Synthesis, physico-chemical and biological study of trialkylsiloxyalkyl amine coated iron oxide/oleic acid magnetic nanoparticles for the treatment o…
2008
New original water-soluble magnetic nanoparticles based on natural components, magnetite–oleic acid–biologically active silyl modified alkanolamine, were synthesized. Physico-chemical characterization, i.e. magnetic properties, concentration of magnetite, size of iron oxide core, of the nanoparticles synthesized and the corresponding magnetic fluids obtained, was carried out. Magnetic fluids were screened for in vitro cytotoxicity concerning human fibrosarcoma (HT-1080), mouse hepatoma (MG-22A) monolayer tumour cell lines and normal mouse fibroblasts (NIH 3T3). They possess low or moderate cytotoxic effects, are non-toxic, exhibit high NO-induction ability and strongly change tumour cell mo…
Role of iron in the pathogenicity of Vibrio damsela for fish and mammals.
1994
The ability to obtain iron of 14 isolates of Vibrio damsela with different degrees of virulence for mice and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) has been evaluated in artificial and natural iron-restricted environments. All strains were capable of utilizing haemoglobin (Hb) and ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) as the sole iron sources in vitro. However, only virulent V. damsela strains were able to resist the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of human and turbot sera, their growth being enhanced by the addition of Hb and FAC. The inhibitory effect of these sera on the growth of the non-pathogenic strain (ATCC 35083), however, was reversed by heat treatment (56 degrees C for 60 min). The role o…
Ethnocentrism Effects on Consumers’ Behavior during COVID-19 Pandemic
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic has upset everyone’s normal daily activities, generating psychiatric disorders and changing consumers’ preferences. Among others, the agri-food sector has experienced strong changes and, during the lockdown period, Italian consumers modified their purchasing habits in response to the fear and uncertainty generated by the spread of the virus. In order to find out the main consequences of the shock suffered during the period and to understand which factors have affected purchasing choices, an online survey was conducted on 286 Italian consumers. The results show that ethnocentrism has been the factor that most has influenced consumers’ behavior during the lockdown period…
Costuming in Seán Keating’s self-portraits: theatrical guise or political disguise?
2018
The Common Good Balance Sheet, an Adequate Tool to Capture Non-Financials?
2019
In relation to organizational performance measurement, there is a growing concern about the creation of value for people, society and the environment. The traditional corporate reporting does not adequately satisfy the information needs of stakeholders for assessing an organization&rsquo
The case for strategic international alliances to harness nutritional genomics for public and personal health
2005
Nutrigenomics is the study of how constituents of the diet interact with genes, and their products, to alter phenotype and, conversely, how genes and their products metabolise these constituents into nutrients, antinutrients, and bioactive compounds. Results from molecular and genetic epidemiological studies indicate that dietary unbalance can alter gene-nutrient interactions in ways that increase the risk of developing chronic disease. The interplay of human genetic variation and environmental factors will make identifying causative genes and nutrients a formidable, but not intractable, challenge. We provide specific recommendations for how to best meet this challenge and discuss the need …
Gas-phase hydrogenation of propionitrile on copper-lanthanide oxides
2009
Abstract The hydrogenation of propionitrile on copper-lanthanide oxide catalysts (2Cu·CeO 2 and 4Cu·Ln 2 O 3 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd)) was studied in the gas phase. The activity of the catalysts varies with the lanthanide in the order 2Cu·CeO 2 > 4Cu·Pr 2 O 3 > 4Cu·La 2 O 3 ≥ 4Cu·Nd 2 O 3 , while the activation energies varies in the opposite order, except for 2Cu·CeO 2 . The main product was the primary amine, n -propylamine. The formation of the unstable imine CH 3 CH 2 N CHCH 3 as a major product over 2Cu·CeO 2 seems to be consistent with the acidity of the catalyst. The catalysts were more selective than conventional copper impregnation catalysts, Cu (10 wt.%) on SiO 2 , La 2 O 3 or CeO 2 ,…
Combining organocatalysis and lanthanide catalysis: a sequential one-pot quadruple reaction sequence/hetero-Diels-Alder asymmetric synthesis of funct…
2016
A stereoselective one-pot synthesis of functionalized complex tricyclic polyethers has been achieved using the combination of secondary amine and lanthanide catalysis. This one-pot quadruple reaction/Hetero-Diels–Alder sequence gave good yields (per step) as well as excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities. Furthermore, the particular combination of lanthanide complexes with organocatalysis is one of the first examples described for sequential catalysis.
Changes in surgicaL behaviOrs dUring the CoviD-19 pandemic. The SICE CLOUD19 Study
2021
Abstract Background The spread of the SARS-CoV2 virus, which causes COVID-19 disease, profoundly impacted the surgical community. Recommendations have been published to manage patients needing surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey, under the aegis of the Italian Society of Endoscopic Surgery, aims to analyze how Italian surgeons have changed their practice during the pandemic. Methods The authors designed an online survey that was circulated for completion to the Italian departments of general surgery registered in the Italian Ministry of Health database in December 2020. Questions were divided into three sections: hospital organization, screening policies, and safety profile of…
Remote Photoplethysmography for Evaluation of Cutaneous Sensory Nerve Fiber Function
2021
About 2% of the world’s population suffers from small nerve fiber dysfunction, neuropathy, which can result in severe pain. This condition is caused by damage to the small nerve fibers and its assessment is challenging, due to the lack of simple and objective diagnostic techniques. The present study aimed to develop a contactless photoplethysmography system using simple instrumentation, for objective and non-invasive assessment of small cutaneous sensory nerve fiber function. The approach is based on the use of contactless photoplethysmography for the characterization of skin flowmotions and topical heating evoked vasomotor responses. The feasibility of the technique was evaluated on volunt…
