Prevalence of systemic diseases among patients requesting dental consultation in the public and private systems

2010

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and aetiology of systemic disease among patients requesting dental treatment in public and private practice. Study Design: A retrospective analysis was performed of the medical histories of 2000 patients requesting dental treatment during the year 2009. One thousand patients came from the Fontiñas Primary Care Oral and Dental Health Unit of the Galician Health Service (SERGAS), Spain, and the other thousand from a private clinic; both clinics were situated in Santiago de Compostela, La Coruña, Spain. The data collected were the following: demographic data (age and sex), presence or absence of systemic diseases and the nosologic categories, and drug hi…

Diagnostic approach to microcephaly in childhood: a two-center study and review of the literature.

2014

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic approach to microcephaly in childhood and to identify the prevalence of the various underlying causes/disease entities. Method: We conducted a retrospective study on a cohort of 680 children with microcephaly (399 males, 281 females; mean age at presentation 7-8mo, range 1mo-5y) from patients presenting to Charité - University Medicine Berlin (n=474) and University Hospital Dresden (n=206). Patient discharge letters were searched electronically to identify cases of microcephaly, and then the medical records of these patients were used to analyze parameters for distribution. Results: The putative aetiology for microcephaly was ascertain…

Bifid mandibular condyles: A systematic review.

2018

Background Bifid mandibular condyle (BMC) constitutes an extremely rare disorder characterized by a duplication of the head of the mandibular condyle. Its prevalence ranges from 0.31% to 1.82% in the published literature. Objectives The primary objective was to describe the main etiological, clinical and radiological characteristics of patients with BMCs and the existent treatment options. The secondary objective was to simultaneously include the characteristics of two new cases of BMC. Material and Methods An electronic search in Pubmed (MEDLINE), Scopus and The Cochrane Library was carried out by two independent reviewers until April 2018. Prospective or retrospective cohort studies, case…

First results of a European multi-center registry of patients with anorectal malformations.

2013

Background: The European consortium on anorectal malformations (ARM-NET) was established to improve the health care of patients and to identify genetic and environmental risk factors. The aim of the present study was to present the first results on clinical data of a large European cohort of ARM patients based on our registry. Methods: In 2010, the registry was established including patient characteristics and data on diagnosis, surgical therapy, and outcome regarding complications. Patients born between 2007 and 2012 were retrospectively added. A descriptive analysis of this cohort was performed. Results: Two hundred and three ARM patients were included. Syndromes or chromosomal abnormalit…

Central nervous system (CNS) cancer in children and young people in the European Union and its involvements with socio-economic and environmental fac…

2015

Malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumors are the leading cause of death by cancer in children and the second commonest pediatric cancer type. Despite several decades of epidemiologic research, the etiology of childhood CNS tumors is still largely unknown. A few genetic syndromes and therapeutic ionizing radiation are thought to account for 5-10% of childhood cancer, but the etiology of other cases remains unknown. Nongenetic causes, like environmental agents, are thought to explain them. However, as very few epidemiologic studies have been conducted, it is not surprising that nongenetic risk factors have not been detected. The biggest difference between cancers for which there are good…

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy in infants of less than 1year of age: which factors influence the outcome?

2004

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is a successful method of treatment for obstructive hydrocephalus. In infants, however, it is reported to have a higher failure rate. On the basis of our own data and a meta-analysis of the literature, we try to define factors prognosticating potential failure in infants aged less than 1 year. Data were collected retrospectively. Between October 1994 and October 2002, 20 ETVs were performed in 16 patients younger than 1 year. Ages ranged from 8 to 311 days (median 103). Etiology was aqueductal stenosis in all 16 patients (idiopathic in 7, posthemorrhagic in 3, postmeningitic in 3, and related to CNS or vascular malformation in 3). ETV failure was defin…

Cognitive-behavioral screening in elderly patients with new-onset epilepsy before treatment

2014

Objectives Cognitive comorbidity at epilepsy onset reflects disease severity and provides a baseline estimate of reserve capacities with regard to the effects of epilepsy and its treatment. Given the high incidence of epilepsy at an older age, this study analyzed objective and subjective cognition as well as quality of life in elderly patients with new-onset focal epilepsy before initiation of anti-epileptic treatment. Materials and methods A total of 257 untreated patients (60–95 years of age) with new-onset epilepsy underwent objective assessment of executive function (EpiTrack) and performed subjective ratings of cognition (Portland Neurotoxicity Scale) and quality of life (QoL; QOLIE-31…

An investigation of plasma interleukin-6 in sport-related concussion

2020

Background Increasing evidence suggests inflammation is an important component of concussion pathophysiology. However, its etiology, restitution, and potential clinical repercussions remain unknown. The purpose of the current study was to compare the blood concentrations of interleukin (IL) -6, a prominent inflammatory cytokine, between healthy athletes and athletes with a sport-related concussion (SRC), while addressing the potential confounds of sex, recent physical activity, and the interacting effect of concussion history. Method A prospective, observational cohort study was conducted on athletes at a single academic institute participating across 13 interuniversity sports. Follow-up of…

The Chronic Psychosocial Stress Paradigm in Male Tree Shrews: Evaluation of a Novel Animal Model for Depressive Disorders

2002

To improve our knowledge of the causal mechanisms of stress-related disorders such as depression, we need animal models that mirror the situation in patients. One promising model is the chronic psychosocial stress paradigm in male tree shrews, which is based on the territorial behaviour of these animals that can be used to establish naturally occurring challenging situations under experimental control in the laboratory. Co-existence of two males in visual and olfactory contact leads to a stable dominant-subordinate relationship, with subordinates showing distinct stress-induced behavioural and neuroendocrine alterations that are comparable to the symptoms observed during episodes of depress…

The independent role of prenatal and postnatal exposure to active and passive smoking on the development of early wheeze in children

2016

Maternal smoking during pregnancy increases childhood asthma risk, but health effects in children of nonsmoking mothers passively exposed to tobacco smoke during pregnancy are unclear. We examined the association of maternal passive smoking during pregnancy and wheeze in children aged ≤2 years.Individual data of 27 993 mother–child pairs from 15 European birth cohorts were combined in pooled analyses taking into consideration potential confounders.Children with maternal exposure to passive smoking during pregnancy and no other smoking exposure were more likely to develop wheeze up to the age of 2 years (OR 1.11, 95% CI 1.03–1.20) compared with unexposed children. Risk of wheeze was further …
