On the Fallacy of Forward Linkages: A Note in the Light of Recent Results

2009

Following on from de Mesnard’s (2009) radical criticism of the Ghosh supply-driven model, this paper draws the dramatic consequences for the widespread use of forward linkages in input-output analysis applied to regional science: the practice must be abandoned. The arguments are based on three points: (i) it is impossible simultaneously to choose the Leontief model for the backward effects and the Ghosh model for the forward effects; (ii) it is impossible simultaneously to consider a production function of complementary inputs (Leontief) and a production function of perfectly substitutable inputs (Ghosh); and most importantly (iii) price effects and output effects remain inextricably mixed …

Fashion-driven Textiles as A Crystal of A New Stream for Stakeholder Capitalism – Amazon's Endeavor

2020

Fashion reflects changes in socio-economic and cultural life which, in turn, changes fashion, and apparel boosts such change. Thus, in response to a shift in people’s preferences from economic functionality to supra-functionality beyond an economic value, the fashion industry has been gaining momentum worldwide. In the digital economy, the fashion industry is in the midst of global dynamic change stimulating volatility, velocity, variety and dynamism, which necessitate a digital solution. Digital business leader Amazon has succeeded in constructing an R&D-driven disruptive businesss model. This can be attributed to a virtuous cycle among user-driven innovation, advancement of the …

A multi-scale method for complex flows of non-Newtonian fluids

2021

We introduce a new heterogeneous multi-scale method for the simulation of flows of non-Newtonian fluids in general geometries and present its application to paradigmatic two-dimensional flows of polymeric fluids. Our method combines micro-scale data from non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) with macro-scale continuum equations to achieve a data-driven prediction of complex flows. At the continuum level, the method is model-free, since the Cauchy stress tensor is determined locally in space and time from NEMD data. The modelling effort is thus limited to the identification of suitable interaction potentials at the micro-scale. Compared to previous proposals, our approach takes into acco…

Turtles on the trash track: loggerhead turtles exposed to floating plastic in the Mediterranean Sea

2019

Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) spend most of their life in large marine areas occupying a variety of habitats where they are exposed to different types of threats. Among these, marine litter is known to pose a risk of entanglement or ingestion. Areas of risk exposure can be identified where the species overlap with litter accumulations, but gathering data on this highly mobile species and marine litter, especially in high sea areas, is challenging. Here we analysed five years of sea turtle and marine litter data collected by a network of research bodies along fixed trans-border transects in the Mediterranean Sea. Ferries were used as observation platforms to gather systematic data on …

Hydraulic vs. Electric: A Review of Actuation Systems in Offshore Drilling Equipment

2016

This article presents a survey on actuation systems encountered in offshore drilling applications. Specifically, it focuses on giving a comparison of hydraulic and electric drivetrains along with detailed explanations of their advantages and drawbacks. A significant number of industrial case studies is examined in addition to the collection of academic publications, in order to accurately describe the current market situation. Some key directions of research and development required to satisfy increasing demands on powertrains operating offshore are identified. The impact of the literature and application surveys is further strengthened by benchmarking two designs of a full-scale pipe handl…

Temperature Rise Estimation of Induction Motor Drives Based on Loadability Curves to Facilitate Design of Electric Powertrains

2017

Thermal protection limits are equally important as mechanical specifications when designing electric drivetrains. However, properties of motor drives like mass/length of copper winding or heat dissipation factor are not available in producers’ catalogs. The lack of this essential data prevents the effective selection of drivetrain components and makes it necessary to consult critical design decisions with equipment's suppliers. Therefore, in this paper, the popular loadability curves that are available in catalogs become a basis to formulate a method that allows to estimate temperature rise of motor drives. The current technique allows for evaluating a temperature rise of a motor drive for …

Survival of Floquet–Bloch States in the Presence of Scattering

2021

Floquet theory has spawned many exciting possibilities for electronic structure control with light, with enormous potential for future applications. The experimental demonstration in solids, however, remains largely unrealized. In particular, the influence of scattering on the formation of Floquet-Bloch states remains poorly understood. Here we combine time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with time-dependent density functional theory and a two-level model with relaxation to investigate the survival of Floquet-Bloch states in the presence of scattering. We find that Floquet-Bloch states will be destroyed if scattering-activated by electronic excitations-prevents the Bloch elec…

MHD free convection in a liquid-metal filled cubic enclosure. II. Internal heating

2002

The buoyancy-driven magnetohydrodynamic flow in a liquid-metal filled cubic enclosure was investigated by three-dimensional numerical simulation. The enclosure was differentially heated at two opposite vertical walls, all other walls being adiabatic, and a uniform magnetic field was applied orthogonal to the temperature gradient and to the gravity vector. The Rayleigh number was 105 and the Prandtl number was 0.0321 (characteristic of Pb–17Li at 573 K). The Hartmann number was made to vary between 102 and 103 and the electrical conductance of the walls between 0 and ∞. The continuity, momentum and enthalpy transport equations, in conjunction with a Poisson equation for the electric potentia…

One-dimensional Mixed MHD Convection

2006

The parallel, fully developed flow of an electrically conducting fluid between plane parallel walls under the simultaneous influence of a driving pressure head, buoyancy, and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) forces is studied. The fluid is assumed to be internally heated and the flow is modeled as one-dimensional and incompressible, while the Boussinesq approximation is adopted for the buoyancy terms. Analytical solutions are obtained for temperature, velocity and electrical potential under different electrical boundary conditions, forced to natural convection intensity ratios and values of the magnetic induction. Generalized working charts are presented which synthetically describe the system''s …
