The aim of this paper is to analyze the degree of compliance on the correct academic writing prefixed words (contained in the new spelling) that pe…

The Polysemy of the verbs «pegar», «apegar» and «empegar» in Catalan : a synchronic manifestation of semantic change

2015

In this paper we study the polysemy that the verbs pegar ('hit/stick'), apegar ('stick') and empegar ('stick') possess today in the Catalan language. First of all, we perform a thorough description of the meanings that each of these verbs have acquired not only in the standard but also in the colloquial language. Each of the meanings has been differentiated from the others by analysing the most prominent dictionaries currently available and a corpus of written texts. Additionally, a number of surveys on the spoken language have also been taken into account. Our research has shown that in the different Catalan dialects they do not always have the same meanings or the same verb forms. To be a…

2016

This article studies the polysemy of the verb pegar from a diachronic perspective. The study is based on research conducted on an extensive corpus of texts written between the 13th and 21st centuries, as well as on the information provided by different historical dictionaries. The author identifies the different meanings acquired by the verb pegar by documenting and dating them. The analysis shows that the meanings that are most directly related with the etymological sense of sticking gradually become obsolete. In contrast, new meanings connected with them are generated, one of the most important being the sense of 'to touch with a certain amount of violence or intensity, to hit'. The inter…

Production of methyl mercury in the gut of the Australian termite Mastotermes darwiniensis

2008

Animals are often exposed to or can ingest heavy metals along with their food. Therefore, we tested whether the hindgut microbiota of Mastotermes darwiniensis possesses the capability to form methyl mercury. The termite M. darwiniensis (Isoptera) was fed with saw dust containing different concentrations of inorganic mercury. Methyl mercury was determined by purge-and-trap capillary gas chromatography-atom fluorescence spectrometry (CGC-AFS) using ethyl mercury chloride as the internal standard. Total mercury concentrations were determined in the termite tissue by inductive coupled plasma-isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ICP-IDMS) after microwave-assisted digestion. The obtained results s…

Co-expression of CD133+/CD44+in human colon cancer and liver metastasis

2013

Although relatively good therapeutic results are achieved in non-advanced cancer, the prognosis of the advanced colon cancer still remains poor, dependent on local or distant recurrence of the disease. One of the factors responsible for recurrence is supposed to be cancer stem cells (CSCs) or tumor-initiating cells, which are a population of cancer cells with ability to perpetuate themselves through self-renewal and to generate differentiated cells, thought to be responsible for tumor recurrence. This study globally approach the possible role of tissue-derived stem cells in the initiation of colon cancer and its metastatic process in the liver. Fresh surgical specimens from colon cancer, no…

Ultrastructure and formation of the physogastric termite queen cuticle

1982

0040-8166 (Print) Journal Article; The physogastric termite queen is the most striking example in insects of growth in size without cuticular moulting. This phenomenon has been studied with electron microscopy and histochemical tests in two species of higher termites, Cubitermes fungifaber and Macrotermes bellicosus. The abdominal hypertrophy (physogastry) is allowed by growth of the arthrodial membranes of the swarming imago. The growth is slow (over several years) but important: the cuticular dry weight is multiplied by 20 in C. fungifaber, by 100-150 in M. bellicosus. The termite queen cuticle arises from the transformation of the cuticle of the swarming imago or imaginal cuticle (unfold…

A new species of Charinus Simon, 1892 (Amblypygi, Charinidae) from termite nests in French Guiana

2015

The genus Charinus is represented by 51 species, distributed in all tropical regions. Their small size allows them to use a wide range of micro-habitats, from caves, litter to insect nests. The new species C. sillami sp. nov. was found into termite nests of three different species: Neocapritermes taracua, Spinitermes sp. and Embiratermes neotenicus. Only Paracharon caecus (Paleoamblypygi: Paracharontidae) was previously known to be associated with Isoptera. Eleven species of Charinus were previously known from Northern South America. Charinus sillami sp. nov. is the second species of the genus occurring in French Guiana. An updated key of Northern South-American species is provided.

Departing from some texts by Jesús Moncada, Quim Mon…
