Quantitative assessment of microvascular structure is relevant to the investigations of ischemic injury, reparative angiogenesis and tumor revascularization. In light microscopy applications, thick tissue specimens are necessary to characterize microvascular networks; however, thick tissue leads to image distortions due to out-of-focus light. Structured illumination confocal microscopy is an optical sectioning technique that improves contrast and resolution by using a grid pattern to identify the plane-of-focus within the specimen. The transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture in Europe is associated with demographic changes that may have shifted the human gene pool of the region as a result of an influx of Neolithic farmers from the Near East. However, the genetic composition of populations after the earliest Neolithic, when a diverse mosaic of societies that had been fully engaged in agriculture for some time appeared in central Europe, is poorly known. Ruthenium red staining of polyanion containing structures in sections from epoxy-resin embedded tissues

Summary Staining by ruthenium red (0.5 mg/ml in borate buffer at pH = 9.2) has been used for light and electron microscopic visualization of polyanion containing structures in sections from glutaraldehyde-fixed, epoxy-embedded tissues. This staining technique can be applied in a simple and rapid way, showing the reactive cell components with suitable resolution and contrast. Preliminary spectrophotometric studies show the correspondence in absorption characteristics of the dye which is bound to polyanions in situ or in vitro .

Assessment of anterior segment measurements using a high-resolution imaging device

To assess the repeatability of several anterior segment parameters obtained with swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).We measured 5-times consequently several parameters in 69 eyes using the ANTERION SS-OCT. White-to-white (WTW), angle-to-angle (ATA), spur-to-spur (STS), and lens vault distances were measured in the horizontal- and vertical-meridian. Dysfunction of attention switching networks in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Objective To localise and characterise changes in cognitive networks in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) using source analysis of mismatch negativity (MMN) waveforms. Rationale The MMN waveform has an increased average delay in ALS. MMN has been attributed to change detection and involuntary attention switching. This therefore indicates pathological impairment of the neural network components which generate these functions. Tracing the genetic origin of Europe’s first farmers reveals insights into their social organization

Farming was established in Central Europe by the Linearbandkeramik culture (LBK), a well-investigated archaeological horizon, which emerged in the Carpathian Basin, in today's Hungary. However, the genetic background of the LBK genesis has not been revealed yet. Here we present 9 Y chromosomal and 84 mitochondrial DNA profiles from Mesolithic, Neolithic Starčevo and LBK sites (7th/6th millennium BC) from the Carpathian Basin and south-eastern Europe. Abstract Recently we identified ( R , S )-2-acetyl-1-(4′-chlorophenyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline ( 6 ) as a potent non-competitive AMPA receptor antagonist able to prevent epileptic seizures. We report here the optimized synthesis of compound 6 , its resolution by chiral preparative HPLC, and the absolute configuration of ( R )-enantiomer established by X-ray diffractometry. The biological tests of the single enantiomers revealed that higher anticonvulsant and antagonistic effects reside in ( R )-enantiomer as also suggested by molecular modeling studies.

Novel multimetabolite prediction of walnut consumption by a urinary biomarker model in a free-living population: the PREDIMED study.

The beneficial impact of walnuts on human health has been attributed to their unique chemical composition. In order to characterize the dietary walnut fingerprinting, spot urine samples from two sets of 195 (training) and 186 (validation) individuals were analyzed by an HPLC-q-ToF-MS untargeted metabolomics approach, selecting the most discriminating metabolites by multivariate data analysis (VIP ≥ 1.5). Rationale: Dopaminergic neurotransmission, in particular the mesolimbic pathway, is involved in spontaneous locomotor activity and in morphine-induced hyperactivity, since the drugs acting on DA receptors can modify the action of morphine and this effect could be dependent on the type of DA receptor affected.
