Forecasting Errors of New Venture Survival
2014
This article studies entrepreneurs' forecast errors around market entry. Using data on nascent entrepreneurs in the U.S. and start-ups in Finland, we find that besides being overoptimistic on average in both countries, entrepreneurs' survival expectations can barely distinguish survival from exits. Moreover, about one fourth of the entrepreneurs do not provide an estimate for the survival of a typical venture. However, among those that do provide it, the estimates are less overoptimistic. We also compare the forecast accuracy of entrepreneurs to those of macroeconomic forecasters. Our findings provide guidance for the development of positive theories of entrepreneurial belief formation and …

Founding family leadership and industry profitability
2008
Published version of an article from the journal: Small Business Economics In this article, we argue that firms in high-margin industries can benefit from founding family influence. Specifically, in more profitable markets, the influence of the founding family provides an additional corporate governance-monitoring function. The sample consists of 294 firm-year observations from 98 publicly traded companies headquartered in Sweden, representing approximately half of all non-financial traded firms. Our support that the effect of family leadership in publicly held firms should be assessed in relation to the intensity of industry competition
Knowledge assets for internationalization strategy proposal
2021
[EN] Lack of trust, lack of references and the confidential nature of cybersecurity projects make internationalization in companies from the cybersecurity sector a great challenge. The development of lean methodologies over recent years has presented a method to reduce time and effort, measure performance in each step and pivot when it is necessary to apply a process to a different field. Considering that internationalization resembles entrepreneurship, because of uncertainty and risk in a new market where the value proposition should be validated, the Lean Start-up philosophy will serve as a theoretical framework in which to operate. The study of international challenges of cybersecurity c…

Our study involves six entrepreneurs from Canada, Finland, and…

The impact of institutional and macroeconomic conditions on aggregate business bankruptcy
2021
Abstract This paper investigates the aggregate business bankruptcy in relation to three macro-level factors: the government effectiveness, entrepreneurship activity and control of corruption for six European countries during the period from 2004 to 2017. We employ fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) and partial least squares regression (PLS). Our findings show that countries with a high level of new firm creation and entrepreneurial activity can lead to a rise in the number of company failures. Furthermore, countries with a low corruption index and high levels of government effectiveness can mitigate insolvency. Our results have several policy implications for the evaluation …
Empreendedorismo, inovação e internacionalização: o papel moderador das instituições

Abstract The favorable effects of innovation and internationalization on the development of the economies of countries have been prominent factors in multiple management studies. The objective of this document is to make a theoretical review of the studies contained in the ScienceDirect (Elsevier) and ResearchGate databases, to offer an integrating framework of those institutional factors in the countries that favor the positive spillover of these two strategic actions carried out by companies: innovation and internationalization. As a result, we observed that an institutional framework characterized by a simplification of bureaucratic administrative procedures to access the financial resou…
