Evidence for mechanical and chemical alteration of iron-nickel meteorites on Mars: Process insights for Meridiani Planum
2011
The weathering of meteorites found on Mars involves chemical and physical processes that can provide clues to climate conditions at the location of their discovery. Beginning on sol 1961, the Opportunity rover encountered three large iron meteorites within a few hundred meters of each other. In order of discovery, these rocks have been assigned the unofficial names Block Island, Shelter Island, and Mackinac Island. Each rock presents a unique but complimentary set of features that increase our understanding of weathering processes at Meridiani Planum. Significant morphologic characteristics interpretable as weathering features include (1) a large pit in Block Island, lined with delicate iro…
Soil fungal community composition does not alter along a latitudinal gradient through the maritime and sub-Antarctic
2012
We investigated the relationships between fungal community composition, latitude and a range of physicochemical parameters in 58 soils sampled from a 2370 km latitudinal gradient between South Georgia (54 S, 38 W) in the sub-Antarctic and Mars Oasis (72 S, 68 W) on Alexander Island in the southern maritime Antarctic. Our study, which is based on approximately ten times the number of samples used in previous similar studies, indicates that latitude and its associated environmental parameters are not related to fungal community composition. Significant changes in the composition of soil fungal communities were observed in relation to gradients of the ratio of total organic carbon to nitrogen,…
Individual baseline behavioral traits predict the resilience phenotype after chronic social defeat
2021
Abstract Chronic social defeat (CSD) has been widely used as a psychosocial stress model in mice, with the magnitude of CSD-induced social avoidance as the major behavioral hallmark of the resilient and susceptible groups. Despite significant progress in the study of the neurobiology of resilient and susceptible mice, the nature and ethological relevance of CSD-induced social avoidance and social approach, particularly measured using a CD1 mouse, needs conceptual clarification. Based on the findings of a recent study revealing substantial individuality in genetically homogeneous inbred mice, we investigated whether certain baseline individual characteristics of male C57BL/6J mice predict th…

Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory: Fast Response Space Missions for Early Time Phase of Gamma Ray Bursts
2013
One of the unexplored domains in the study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is the early time phase of the optical light curve. We have proposed Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) to address this question through extraordinary opportunities presented by a series of small space missions. The UFFO is equipped with a fast-response Slewing Mirror Telescope that uses a rapidly moving mirror or mirror array to redirect the optical beam rather than slewing the entire spacecraft or telescope to aim the optical instrument at the GRB position. The UFFO will probe the early optical rise of GRBs with sub-second response, for the first time, opening a completely new frontier in GRB and transient studies. Its…
Short Ammonium Chloride Loading Test for Evaluation of Hyperparathyroidism
1981
The dilemma in the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is reflected by three factors: Hypercalcemia is still regarded as the most important diagnostic sign, but unless multiple determinations of serum calcium are done, the so-called borderline cases will be missed. Tests that readily identify HPT combine either simple performance, widespread use and low accuracy (CP, TRP, PEI, TMP/GFR)l or sophisticated methods, limited use and high accuracy (PTH, Ca+++, c-AMP). Consequently, some authors perform neck explorations to cure patients with recurrent nephrolithiasis who do not fulfill the diagnostic criteria of HPT. However, the stone recurrence rate may then reach 75%2,3 In this situation, t…
Extracting science from Mössbauer spectroscopy on Mars
2003
[1] Deployment by the Mars Exploration Rovers of backscatter Mossbauer spectrometers offers an incredible opportunity to (1) elucidate the iron mineralogies of rocks, soils, and atmospheric dust and (2) gain insight into the physical event by which the mineralogy came into existence and consequently acquire information having potential for yielding ancient planetary history relevant to broad issues including the question of life. Determining the mineralogy is done by subjecting raw data to reduction algorithms and generating products known as Mossbauer parameters, which are highly characteristic. Mixed mineralogies are treated through deconvolution. Through being able to exploit Mossbauer m…
CALOS: an experiment to study the solar corona with an array of NTD Ge microcalorimeters
2002
In response to the Italian Space Agency announcement "New Ideas for Space Missions", we have proposed an observatory "CALorimetri per Osservazioni Solari" (CALOS) that will perform spatially resolved (Deltatheta similar to 2) X-ray spectroscopy of the solar corona over the 0.1 - 10 keV band using an array of NTD germanium microcalorimeters. The observatory will also include an X-ray polarimeter of radically new design that will study the hard X-ray solar emission and its polarization and will serve as a flare alarm.
Co-simulation platform based on systemc for multiprocessor system on chip architecture exploration
2007
Currently multiprocessor embedded systems are the principal vectors of semiconductor industry. Modelling, validating and analyzing a system performances impose the evolution of the traditional simulation techniques. In this paper we define the methodology we used in constructing the STARSoC co-simulation environment. This platform aims to explore at higher levels of abstractions a multiprocessors system on chip architectures. The platform reference design contains several OpenRISC 1200 Instruction Set Simulators (ISSs) wrapped under SystemC, and some basic peripherals within the SystemC simulation framework. Our purpose is to develop a complete design space exploration tool. In order to ass…
Experiments on Concurrent Artificial Environment
2001
We show how the simulation of concurrent system is of interest for both behavioral studies and strategies of learning applied on prey-predator problems. In our case learning studies into unknown environment have been applied to mobile units by using genetic algorithms (GA). A set of trajectories, generated by GA, are able to build a description of the external scene driving a predators to a prey. Here, an example of prey-predator strategy, based on field of forces, is proposed. The evolution of the corespondent system can be formalized as an optimization problem and, for that purpose, GA can be use to give the right solution at this problem. This approach could be applied to the autonomous r…
