Ceftolozane Pharmacokinetics in a Septic Critically Ill Patient under Different Extracorporeal Replacement Therapies
2019
Ceftolozane-tazobactam (C/T), a novel fifth-generation cephalosporin/β-lactamase inhibitor combination active against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat complicated intra-abdominal and urinary tract

Do editors have a silver bullet? an agent-based model of peer review
2014
This paper presents an agent-based model of peer review that looks at the effect of different editorial policies of referee selection. We tested four author/referee matching scenarios as follows: random selection of referees, selection of referees with a similar status to submission authors, selection of higher-skilled and lower skilled referees. We tested these scenarios against three types of referee behaviour, i.e., fair, unreliable and strategic and measured their implications for the quality and efficiency of the process. Results show that in case of randomness of referee judgment, any editorial policy is detrimental for peer review. If referees behave strategically, certain matching p…
Regulatory mechanisms of estrogen on vascular ageing
2019
Women can be considered hemodynamically younger than men of the same age, based on epidemiological studies establishing that the incidence of vascular diseases in women is relatively lower compared to that in aged-matched men. However, after menopause, these numbers increase to values that are close to those found in men. Vascular ageing is associated with structural and functional changes of the vascular wall, including endothelial dysfunction, arterial stiffening, and remodelling, as well as impaired angiogenesis, which become major risk factors in the development of cardiovascular disease.
Alzheimer’s disease and infections, where we stand and where we go
2014
Editorial Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder, which represents the most common form of dementia, one of the major causes of disability in later life. Age is the greatest risk factor for AD, which typically affects people aged 65 years and over, with an age-standardised prevalence of 4.4 [1]. However, AD is not a normal part of ageing and advanced age alone does not justify the disease. Several pathways have been implicated in AD pathophysiology, the most described is the neurodegenerative one, which lead to the brain accumulation of beta-amyloid and neurofibrillary tangles, aggregations of hyperphosphorylated tau protein, macroscopically resulting in brain atrop…
Sex, gender and immunosenescence: a key to understand the different lifespan between men and women?
2013
Gender and sex are known to be associated with longevity. While males are usually stronger, females live longer. In the Western world, the life expectancy of individual born between 2005 and 2010 is 80.4 for women and 73.4 for men [1]. Potential factors have been examined to explain this disagreement. It is possible distinguish advantage in longevity related to biological traits and factors related to socio-cultural characteristics of the population. Males and females have different behavioral tendencies, social responsibilities and expectation. So, differences in mortality between men and women can be not only a matter of sex that refers to biological differences, but also a matter of “soc…

Pušu procesuālās tiesības mantojuma lietās.
2019
Pēc mantojuma atstājēja nāves viņa statusu ieņem tā mantinieks, taču ne vienmēr katram atstātajam mantojumam ir mantinieki, kas vēlas pārņemt mantojuma atstājēja tiesības un saistības, un tādā gadījumā kreditori nevar vērst piedziņu pret mantiniekiem. Kreditori var lūgt izsludināt mantojuma atklāšanos un lūgt iecelt mantojuma masai aizgādni, taču tas ir laikietilpīgs process. Darba autore darbā izvirzījusi mērķi noskaidrot, vai mantojuma masas aizgādņa iecelšanas procesa ilgums neapgrūtina kreditoru intereses parāda piedzīšanas procesā. Darbs sastāv no trīs nodaļām, kurās sniegts mantojuma masas un procesuālo tiesību skaidrojums un izvērtēts, kā aizsargāt kreditoru intereses mantojuma lietā…
Hypertonic Stress and Amino Acid Deprivation Both Increase Expression of mRNA for Amino Acid Transport System A
2004
The activity of amino acid transport system A ([Oxender and Christensen, 1963][1]) is regulated in a variety of different ways, the best studied being the increases of its activity caused by starving cells of amino acids or by exposing them to hypertonicity (for review see [McGivan and Pastor-
