Early development of taste and flavor preferences and consequences on eating behavior

2018

The first 1000 days of life constitute an important period for development of health and eating behavior, in particular because the mode of feeding drastically evolves, which involves that the child has to learn “how” to eat, but also “what” to eat, “how” much food to eat. After birth, when foods are orally exposed, infants discover the intrinsic properties of foods, with a variety of tastes, flavors, textures, as well as energy densities. Here we focus on deciphering the involvement of taste and olfaction in the early establishment of eating behavior. In the OPALINE French birth cohort (Observatory of Food Preferences in Infants and Children), taste and flavor preferences were studied in c…

How does taste influence food preferences and food intake in early childhood?

2012

Humans are born with very few flavor preference. The most consistent observations concern taste: newborns exhibit an early attraction for the sweet taste, in opposition to the avoidance of the bitter taste. Odor preferences are less obvious and are generally related to prenatal learning and/or have biological relevance (Schaal, 2006). The objectives of this presentation will be to describe the early taste preference, how they evolve in early infancy (Schwartz, Issanchou, & Nicklaus, 2009), and how the taste of the foods or the individual attraction toward tastes might influence food preference in infancy (Schwartz, Chabanet, Lange, Issanchou, & Nicklaus, 2011), as well as food intake in ear…

2018

Everyone who acquires a new language at school or elsewhere has the right to learn good pronunciation. As phonetic errors are foreseeable, this paper begins by delineating deviations in (co)articulation and prosody which are typical of Italian learners of German, with the aim of examining how far these specific, predictable phonetic problems are treated in German textbooks used in Italy. The study shows that even modern textbooks do not consider phonetics in a satisfactory way. Today’s learning world 3.0 – not only interactive, but also shaped for the individual learner – is characterized by a growing number of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and special Computer Assisted Pronunc…

Emotions in Technology Design

2020

Understanding emotions is becoming ever more valuable in design, both in terms of what people prefer as well as in relation to how they behave in relation to it. Approaches to conceptualising emotions in technology design, how emotions can be operationalised and how they can be measured are paramount to ascertaining the core principles of design.Emotions in Technology Design: From Experience to Ethics provides a multi-dimensional approach to studying, designing and comprehending emotions in design. It presents emotions as understood through basic human-technology research, applied design practice, culture and aesthetics, ethical approaches to emotional design, and ethics as a cultural frame…

ICT competences in university students in the field of education and its relationship with learning strategies

2016

The influence of institutional measures and technological proficiency on university teaching through digital platforms

2012

The hyperspectral and smartphone technology in CBRNE countermeasures and defence

2016

Caused by industrial and military use as well as other sources of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosive (CBRNE) materials, the global threat of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) remains in spite of such weapons being internationally prohibited. With these materials, industrial and transportation accidents are likely in all countries and can also be triggered by natural disasters, such as in Fukushima in 2011. In addition, governments cannot fully control the manufacturing and usage of WMDs, as extreme terrorists have access to as well as the knowledge and motivation to use such materials. Due to multiple large-scale risks, the countering of CBRNE threats requ…

Gudro ēku vadības sistēmu funkcionālo iespēju pilnveidošana energoefektivitātes un termiskā komforta paaugstināšanai

2021
