What do we know about growth of vessel elements of secondary xylem in woody plants?

2021

Despite extensive knowledge about vessel element growth and the determination of the axial course of vessels, these processes are still not fully understood. They are usually explained as resulting primarily from hormonal regulation in stems. This review focuses on an increasingly discussed aspect - mechanical conditions in the vascular cambium. Mechanical conditions in cambial tissue are important for the growth of vessel elements, as well as other cambial derivatives. In relation to the type of stress acting on cambial cells (compressive versus tensile stress) we: (i) discuss the shape of the enlarging vessel elements observed in anatomical sections; (ii) present hypotheses regarding the …

Augmented reality based middle and inner ear surgical procedures

2020

Otologic procedures involve manipulation of small, delicate and complex structures in the temporal bone anatomy which are in close proxmity of critical nerves and blood vessels. Augmented reality (AR) can highly benefit the otological domain by providing supplementary anatomical and navigational information unified on a single display. However, despite being composed of mainly rigid bony structures, the awareness and acceptance of possibilities of AR systems in otology is fairly low. This project aims at developing video-based AR solutions for middle and inner ear surgical procedures. We propose two applications of AR in this regard. In the first application, information about middle ear cle…

Eher Trauma als erfüllter Traum: Flüchtlinge aus der DDR in Julia Francks Roman „Lagerfeuer“ (2012) und in Christian Schwochows Film „Westen“ (2013)

2020

This paper aims to investigate the descriptions of traumatic life experiences of refugees from the DDR in literature and film. This essay examines the novel Lagerfeuer (2003) of Julia Franck and the film version Westen (2013) directed by Christian Schwochow. The two East Germans artists show the existential traumas of those people who had to leave their homes from different perspectives and in different artistic genres.

Fuzzified Tree Search in Real Domain Games

2011

Fuzzified game tree search algorithm is based on the idea that the exact game tree evaluation is not required to find the best move. Therefore, pruning techniques may be applied earlier resulting in faster search and greater performance. Applied to an abstract domain, it outperforms the existing ones such as Alpha-Beta, PVS, Negascout, NegaC*, SSS*/ Dual* and MTD(f). In this paper we present experimental results in real domain games, where the proposed algorithm demonstrated 10 percent performance increase over the existing algorithms.

What is a tree in the Mediterranean Basin hotspot? A critical analysis

2019

Background: Tree species represent 20% of the vascular plant species worldwide and they play a crucial role in the global functioning of the biosphere. The Mediterranean Basin is one of the 36 world biodiversity hotspots, and it is estimated that forests covered 82% of the landscape before the first human impacts, thousands of years ago. However, the spatial distribution of the Mediterranean biodiversity is still imperfectly known, and a focus on tree species constitutes a key issue for understanding forest functioning and develop conservation strategies. Methods: We provide the first comprehensive checklist of all native tree taxa (species and subspecies) present in the Mediterranean-Europ…

Right-arm rotation distance between binary trees

2003

We consider a transformation on binary trees, named right-arm rotation, which is a special instance of the well-known rotation transformation. Only rotations at nodes of the right arm of the trees are allowed. Using ordinal tools, we give an efficient algorithm for computing the right-arm rotation distance between two binary trees, i.e., the minimum number of rightarm rotations necessary to transform one tree into the other.

Synthesis and Characterisation of Chiral Triazole-Based Halogen-Bond Donors: Halogen Bonds in the Solid State and in Solution

2017

A general platform for the synthesis of various chiral halogen-bond (XB) donors based on the triazole core and the characterisation of factors that influence the strength of the halogen bond in the solid state and in solution are reported. The characterisation of XB donors in the solid state by X-ray crystallography and in solution by 1H NMR titration can be used to aid the design of new XB donors. We describe the first example of a XB between iodotriazoles and thioureas in solution. In addition, the enantiodiscrimination of acceptors in solution through halogen-bond participation is described.

18F-FDG PET for breast cancer : combined analysis of tumour perfusion and metabolism for tumour characterisation and neoadjuvant chemotherapy respons…

2020

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is a common treatment in patients with locally advanced or large breast cancer at diagnosis. A pathological complete response (pCR) at the end of NAC is recognized as a good surrogate marker of relapse-free survival. An early identification of the pathological response has then become a key parameter to monitor new therapeutic strategies. Studies, focusing on predictive biomarkers identification, have shown that early changes in tumour metabolism, assessed by Positron Emission Tomography (PET) using 2-desoxy-2-18F-fluoro-D-glucose (18F-FDG), allow the early assessment of the pathological response at the end of treatment. However, given the diversity of breast …

Purification and spectroscopic studies on catechol oxidases from Lycopus europaeus and Populus nigra: evidence for a dinuclear copper center of type …

1999

We purified two catechol oxidases from Lycopus europaeus and Populus nigra which only catalyze the oxidation of catechols to quinones without hydroxylating tyrosine. The molecular mass of the Lycopus enzyme was determined to 39,800 Da and the mass of the Populus enzyme was determined to 56,050 Da. Both catechol oxidases are inhibited by thiourea, N-phenylthiourea, dithiocarbamate, and cyanide, but show different pH behavior using catechol as substrate. Atomic absorption spectrosopic analysis found 1.5 copper atoms per protein molecule. Using EPR spectroscopy we determined 1.8 Cu per molecule catechol oxidase. Furthermore, EPR spectroscopy demonstrated that catechol oxidase is a copper enzym…
