Inattentional deafness under dynamic musical conditions

2009

While inattentional blindness is a modern classic in attention and perception research, analogous phenomena of inattentional deafness are less well-known. In music, inattentional deafness has never been demonstrated under controlled experimental conditions, despite of indirect evidence for related effects. We tested inattentional deafness with real music in both musicians and non-musicians. Participants listened to the first 1’50” of Richard Strauss’ Thus Spake Zarathustra, with the experimental group having the task of counting the number of tympani beats and the control group just listening. The unexpected event was an e-guitar solo during the last 20s of this sequence. In Study 1, among …

La competenza esperta. Tipologie e trasmissione

2021

Today, the crisis of expertise coincides with the role that political and scientific decisions have assumed in tackling and solving enormous community problems: from environmental pollution to immigration, from vaccines to pandemics. On the one hand, there is an urgent need for the expertise of specialists, acquired by degrees, or the tacit, embedded knowledge of 'amateurs by profession', who intercede and translate between several areas of knowledge. On the other, this knowledge and skill is opposed, and everyone feels entitled to have their say. It is a paradox.

Teacher-researchers Exploring Design-based Research to Develop Learning Designs in Higher Education Language Teaching

2012

Due to constant changes and developments of the 21st century societies and working life, the environments in which learning takes place have changed. Novel ways to research learning in those environments and to explore how learning could be supported with the learning design are needed in order to bring about changes in teaching practices. One of those ways could be design-based research (DBR), an iterative, interventionist and flexible research strategy, which would allow cycles of developing theory of learning as well as implementing design principles in practice. This article describes how we, as teacher-researchers, have adopted a design-based research approach in two separate studies i…

Temporal constraints and creativity in bass lines of eminent jazz musicians

2023

Tämän eksploratiivisen tutkimuksen ensimmäisenä päätavoitteena on selvittää, miten päätöksentekoon ja toiminnan suunnitteluun käytettävissä oleva aika (esitettävän musiikin tempon ja harmonisen rytmin mukaan mitattuna) on yhteydessä luovuuteen huipputason jazzbasistien bassolinjoissa, kun luovuutta mitataan sävelkuvioiden vaihtelevuutena. Tutkimuksen toisena päätavoitteena on selvittää, onko laajan tietovaraston oppiminen välttämätön edellytys luovuudelle bassolinjojen rakentamisen yhteydessä. Aineisto koostuu 42:sta Paul Chambersin ja Ron Carterin bassolinjan nuotinnoksesta, joissa kaikki neljäsosanuoteista poikkeavat sävelkestot on joko poistettu tai muutettu neljäsosanuoteiksi. Aineiston…

Tune recognition from melody, rhythm and harmony

2009

Earlier studies have shown that listeners recognise familiar tunes. With tunes that are manipulated in some way, melody has been shown to be more important for recognition than rhythm. The present study examined the importance of melody, rhythm and harmony for tune recognition by listeners with varying musical expertise. Forty-six participants, divided into three groups according to their musical expertise, heard the first two phrases of familiar tunes in four different versions: melody, rhythm, melody with harmony and rhythm with harmony. The participants were asked to identify the tunes. A two-factor ANOVA was conducted with the four versions of presentation and the three groups of partic…

Making experts-by-experience : governmental ethnography of participatory initiatives in Finnish social welfare organisations

2018

This dissertation analyses expertise-by-experience in Finnish social welfare organisations as part of the participatory practices presented as new democracy. It employs a governmental ethnographic method to investigate how a person with difficult experiences is made into ‘an expert of one’s own life’ and how the subjectivity thus created is connected to different possibilities and rationales of participation. It asks: 1. What characterises the subjectivities created in the initiatives? 2. How (through which practices) are the participants constructed as experts? In this summary article the democratic quality of expert-making practices is interpreted through a critical democratic lens by inq…
