Chemi- and Bioluminescence of Cyclic Peroxides

Bioluminescence is a phenomenon that has fascinated mankind for centuries. Today the phenomenon and its sibling, chemiluminescence, have impacted society with a number of useful applications in fields like analytical chemistry and medicine, just to mention two. In this review, a molecular-orbital perspective is adopted to explain the chemistry behind chemiexcitation in both chemi- and bioluminescence. Photoinduced chemiluminescence of pharmaceuticals

Abstract A screening test for the forward development of chemiluminescence systems able to determine pharmaceutical compounds is reported. The test is based on the on-line photodegradation of the drugs by using a photoreactor consisting of 697 cm × 0.5 mm PTFE tubing helically coiled around an 8 W low-pressure mercury lamp. Photodegraded pharmaceuticals are detected by direct chemiluminescence of the resulting photofragments and their subsequent reaction with potassium permanganate in sulphuric acid medium as oxidant. Utility of laser microdissection and pressure catapulting in the diagnosis of non small cell lung cancer: Preliminary data

Background: There are controversies about the adequacy of tumor tissue sample on which the sequencing of molecular diagnosis could be performed to achieve the targeted-therapy on lung cancer. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the role of the Laser Microdissection Pressure Catapulting (LMPC) technique to obtain adequate tumor tissue sample for the molecular analysis of gene mutations in the target therapy of lung cancer. Prognostic Factors in Childhood Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma: Long Term Results of the International ALCL99 Trial

With the aim of describing the long-term follow-up and to define the prognostic role of the clinical/pathological/molecular characteristics at diagnosis for childhood, adolescent and young adults affected by anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), we analyzed 420 patients aged up to 22 years homogeneously treated within the international ALCL99 trial. The 10-year progression free survival (PFS) was 70% and overall survival was 90%, rare late relapses occurred but no secondary malignancies were reported. Among clinical/pathological characteristics, only patients presenting a small cell/lymphohistiocytic (SC/LH) pattern were independently associated with risk of failure (hazard ratio = 2.49). …

Cloning of Rac and Rho-GDI from tobacco using an heterologous two-hybrid screen.

International audience; To examine whether molecular similarities exist between the animal and plant Rho GTPase signaling pathways, we have developed a heterologous two-hybrid screening method. By this technique, we have cloned a cDNA encoding a tobacco Rac-like protein able to interact with a mammalian Rho-GDI. In a second screen this tobacco Rac was used as a bait and a tobacco homologue of Rho-GDI was identified. These results show that some components of the animal and plant Rac signaling pathways are similar enough to allow their interaction in an heterologous approach. Moreover these data suggest a similar regulation of Rho GTPases in animals and plants.

Neuroglobin and Other Hexacoordinated Hemoglobins Show a Weak Temperature Dependence of Oxygen Binding

AbstractMouse and human neuroglobins, as well as the hemoglobins from Drosophila melanogaster and Arabidopsis thaliana, were recombinantly expressed in Escherichia coli, and their ligand-binding properties were studied versus temperature. These globins have a common feature of being hexacoordinated (via the distal histidine) under deoxy conditions, as evidenced by a large amplitude for the alpha absorption band at 560nm and the Soret band at 426nm. The transition from the hexacoordinated form to the CO bound species is slow, as expected for a replacement reaction Fe-His → Fe → FeCO. Introduction Aneurysms of the ascending aorta (AA) correspond to a dilatation of the ascending aorta that progressively evolves over several years. The main complication of aneurysms of the ascending aorta is type A aortic dissection, which is associated with very high rates of morbidity and mortality.
