Women Involved in the Financial Reporting Process and Financial Reporting Quality

We examine how the presence of women involved in the financial reporting process of public companies, and especially the interactions between them (i.e. the simultaneous presence of a woman CFO, women sitting on the audit committee, and women auditors), impacts financial reporting quality. For our sample of large French companies, we find that women do not affect financial reporting quality when interactions are not considered. Earnings Quality in Nonprofit Versus For-Profit Organizations: Evidence From the Microfinance Industry

This study uses data from the microfinance industry to analyze differences in earnings quality between for-profit and nonprofit organizations. The two sets of organizations differ with respect to both governance mechanisms and managerial incentives, and little research has been conducted to investigate how such differences affect the quality of financial reporting. Overall, we find little evidence of differences in earnings quality between our two samples in the aggregate. We do, however, observe significant differences among the types of nonprofit organizations; this finding suggests that the concept of a “nonprofit level of earnings quality” is ill defined.

Political Interference in Financial Reporting in the Financial Industry: Evidence from Spain

This paper provides a theoretical background, based on legal and political fields, which we adapt to explain political interference in accounting in the “public interest”, at a critical moment —the last financial crisis. This framework goes beyond the positive accounting theory, and in particular the political cost hypothesis, to explain politicians’ influence on financial reporting. Quels sont les effets de la pression exercée par les analystes financiers ? Le cas Carrefour

International audience; L'étude du remplacement du dirigeant emblématique de l'entreprise Carrefour, au début de l'année 2005, permet d'illustrer le rôle disciplinaire joué par les analystes financiers, ainsi que les effets pervers résultant de la pression exercée par ces derniers sur la qualité des états financiers. En effet, il apparaît que l'ancien dirigeant a géré les résultats à la hausse au cours des deux années précédentes, pour éviter d'annoncer une « mauvaise surprise » (un bénéfice de l'exercice inférieur aux bénéfices prévus par les analystes), alors que le nouveau dirigeant a eu tendance à « nettoyer » les comptes dès sa prise de fonction.

Abstract This study presents evidence on the effect of parenthood on labor market outcomes in Finland. We use population-based data drawn from administrative registers and an event study design centered around the birth of the first child using the specification proposed in Kleven et al. (2019b) . The study confirms that women encounter large short- and long-term child penalties in gross labor earnings and that penalties are associated with employment participation. Taxes and social security transfers considerably reduce the child penalty, which also varies by the number of children.

Does Commuting Reduce Wage Disparities?

ABSTRACT  This paper shows that in the Baltic countries, commuting reduces urban-rural wage and employment disparities and increases national output. To quantify the effect of commuting on wage differentials, two sets of earnings functions are estimated (based on Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian Labor Force Surveys) with location variables (capital city, rural, etc.) measured at the workplace and at the place of residence. The Role of Education in Self–Employment Success in Finland

This paper analyzes the effect of self–employed persons’ education on the success of their firms during the economic downturn and upturn of the 1990's. It is found that the business cycle affects the relative closure rates of firms run by self–employed with any level of education. Exit probability is lower for the highly educated during bust, but higher in boom. This is accounted for by two facts. Biomarkers and Long-Term Labour Market Outcomes: The Case of Creatine

I evaluate the impact of the UK Working Time Regulations 1998, which introduced mandatory paid holiday entitlement. The regulation gave (nearly) all workers the right to a minimum of 4 weeks of paid holiday per a year. With constant weekly pay this change amounts effectively to an increase in the real hourly wage of about 8.5% for someone going from 0 to 4 weeks paid holiday per year, which should lead to adjustments in employment. For employees I use complementary log-log regression to account for right-censoring of employment spells. I find no increase in the hazard to exit employment within a year after treatment.
