Invasive Observation by Atomic Force Microscope of a Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayer of Gramicidin

2002

The properties of gramicidin, a linear antibiotic polypeptide of 15 amino acids, have been studied at the air-water interface. Analysis of the pressure-area isotherm is not able to conclude about the conformational behavior of gramicidin in the monolayer. Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of gramicidin layers onto a mica substrate has been developed for atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations. At high pressure of deposition, the gramicidin monolayer is composed of dimers perpendicular to the surface. The possibility of removing the half upper part of this dimer monolayer with the AFM tip is more in favor of a structure of single-stranded helical dimers.

Atomic layer deposition of polyimide thin films

2007

The atomic layer deposition (ALD) of different polyimide thin films has been studied. We have demonstrated self-limiting ALD deposition of PMDA–DAH, PMDA–EDA, PMDA–ODA and PMDA–PDA thin films at 160 °C. The maximum deposition rate of 5.8 A cycle−1 was obtained for the PMDA–DAH process. Although the deposition rate was high at 160 °C, a sudden decrease was observed when the temperature was increased. Regardless of the process studied, no film growth was obtained at 200 °C or above. Deposited polyimide films were analysed by FTIR, AFM and TOF-ERDA. According to the FTIR measurements, imide bonds were formed already in as-deposited films indicating polyimide formation without any additional th…

Thin Film Characterisation Using MeV Ion Beams

2009

This chapter focuses on the characterisation of very thin films having thicknesses from a few nanometres to tens of nanometres. The driving force for the ion beam analysis community has mostly been the rapid development of microelectronics — all the elements in new thin SiO2 replacing dielectrics, diffusion barriers, and silicide contacts need to be analysed with a depth resolution even better than a nanometre. This together with new film deposition techniques like atomic layer deposition (ALD) [1] have given a push to the ion beam analysis community to develop new and better techniques using energetic (>0.5 MeV) ion beams.

A theoretical investigation on the Cd doping of Cu-depleted CuInSe<inf>2</inf> materials

2011

Because of their outstanding characteristics and affordable price, polycrystalline thin film solar cells based on CuIn 1−x Ga x Se 2 (CIGS) absorber layer have emerged to be one of the most promising materials for photovoltaic applications [1–2]. To further enhance the efficiency of these solar cells much effort is spent on the in-depth investigation of the production methods. However, the effect of structural defects and dopants upon the macroscopic properties and morphology of epitaxially grown CIGS films is not yet fully understood [3]. More importantly, it is well established that the best cells can be prepared by growing the CIGS absorber layer under Cu-poor conditions [4]. Thus, it is…

Cannabinoid CB1 receptor activation modulates spontaneous contractile activity in mouse ileal longitudinal muscle.

2007

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether cannabinoid receptor agonists influence spontaneous contractile activity of longitudinal muscle in mouse ileum in vitro. Isolated segments of mouse ileum displayed spontaneous contractions with an amplitude and frequency of about 300 mg and 30 cpm, respectively. The endocannabinoid anandamide (1-100 microM), the selective cannabinoid CB(1) receptor agonist, ACEA (0.1 microM-10 microM), but not the selective cannabinoid CB(2) receptor agonist, JWH 133 (0.1 microM-10 microM), reduced in a concentration-dependent manner the spontaneous mechanical activity. The inhibitory effect consisted in a decrease of the mean amplitude of longitudinal…

l -Prolinoyl chiral picket iron porphyrins evaluated for the enantioselective epoxidation of alkenes

2003

International audience; Four atropisomers of an L-prolinoyl picket porphyrin were synthesised from tetra-o-aminophenyl porphyrin (TAPP) and were evaluated as alkene epoxidation catalysts after incorporation of iron in the porphyrin core. In the case of the aaaa atropisomer bearing the four amino groups on the same side, a bulky base was employed in order to suppress the eventual reaction on the non-functionalised side of the porphyrin. The resulting enantioselectivities were compared with either other chiral motifs or with the corresponding strapped porphyrins. The enantioselectivities obtained with picket porphyrins are as high as those for strapped porphryins, and in some cases, even highe…

Disclosing Conflict of Interest - Do Experience and Reputation Matter?

2009

In a controlled laboratory experiment, we investigate the effects of disclosing conflicts of interest on the reporting of information providers. First, we replicate the findings of Cain, Loewenstein, and Moore (2005) that such disclosure makes misreporting more likely as it removes moral concerns. Second, we observe that these effects diminish given experience and find, to the opposite, that disclosure reduces bias in auditors' reporting as predicted by economic theory. Third, we identify disclosure of conflicts of interest as a potential impediment to reputation formation.

Understanding the determinants of the magnitude of entity-level risk and account-level risk key audit matters: The case of the United Kingdom

2019

Abstract This study was conducted to analyse the influence of auditor and client characteristics on the magnitude and type of key audit matters (KAM) disclosed in the audit reports of the FTSE 100 companies in the UK during the period 2013–2016. A recently introduced standard requires auditors to reveal the main risks faced by the client and to describe how these are addressed in the audit. Our results show that Deloitte, EY and KPMG tend to report fewer entity-level-risk KAM (ELRKAM) than PwC, while KPMG and BDO report fewer account-level-risk KAM (ALRKAM) than PwC. In general, auditors of companies that pay higher audit services fees present more ELRKAM and fewer ALRKAM. Our findings also…
