Analgesics use in competitive triathletes: its relationship to doping and on predicting its usage

The two major objectives of this study were (i) to assess variables that predict the use of analgesics in competitive athletes and (ii) to test whether the use of analgesics is associated with the use of doping. A questionnaire primarily addressing the use of analgesics and doping was distributed among 2,997 triathletes. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to predict the use of analgesics. Moreover, the randomised response technique (RRT) was used to estimate the prevalence of doping in order to assess whether users of analgesics have a higher potential risk for doping than non-users. To verify whether combined measurements of GH-dependent parameters might be useful in detecting exogenous recombinant GH (rGH) administration in male athletes from different disciplines.Sixty-six athletes (control group) were sampled for the evaluation of resting IGF-I, N-terminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) and telopeptide type I collagen (ICTP). Nutritional supplements (NS) are defined as concentrated sources of nutrients and other substances that have a nutritional or physiological effect and that are used in high frequency among athletes. The study aimed to create a prediction profile for young elite athletes to identify those athletes who have a higher relative risk for using NS. Changes in neuromuscular performance and muscle fiber characteristics of elite power athletes self-administering androgenic and anabolic steroids

The influence of androgenic-anabolic steroid-induced changes in measures of body composition, muscle fiber characteristics and various aspects of the neuromuscular performance of the leg extensor muscles was investigated in five experimental and six control power athletes during the 24-week programmed strength training followed by the additional six week training without hormone drugs. Plasma volume expanders are prohibited agents used to reduce an artifi cial increase in hemato- logical values using diff erent illegal practices. Luminescence of silica glass containing aluminum oxide

Abstract Optical properties of silica glass with different doping of Al 2 O 3 up to 1.5 mol% were studied. Alumina stimulates creation of a luminescence centers with specific band at 3.3 eV. A new band at 8.2 eV appears in luminescence excitation spectra. There is transport of energy to other luminescence centers associated with an impurity (Ag, Ce) at this energy. Alumina stimulates creation of E′ centers under γ-irradiation beside trapped hole on AlO 4 tetrahedron as well as creation of a silicon related oxygen deficient center (SiODC) under cathodoexcitation. Optically detected magnetic resonance studied via the blue luminescence of Ti-doped

The UV-excited blue and green luminescence bands of Ti:sapphire are characterized by ODMR. These emission bands are attributed to two centres, which show very similar properties and are created as a result of a charge-transfer transition of an electron from to ions. In both centres, the d electron of and the hole of are strongly coupled and form triplet states. Doublet systems can be ruled out as sources of the blue-green luminescence. The angular dependence of the ODMR can be explained with an appropriate spin Hamiltonian assuming orthorhombic local symmetry.
