Validation of the Strain Assessment of a Phantom of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Comparison of Results Obtained From Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ste…

2018

Predicting aortic aneurysm ruptures is a complex problem that has been investigated by many research teams over several decades. Work on this issue is notably complex and involves both the mechanical behavior of the artery and the blood flow. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide measurements concerning the shape of an organ and the blood that flows through it. Measuring local distortion of the artery wall is the first essential factor to evaluate in a ruptured artery. This paper aims to demonstrate the feasibility of this measure using MRI on a phantom of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) with realistic shape. The aortic geometry is obtained from a series of cine-MR images and reco…

Multiple representations and mechanisms for visuomotor adaptation in young children

2012

International audience; In this study, we utilized transformed spatial mappings to perturb visuomotor integration in 5-yr-old children and adults. The participants were asked to perform pointing movements under five different conditions of visuomotor rotation (from 0° to 180°), which were designed to reveal explicit vs. implicit representations as well as the mechanisms underlying the visual-motor mapping. Several tests allowed us to separately evaluate sensorimotor (i.e., the dynamic dimension of movement) and cognitive (i.e., the explicit representations of target position and the strategies used by the participants) representations of visuo-proprioceptive distortion. Our results indicate…

Infection by a vertically-transmitted microsporidian parasite is associated with a female-biased sex ratio and survival advantage in the amphipod Gam…

2007

SUMMARYVertically transmitted parasites may have positive, neutral or negative effects on host fitness, and are also predicted to exhibit sex-specific virulence to increase the proportion or fitness of the transmitting sex. We investigated these predictions in a study on the survival and sex ratio of offspring of the amphipod Gammarus roeseli from females infected by the vertically transmitted microsporidia Nosema granulosis. We found, to our knowledge, the first evidence for a positive relationship between N. granulosis infection and host survival. Infection was associated with sex ratio distortion, not by male-killing, but probably by parasite-induced feminization of putative G. roeseli m…

Physical activity, aerobic fitness, and brain white matter : Their role for executive functions in adolescence

2020

Highlights • Aerobic fitness level, but not physical activity, is related to white matter properties in the brain. • The relation between physical activity and working memory is moderated by fractional anisotropy (FA) of the corpus callosum. • The FA of the corpus callosum and superior corona radiata moderates the relation between aerobic fitness and working memory.

Mappings of finite distortion from generalized manifolds

2014

We give a definition for mappings of finite distortion from a generalized manifold with controlled geometry to a Euclidean space. We prove that the basic properties of mappings of finite distortion are valid in this context. In particular, we show that under the same assumptions as in the Euclidean case, mappings of finite distortion are open and discrete.

Extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and first-principles study of SnWO4

2014

The local atomic structure in α- and β-SnWO 4 was studied bysynchrotron radiation W L 3 -edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy at 10 and 300 K.Strongly distorted WO 6 octahedra were found in α-SnWO 4 , whereas nearly regularWO 4 tetrahedra were observed in β-SnWO 4 , confirming previous results. Thestructural results obtained were supported by the first-principles calculations, suggesting that the second-order Jahn-Teller effect is responsible for octahedraldistortion.

Analysis of extended x-ray absorption fine structure data from copper tungstate by the reverse Monte Carlo method

2014

The static disorder and lattice dynamics of crystalline materials can be efficiently studied using reverse Monte Carlo simulations of extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectra (EXAFS). In this work we demonstrate the potentiality of this method on an example of copper tungstate CuWO4. The simultaneous analysis of the Cu K and W L3 edges EXAFS spectra allowed us to follow local structure distortion as a function of temperature.

White Etching Crack Root Cause Investigations

2014

White etching crack (WEC) failure is distinct to classical fatigue and driven by the composition of lubricants under special loading conditions; for example, slippage and electricity. The white etching area (WEA) within WEC contains carbon supersaturated ferrite (bcc-iron) and carbides, with a size of a few nanometers. This article presents investigations supporting the hypothesis that WEC processes start within a failure-free period by successive accumulation of a structural distortion. This can be measured by acoustic emission. Failure statistics show a steep ascent in the Weibull diagram (s values beyond 1) leading to the assumption that WEC processes start unsuspicious, as one would see…

Cu cluster shell structure at elevated temperatures

1991

Equilibrium structures of small (3--29)-atom Cu clusters are determined by simulated annealing, and finite-temperature ensembles are simulated by Monte Carlo techniques using the effective-medium theory for the energy calculation. Clusters with 8, 18, and 20 atoms are found to be particularly stable. The equilibrium geometrical structures are determined and found to be determined by a Jahn-Teller distortion, which is found to affect the geometry also at high temperatures. The ``magic'' clusters retain their large stability even at elevated temperatures.

Stochastic dynamics of linear elastic trusses in presence of structural uncertainties (virtual distortion approach)

2004

Structures involving uncertainties in material and/or in geometrical parameters are referred to as uncertain structures. Reliability analysis of such structures strongly depends on variation of parameters and probabilistic approach is often used to characterize structural uncertainties. In this paper dynamic analysis of linearly elastic system in presence of random parameter variations will be performed. In detail parameter fluctuations have been considered as inelastic, stress and parameter dependent superimposed strains. Analysis is then carried out via superposition principle accounting for response to external agencies and parameter dependent strains. Proposed method yields asymptotic s…
