This article presents the results of material studies focused on identifying and comparing the contents of the pigment palettes of two notable Finnish painters, Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) and Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931). The research methods used comprise energydispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) and polarised light microscopy (PLM). In addition, certain pigments have been identified in colour areas of the works using specular reflection FT-infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and Raman spectrometry. Sinhronajā tulkošanā par izplatītu kļūdu, kas mērķvalodu piesārņo ar nevēlamiem avotvalodas elementiem, tiek uzskatīta lingvistiskā interference. Pētījuma mērķis ir noteikt leksiskās interferences ietekmi uz vēstījuma precizitāti un skaidrību sinhronajos tulkojumos no angļu valodas uz latviešu valodu un no latviešu valodas uz angļu valodu. Izmantojot gan satura analīzi, gan sastatāmo analīzi, darbā tiek pētīts leksiskās interferences apjoms, veidi un ietekme. Rezultāti atklāj, ka leksiskā interference ir biežāk novērojama un daudzveidīgāka mutiskajos tulkojumos uz dzimto valodu, savukārt tulkojumos uz svešvalodu tā ievērojami vairāk maina oriģinālo vēstījumu. Essays on wages, promotions and performance evaluations

This dissertation comprises four empirical research articles that use personnel data from a large university and worker-level panel data from Finland to examine the determinants of wages, promotions and employee performance evaluations. The first article employs personnel data to examine the importance of worker output and job seniority as predictors of employee performance evaluations and promotions. The results suggest that better-performing employees – with output measured both in absolute terms and relative to peers – were more likely to be assigned higher performance grades and had a higher probability of being promoted to more complex jobs than their peers with similar characteristics…

Signs in public space reflect ‘normalcy’ in a community. The authors ask what restricting signs tell us about a society? In order to explore the system and variation in the ways dog signs manifest different norms and control, they compare two different data sets: dog signs in a Northern European town, Jyväskylä in Finland, and two Eastern European villages in Romania. They apply a qualitative methodology based on visual communication, geosemiotics and linguistic landscape studies. Estimaciones de temperatura de la superficie terrestre, en días parciales a completamente despejados, fueron realizadas a partir de los datos proporcionados por el sensor Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), a bordo de la serie de satélites de la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) por aplicación de un algoritmo basado en el método de Split-Window.
