Evapotranspiration from an Olive Orchard using Remote Sensing-Based Dual Crop Coefficient Approach
2013
A remote sensing-based approach to estimate actual evapotranspiration (ET) was tested in an area covered by olive trees and characterized by Mediterranean climate. The methodology is a modified version of the standard FAO-56 dual crop coefficient procedure, in which the crop potential transpiration, T p, is obtained by directly applying the Penman-Monteith (PM) equation with actual canopy characteristics (i.e., leaf area index, albedo and canopy height) derived from optical remote sensing data. Due to the minimum requirement of in-situ ancillary inputs, the methodology is suitable also for applications on large areas where the use of tabled crop coefficient values become problematic, due to…
Daily evapotranspiration assessment by means of residual surface energy balance modeling: A critical analysis under a wide range of water availability
2012
Summary An operational use of the actual evapotranspiration assessed by remote sensing approaches requires the integration of instantaneous fluxes to daily values. This is commonly achieved under the hypotheses of daytime self-preservation of evaporative fraction and negligible daily ground heat flux. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of these assumptions on estimate daily evapotranspiration over a full phenological cycle, including phases characterized by significant changes both in net radiation and vegetation cover. To assess the reliability of these hypotheses, the observations made by a flux tower, installed within a homogeneous field of cereal located in the valley part …
Applications of a remote sensing-based two-source energy balance algorithm for mapping surface fluxes without in situ air temperature observations
2012
Abstract The two-source energy balance (TSEB) model uses remotely sensed maps of land–surface temperature (LST) along with local air temperature estimates at a nominal blending height to model heat and water fluxes across a landscape, partitioned between dual sources of canopy and soil. For operational implementation of TSEB, however, it is often difficult to obtain representative air temperature data that are compatible with the LST retrievals, which may themselves have residual errors due to atmospheric and emissivity corrections. To address this issue, two different strategies in applying the TSEB model without requiring local air temperature data were tested over a typical Mediterranean…
P4571PFA-100, a test of platelet adhesion/aggregation, predicts cardiovascular events after an acute coronary syndrome and can help in the decision-m…
2019
Abstract Background The dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) duration is a matter of great interest among cardiologists. Because of the conflicting evidences and the necessity to balance the reduction in major cardiac events (MACE) occurrence and the risk of major bleedings after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS), there is a general consensus on prolonging DAPT on an individual basis. There is less consensus on which parameters are to be evaluated. Nowadays tests of platelet reactivity are not included in the decision-making. Few data are available on the prognostic value of aspirin response tests that are sensitive to other mediators of platelet adhesion and aggregation in vivo under flow condi…
Towards More Specificity and Effectivity in the Antileukemia Immune Response
2014
Experimental and clinical studies have shown that alloreactive T-cell responses derived from donor lymphocytes can effectively eliminate leukemia cells after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. However, there are still too many patients in whom this graft-versus-leukemia reactivity is insufficient to prevent leukemia relapse or who suffer from severe alloreactivity to nonmalignant host tissues also mediated by donor-derived T cells. Therefore, various conceptually different approaches have been developed at the level of donor T cells in order to improve the efficacy of leukemia-directed immunity while reducing the incidence of unwanted graft-versus-host disease. As outlined …
Adaptive dual control in one biomedical problem
2003
In this paper, the following biomedical problem is considered. People are subjected to a certain chemotherapeutic treatment. The optimal dosage is the maximal dose for which an individual patient will have toxicity level that does not cross the allowable limit. We discuss sequential procedures for searching the optimal dosage, which are based on the concept of dual control and the principle of optimality. According to the dual control theory, the control has two purposes that might be conflicting: one is to help learning about unknown parameters and/or the state of the system (estimation); the other is to achieve the control objective. Thus the resulting control sequence exhibits the closed…

2018
The present study aims to reveal the structure of positions in the field of addiction through the analysis of doctoral theses read in Spain. The source consulted for the selection of the theses was TESEO. Searching for the keywords drug abuse, alcoholism, drug effects and drug addiction treatment during the period 1976-2017 produced 728 theses. The most productive period is 2013-2017, with 208 (28.6%) doctoral theses. The overall rate of publication is increasing, but in the period 2003-2007 output decreased significantly to 5.2% of the total. The university contributing the most theses is the University of Valencia. The academic who has supervised the most theses is Alfonso Velasco Martin,…
Model interpretation from the additive elements of the PWRSS in GLMMs
2013
Generalized Linear Mixed models(GLMMs)have rapidly become a widely used tool for modelling clustered and longitudinal data with non-Normal responses. Although a large amount of work has been done in the literature on likelihood-based inference on GLMMs,little seems to have been done on the decomposition of the total variability associated to the different components of a mixed model. In this work we try to generalize the idea of likelihood additive elements Whittaker,1984), proposed in the context of GLMs,to the case of GLMMs by using the Penalized Weighted Residual Sum of Squares(PWRSS). The proposal is illustrated by means of areal application.
