A new tool to process forecast meteorological data for atmospheric pollution dispersion simulations of accident scenarios: A Sicily-based case study
2021
Emergency response plans to mitigate the severity of the accidental release of hazardous compounds in the air have become a primary concern in view of the many adverse events occurred over the years in high-risk plants. To do this, an accurate estimate of forecast meteorological data to be used in dispersion models can be very useful to respond in advance to emergency situations. In this field, FORCALM is a new tool developed to elaborate European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts data on a 3D computational domain with a high-resolution grid. FORCALM data can be used to perform predictive simulations of impacts on local and regional levels by using CALPUFF modelling system. A case s…
Formulations and valid inequalities for the capacitated dispersion problem
2023
This work focuses on the capacitated dispersion problem for which we study several mathematical formulations in different spaces using variables associated with nodes, edges, and costs. The relationships among the presented formulations are investigated by comparing the projections of the feasible sets of the LP relaxations onto the subspace of natural variables. These formulations are then strengthened with families of valid inequalities and variable-fixing procedures. The separation problems associated with the valid inequalities that are exponential in number are shown to be polynomially solvable by reducing them to longest path problems in acyclic graphs. The dual bounds obtained from s…
Surface modification of luminescent lanthanide phosphate nanorods with cationic "Quat-primer" polymers.
2011
"Quat-primer" polymers bearing cationic groups were investigated as a surface modifier for Tb-doped cerium phosphate green-emitting fluorescent nanorods (NRs). The NRs were synthesized by a microwave process without using any complex agents or ligands and were characterized with different analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Poly(ethyleneimine) partially quarternized with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride was synthesized separately and characterized in detail. (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopic studies revealed that the quaternary ammonium group was covalently attached to the polymer. UV-vis spectroscopy was used to exam…
Recycling ground tire rubber (GTR) scraps as high-impact filler of in situ produced polyketone matrix
2014
A sustainable procedure for recycling powdered rubber coming from scrap tires (ground tire rubber [GTR]) is proposed as based on the dispersion in polyketone (PK) matrix, obtained in situ by CO/ethylene copolymerization. Three types of catalysts are used operative in solvents of different polarities. The catalyst productivity and the hybrids morphology are evaluated and optimized to final composites features. The obtained products are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and solvent extractions in order to investigate the occurrence and the extent of interactions between PK macromolecular chains and the GTR components; and their effects on the final proper…
Determination of Synchronization of Electrical Activity in the Heart by Shannon Entropy Measure
2005
In this paper we propose a new index of synchronization for the study of heart’s electrical activity during atrial fibrillation (AF). The index relies on the measure of the time delays between correspondent activations in two atrial electrograms and on the characterization of their dispersion by a measure of Shannon Entropy. The algorithm was validated on simulated signals mimicking different degree of synchronization. Results showed the index was able to discriminate among different levels of organization, provided that it works on series of at least 50 activations (time resolution of almost 10 sec during AF). Moreover, we applied the algorithm to real bipolar electrograms, obtained from a…
Comparison of transflection and transmission FTIR imaging measurements performed on differentially fixed tissue sections
2015
The widespread and cost-effective use of transflection substrates in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging of clinical samples is affected by the presence of artefacts including the electric field standing wave (EFSW) and contributions from light dispersion. For IR-based diagnostics, the manifestation of undesirable artifacts can distort the spectra and lead to erroneous diagnosis. Nevertheless, there is no clear consensus in the literature about the degree of influence of these effects. The aim of this work is to contribute to this discussion by comparing transflection and transmission images of the same tissue. For this purpose two adjacent sections of the same tissue (lymphoma sample…
Synthesis of Mesoporous Supraparticles on Superamphiphobic Surfaces
2015
A method for mesoporous supraparticle synthesis on superamphiphobic surfaces is designed. Therefore, supraparticles assembled with nanoparticles are synthesized by the evaporation of nanoparticle dispersion drops on the superamphiphobic surface. For synthesis, no further purification is required and no organic solvents are wasted. Moreover, by changing the conditions such as drop size and concentration, supraparticles of different sizes, compositions, and architectures are fabricated.
Exposure assessment of a burning ground for chemical ammunition on the Great War battlefields of Verdun
2007
The destruction of arsenical shells from the 1914/18 war in the vicinity of Verdun (France) during the 1920s resulted in a locally limited but severe soil contamination by arsenic and heavy metals. At the study site, the main part of the contaminant inventory occurs in the upper 20 cm of the topsoil which is essentially composed of combustion residues. Besides, some Cu (cmax.=16,877 mg/kg) and Pb (cmax.=26,398 mg/kg) in this layer, As (cmax.=175,907 mg/kg) and Zn (cmax.=133,237 mg/kg) were detected in very high concentrations. The mobilities of Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn in the soil system were derived from ammonium nitrate eluates. They are strongly influenced by the soil pH and can be described by…
Nearly zero ultraflattened dispersion in photonic crystal fibers.
2000
We present a procedure for achieving photonic crystal fibers with nearly zero ultraflattened group-velocity dispersion. Systematic knowledge of the special guiding properties of these fibers permits the achievement of qualitatively novel dispersion curves. Unlike the behavior of conventional fibers, this new type of dispersion behavior permits remarkably improved suppression of third-order dispersion, particularly in the low-dispersion domain.
In this work we present and compare the results obtained iwth three different codes (FLEXPART, CALPUFF and ldX) for the atmospheric dispersion of radioactive pollutants. The codes are compared on a single simulation of a possible incident release in the Gösgen (CH) nuclear power plant with weather conditions that a…
