Self-dressing in classical and quantum electrodynamics
2003
A short review is presented of the theory of dressed states in nonrelativistic QED, encompassing fully and partially dressed states in atomic physics. This leads to the concept of the reconstruction of the cloud of virtual photons and of self-dressing. Finally some recent results on the classical counterpart of self-dressing are discussed and a comparison is made with the QED case. Attention is drawn to open problems and future lines of research are briefly outlined.
Supersolid Behavior of Light
2008
We will show how light can form stationary structures on dielectric periodic media such that their dynamics present simultaneous features of spatial long range order and superfluidity. This phenomenon is normally referred to as supersolidity.
Shear Modulus of an Irreversible Diblock Copolymer Network from Self-Consistent Field Theory
2019
Using self-consistent field theory, we investigate the stretching-induced microphase separation in an irreversibly cross-linked polymer network composed of diblock copolymer chains and estimate its...
Relation of Interdiffusion and Self-Diffusion in Polymer Mixtures
1986
From different assumptions one obtains linear relationships either between the interdiffusion coefficient and the self-diffusion coefficients or between the inverse interdiffusion coefficient and the inverse self-diffusion coefficients. The nature of these assumptions and possible experiments for discriminating between them are discussed.
Functional consequences of prey acclimation to ocean acidification for the prey and its predator
2016
Ocean acidification is the suite of chemical changes to the carbonate system of seawater as a consequence of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Despite a growing body of evidences demonstrating the negative effects of ocean acidification on marine species, the consequences at the ecosystem level are still unclear. One factor limiting our ability to upscale from species to ecosystem is the poor mechanistic understanding of the functional consequences of the observed effects on organisms. This is particularly true in the context of species interactions. The aim of this work was to investigate the functional consequence of the exposure of a prey (the mussel Brachidontes pharaonis) t…
Self-assembly in surfactant-based liquid mixtures: Octanoic acid/Bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine systems
2012
Abstract The physico-chemical properties of Bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine (BEEA) plus octanoic acid (OA) mixtures have been investigated by IR, SAXS, WAXS, viscosimetry, and AC complex impedance spectroscopy in the whole composition range. Mainly driven by proton transfer from the acidic OA to the basic BEEA, the formation of stoichiometrically well-defined adducts takes place in the mixtures. This causes the slowing down of molecular dynamics and the increase in charge carrier number density. Interestingly, while the pure components possess no significant conductivity (about 10−12 S cm−1 at 25 °C), their mixtures show a composition-dependent enhanced conductivity (up to about 10−5 S cm−1), i.e., …
Electrically conductive hydrogel composites made of polyaniline nanoparticles and poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)
2006
Abstract A novel electrically conductive composite material, consisting of polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles dispersed in a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) hydrogel, was prepared ‘in situ’ by water dispersion polymerisation (DP) of aniline using PVP as steric stabiliser, followed by γ-irradiation induced crosslinking of the PVP component. Conversion yield of aniline into PANI particles was determined via HPLC and gas chromatography, while structural confirmation of the synthesised polymer was sought by FTIR. Morphology and dimensions of PANI particles into the coloured, optically transparent hydrogel was determined by electronic microscopy; moreover, swelling behaviour of composite hydrogels in …
Thin Films by Multilayer Build-Up of Electron Transport Materials
2003
We present the synthesis and the electrochemical characterization of polymeric electron transport materials, synthesized by polycondensation of substituted triazines and α,ω-dihaloalkanes. They can be reversibly reduced with the least negative potential at −0.39 V, which is below the reduction potential of oxygen. In addition, the formation of polyelectrolyte multilayers is possible by the electrostatic self-assembly method. This multilayer formation takes place in a very defined way up to thirty double layers. An example of one of the polymeric triazine electron transport materials synthesized and a schematic diagram of a self-assembled multilayer film.
Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid/bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine mixtures as solvent media for lithium-ions: A dynamical study
2016
Abstract The self-diffusion coefficient, the spin-lattice relaxation times and ionic conductivity of lithium ions in liquid mixtures composed of bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine (BEEA) and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) have been thoroughly investigated as a function of composition and temperature by NMR spectroscopy and conductometry. While the temperature and composition dependence of diffusion coefficients of lithium ions follow the same trend observed for those of the surfactant molecules, the spin-lattice relaxation times of lithium ions and 1 H are remarkably different. The observed behavior has been interpreted in terms of lithium ions diffusion occurring through its association with…
Fourfold tetraurea calix[4]arenes--potential cores for the formation of self-assembled dendrimers.
2005
Wide rim tetraurea calix[4]arenes monofunctionalized at the narrow rim by COOH or NH2 have been synthesized in five steps from t-butylcalix[4]arene tripropylether. Their covalent linkage via the narrow rim to a central calix[4]arene fixed in the 1,3-alternate conformation led to pentacalix[4]arenes 9 bearing four tetraurea derivatives in the cone conformation in a flexible tetrahedral arrangement. Their self-assembly via the formation of hydrogen bonded dimeric capsules has been studied under different conditions. A fourfold heterodimerisation of tetrakis-tetraurea derivatives of type 9 with tetratosylurea 10 has been confirmed by 1H NMR-spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering.
