Understanding teachers’ mental models of collaboration to enhance the learning community

2022

This study examined representations of Finnish basic education teachers’ mental models of collaboration to reveal the background features that enable or hinder changes in a school community and teacher collaboration. In this case study, we explored 41 teachers’ mental models of collaboration in a one-school community to identify and understand the features that enhance or challenge collaboration. The findings raise the question of how collaboration can support a school’s transition to a unified comprehensive school, when teachers are accustomed to working alone with a strong sense of autonomy and diverse mental models of collaboration. The findings revealed that collaboration is mainly limi…

Why know myself? Flexible behaviour and the need for self-modelling: Poster

2021

In this paper I argue that some forms of the capacity for behavioural flexibility entail a specific kind of representation, a self-model. This means that systems with that capacity, among them human beings, must have self-models. In its basic form, the capacity for behavioural flexibility allows a system to respond to the same sensory stimulus differentially, depending on the values of parameters with which it represents the world. On seeing a street, I might cycle straight ahead or take a sharp turn left – depending on whether I represent it to blocked off just around the corner. More advanced forms expand on this. Self-models are a form of self-representation in which states are represent…

L2 or L3? Foreign Language Enjoyment and Proficiency

2017

Enjoyment is among the achievement emotions encountered in school and university settings. While often identified with a sense of belonging not necessarily connected with learning (Lumby, 2011), foreign language enjoyment (FLE) in SLA has been found to correlate with teachers’ professional and affective skills, and the existence of a supportive peer group. The risk involved with meeting the challenges of the SLA process induces both private and social feelings of FLE (Dewaele & MacIntyre, 2016). This study hypothesizes that a good command of language may be a source of elevated levels of enjoyment, because greater language proficiency is connected with greater control perception, especially…

Positive Predictive Value of Extraversion in Diagnosing L2WTC

2021

Willingness to communicate in a foreign/second language (L2 WTC) is now considered an influential variable underlying the second and foreign language learning processes. It is also perceived in terms of a fundamental goal of second language education, because its higher levels result in a greater desire to practise oral communication, bringing about successful language learning. According to the pyramid model of L2 WTC, it is rooted in personality which produces both distal and enduring influences on a student’s verbal behaviour. It can thus be expected that extraversion, a personality dimension identified with energy and enthusiasm and characterised by sensitivity to reward and sociability…

Trait Self-Control, Social Cognition Constructs, and Intentions: Correlational Evidence for Mediation and Moderation Effects in Diverse Health Behavi…

2019

Background: We examined effects of trait self‐control, constructs from social cognition theories, and intentions on health behaviours. Trait self‐control was expected to predict health behaviour indirectly through theory constructs and intentions. Trait self‐control was also predicted to moderate the intention–behaviour relationship. Methods: Proposed effects were tested in six datasets for ten health‐related behaviours from studies adopting prospective designs. Participants (N = 3,249) completed measures of constructs from social cognition theories and self‐control at an initial time point and self‐reported their behaviour at follow‐up. Results: Results revealed indirect effects of self‐co…

Self-regulatory Efficacy and Foreign Language Attainment

2016

The foreign language learning process is lengthy and full of obstacles, while the most significant learning effects are quite delayed in time, and difficult to notice on a day-to-day basis. For this reason perseverance in self-controlling efforts may be of crucial importance to language success. It allows for a steady linguistic and cultural development of the student, allowing him to enjoy diverse, even contradictory opinions, leading to ultimate language success. The results of the research carried out with Polish secondary grammar school students (N = 621) demonstrate that only in reference to self-assessment of FL skills students with high levels of self-regulated efficacy significantly…
