Pre-3000 Ma thermal history of the Archean Kaap Valley puton, South Africa

1992

The Kaap Valley pluton is one of several early Archean (3200-3500 Ma) tonalitetrondhjemite plutons that surround the Barberton Greenstone belt, southern Africa. Precise dating using single-grain 207 Pb/ 206 Pb evaporation of zircon and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar laser step-heating of hornblende and biotite indicates that, in its interior, the Kaap Valley pluton preserves a memory of its initial intrusion and cooling, which spanned a time from 3225 to 3142 Ma. The pluton also records the effect of a low-temperature thermal event at its margin as seen by a 40 Ar/ 39 Ar biotite age of 3035 Ma, which is perhaps related to hydrothermal activity and gold mineralization in the adjacent Barberton Greenstone belt…

A Note on the Shear Influence on Belt Drive Mechanics

2007

Abstract Belt drives work often with short center distances and very different wrap arcs so that high adherence characteristics are required at the belt-pulley contact. In addition, the belt flexural stiffness reduces the contact width, but this decrease may be compensated in part by the belt softening due to the shear compliance.

Association between Serum Heat Shock Proteins and Gamma-Delta T Cells—An Outdated Clue or a New Direction in Searching for an Anticancer Strategy? A …

2021

HSPs demonstrate a strong association with gamma-delta (γδ) T cells. Most of the studies regarding interactions between the parameters were conducted in the 1990s. Despite promising results, the concept of targeting γδ T cells by HSPs seems to be a forgotten direction due to potent non-peptidic phosphoantigens rather than HSPs have been found to be the essential stimulatory components for human γδ cells. Currently, with greater knowledge of lymphocyte diversity, and more accurate diagnostic methods, we decided to study the correlation once again in the neoplastic condition. Twenty-one children with newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) were enrolled on the study. Serum HSP90 c…

Effect of sodium loading (3% NaCl) on arachidonic acid biosynthesis in rat liver microsomes

1992

Sodium loading increases arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism by way of the prostaglandins(PGs) from series 2. Its effect on AA biosynthesis remains unknown. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of sodium loading on the fatty acid composition of liver and liver microsomes, and the liver microsomal delta-6 and delta-5 desaturations of linoleic acid (LA) into AA. We found a decrease of LA and dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) levels in liver total lipids of Wistar rats receiving hypernatriuretic drinking water (NaCl 3%) for 60 days. At the same time AA increased. DGLA decreased and AA increased in liver microsomal total lipids. 1(14) C-LA delta-6 desaturase and 2(14)…

Current L2 self-concept of Finnish comprehensive school students : The role of grades, parents, peers, and society

2021

L2 (second/foreign language) motivation research in Finland has been scarce. Furthermore, international motivational research has focused more on ideal and ought-to selves, leaving the current L2 self-concept in the background. In the present study, we attempted to address this gap, exploring what shapes L1 (mother tongue) Finnish students' understanding of themselves as users and learners of L2s. Using structural equation modelling, we studied the relationships between students' (n = 1206) current L2 self-concept and parental encouragement, peer pressure, societal expectations, and grades. We further studied which of these factors are the best predictors of students' current L2 self-concep…

A VR-Enhanced Rollover Car Simulator and Edutainment Application for Increasing Seat Belt Use Awareness

2021

Most countries have active road safety policies that seek the objective of reducing deaths in traffic accidents. One of the main factors in this regard is the awareness of the safety measures, one of the most important being the correct usage of the seat belt, a device that is known to save thousands of lives every year. The presented work shows a VR-enhanced edutainment application designed to increase awareness on the use of seat belts. For this goal, a motorized rollover system was developed that, synchronized with a VR application (shown in a head-mounted display for each user inside a real car), rolls over this car with up to four passengers inside. This way, users feel the sensations …

The relationship between animal cruelty in children and adolescent and interpersonal violence: A systematic review

2019

Abstract The following study is a systematic review of the relationship between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence. The systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines and combined with the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, enabled us to locate 32 studies published between 1995 and July 2017. Overall, the results show that episodes of animal cruelty during childhood and adolescence tend to co-occur alongside other forms of violent and antisocial behaviors. Cruelty to animals was associated with bullying, behavioral problems, experiences of abuse (emotional, physical and sexual), and juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, recurrent animal cruelty during childhood a…

Svensklärares uppfattningar om handledning i gymnasiet

2018

Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena oli selvittää, millaisia käsityksiä lukion ruotsin kielen opettajilla on ohjauksesta. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin fenomenografista menetelmää, joka keskittyy käsitysten tutkimiseen aineistolähtöisesti. Aineisto kerättiin haastattelemalla kahdeksaa opettajaa neljästä eri lukiosta ja se analysoitiin fenomenografisen analyysimallin mukaisesti keskittyen aineistosta nousevien käsitysten moninaisuuteen haastateltavien yksilöllisten erojen ja yhtäläisyyksien sijasta. Käsityksistä muodostettiin kaksitasoinen kategoriajärjestelmä, joka koostuu viidestä kuvauskategoriasta; 1) Ohjauksen tarkoitus, 2) Edellytykset hyvälle ohjaukselle, 3) Ohjausvastuun jakautuminen lukiossa, 4) …

Μετάβασις εἰς ἄλλο γένος: scelte biotiche e interdetti negli Amores

2018

The Amores’ collection is rich in declarations of literary intents, among which the introductory poem stands out: in this elegy the poet announces a metabasis eis allo genos, by blending echos from Bio frr. 3 e 10 G. with echoes from Prop. 2.13a.1-4, in order to legitimise the transition from the original epic inspiration to the elegiac one. The motif occurs again in 2.1 and 18: in the first case Ovid justifies, for the second time, this evolution, in the latter he informs the reader of his comeback to the erotic elegy, after a break in the space of the tragedy and of the didascalic and/or epistolary poetry with erotic content (Ars, Heroides). Later, in Am. 3.1 the famous dispute between El…
