin time, appearance in the circulation of descarboxy-prothrombin (counter immunoelectrophoresis and echis carinatus assay) and diminution of protein C. Acute administration of 10 mg vitamin Ki was followed by the transient appearance of vitamin K1 2,3-epoxide, indicating an impaired hepatocellular regeneration of vitamin K1 from the epoxide. Impaired hepatic vitamin K1 metabolism, tentatively ascribed to the N-methyl-thiotetrazole group, is one (but possibly not the only) cause…
Approximation through suffixation:-ḍḍu/-a in Sicilian
2023
This article investigates the use of the Sicilian suffix -ḍḍu/-afor the expression of ap-proximation. On the basis of a survey of a corpus of ethnotexts and the outputs of a translation questionnaire, we propose that approximation is a core value in the semantic network of the suffix, expressing a certain distance fromthe default values conveyed by the base. In terms of prototypi-cality, this distance may occur from the categorial centre (internal approximation): the suffix mod-ifies the semantics of the base but does not alter the categorial status of the referent. Alternatively, the suffix may impact on categorial membership tout court (external approximation), questioning the categorial …
The effect of oral hormone replacement therapy on lipoprotein profile, resistance of LDL to oxidation and LDL particle size
2001
Abstract Objectives: To disclose if oral estradiol (E 2 ), alone or in combination with natural progesterone (P) or medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), may modify the oxidizability of low density lipoprotein (LDL), and if the effect is achieved at physiological dosages. LDL oxidizability was assessed by the resistance to oxidation by copper and by the particle size profile, since small particles have increased oxidation susceptibility. Methods: Thirty-three women received two consecutive, two-month length doses of 1 and 2 mg/day of oral E 2 . They were then randomly assigned to a fourteen-day treatment of 2 mg/day E 2 plus either 300 mg/day P or 5 mg/day MPA. A parallel group of experiments …
Chronic consumption of an inositol-enriched beverage ameliorates endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes
2015
The anti-diabetic properties of an inositol-enriched beverage (IEB) on the endothelial function and redox status in diabetic subjects were assessed. This was a 12-week, double-blind randomized controlled trial employing thirty-eight diabetic subjects that were divided into two intervention groups: one receiving an IEB and the other a sucrose-enriched beverage. Subjects consuming IEB exhibited a significant decrease in triacylglycerol (8.82%) and HbA1c (4.53%) levels. Continuous glucose monitoring revealed a significant net reduction of 2.51 and 7.11% during postprandial and overnight fasting periods after consumption of IEB, respectively. Moreover, IEB improved endothelial function by reduc…
Combined effects of aging and a pro-diabetic diet on retinal function in a murine model of aging of the human eye
2009
; Purpose: Improvement of life expectancy and changes in the dietary behaviour of developed populations are accompanied with the prevalence of diabetes and age-related ocular pathologies. Aging of the retina is characterized by accumulation of lipids at the basement of the retinal pigment epithelium - Bruch’s membrane complex.Meanwhile increased oxidative stress is one of the features of aging and diabetes. A fructose-rich diet induces insulin resistance and hypertriglyceridemia, mimicking diabetes. The goal of our study was to evaluate the effects of a pro-diabetic fructose-enriched diet on the retinal function of the ApoB100,LDLR-/- mice, a murine model of aging of the human eye. Methods…
Association of transcatheter direct mitral annuloplasty with acute anatomic, haemodynamic, and clinical outcomes in severe mitral valve regurgitation.
2020
Abstract Aims Several approaches for transcatheter mitral valve repair for functional mitral valve regurgitation are established. Interventional direct annuloplasty is a novel trans‐venous, trans‐septal approach. While feasibility was proven recently, knowledge on its influence on cardiac dimensions, pressures, biomarkers, and clinical outcomes is sparse. Methods and results Patients consecutively treated with direct annuloplasty‐only procedures between December 2015 and April 2018 were included in this monocentric analysis. Echocardiographic measurements, biomarker levels, clinical status [New York Heart Association (NYHA) class and 6 min walk test] were assessed at baseline, at discharge,…
