Evaluation of the interelemental effect in X-ray fluorescence analysis by the total addition method

1992

An algorithm for quantifying interelemental effects in X-ray fluorescence techniques is developed. By applying an addition process, the ratio between the mass absorption coefficients of the analyte and the unknown sample (μi*/μs*) is calculated to correct the fluorescence intensity of the element to be determined and linearize the I-c calibration plot. This coefficient can be calculated graphically and numerically. The method is applied to the determination of tin in lead alloys with good results over wide concentration ranges.

A micellar multitasking device: sensing pH windows and gauging the lipophilicity of drugs with fluorescent signals.

2010

A multitasking fluorescent device can be obtained by forming micelles of Triton X-100, containing a lipophilic macrocyclic Cu(2+) complex and the coordinating fluorophore Coumarin 343 (C343), which features a COOH moiety. At low pH the two micellised components do not interact, and the fluorescence of Courmarin 343 (C343) is intense. At intermediate pH, C343 is deprotonated and coordinates to the Cu(2+) centre in its apical position, with fluorescence quenching. At higher pH the deprotonated C343 is displaced from Cu(2+) by the formation of an OH(-) complex, and the fluorescence is revived. This allows the system to carry out its first task as it behaves as an "on-off-on" fluorescent sensor…

Converging paths to Notes

1995

The nature of the information systems needed in a networked firm is not well known: nor is the process leading to particular solutions. Describes a small computer‐consulting company which works as a network of independent consultants, and analyses the slow and circuitous path from recognizing its IS/IT needs to its commitment to a particular solution as seven steps; using ideas of structuration theory as a focus. During the selection process, participants formed new interpretations of the firm, of technology, and of the appropriate process towards a feasible solution. New resources – both material and symbolic – were acquired to enable the search. Existing “norms” provided boundaries for th…

Energy consumption and improvement of energy efficiency for the European agricultural-food system

2020

This work addresses the subjects of reducing fossil energy consumption and the interventions to improve energy efficiency in the European agricultural-food sys-tem. Following an overview on both such subjects, the results of European projects TESLA and SCOoPE are also analysed with attention to best practices and technologies available to improve energy efficiency in order to reduce the fossil energy use in agri-food systems of Mediterranean countries. A list of Key Performance Indicators for the fruit and vegetable sector, useful for comparative analyses aimed at selecting best methods of energy management and technologies for improving energy efficiency, is reported. Finally, a brief focu…

Evaluation of different similarity indices as measures of succession in arthropod communities of the forest floor after clear-cutting.

1979

Communities of spiders (Araneae) and beetles (Coleoptera) living in the soil and litter of clear-cut areas were compared with those of intact forest stands. Sixteen different indices of similarity were tested on three sets of material: spiders and beetles examined during one year in three clear-cut areas felled 3, 6 and 9 years earlier, and spiders in one clear-cut area examined during 7 successive years after felling. Other sources of evidence showed that succession in the spider community was divergent for at least 7 years after felling. The indices that seemed to express the changes best were: (1) Kendall's rank correlation test, (2) the Bray-Curtis measure, (3) Renkonen's percentage sim…

Resonant Tunneling in 2D-Waveguides with Several Resonators

2021

In this chapter, we consider a two-dimensional waveguide that coincides with a strip having \(n+1\) narrows of small diameter \(\varepsilon \). All narrows are of the same shape and are spaced from each other by equal distances. Parts of the waveguide between two neighboring narrows play the role of resonators. The wave function of a free electron satisfies the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation in the waveguide. Near a simple eigenvalue of the closed resonator there are n resonant peaks of height close to 1. We let \(\varepsilon \rightarrow 0\) and obtain asymptotic formulas for the resonant energies and for the widths of the resonant peaks at their half-height. Th…

A technical note on an experimental device to measure friction coefficient in sheet metal forming

2006

Abstract In the paper the authors present the results of several experimental tests aimed to determine the Coulomb friction coefficient in sheet metal forming operations at the varying of the sheet metal material and for different operative conditions. In particular a few pressure and lubricating conditions have been investigated. In order to develop such experiments a dedicated fixture was designed and set-up starting from the one proposed by Wilson.

Structure and Doping Determined Thermoelectric Properties of Bi2Se3Thin Films Deposited by Vapour–Solid Technique

2019

In this work, a simple catalyst-free vapour-solid deposition method was applied for controlled deposition of two types (planar and disordered) of continuous Bi 2 Se 3 nanostructured thin films on different (fused quartz/glass, mica, graphene) substrates. Characterisation of electron transport (type, concentration and mobility of the main charge carriers) and thermoelectric properties (Seebeck coefficient and power factor) showed that proposed in this work deposition method allows to obtain Bi 2 Se 3 thin films with power factor comparable and even higher than reported for the Bi 2 Se 3 thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy technique. Power factor of the best obtained thin films can be …

Structure-determined thermoelectric properties of Bi2Se3 thin films deposited by vapour-solid technique

2018

International audience; In this work, a simple catalyst-free vapour-solid deposition method is applied for controlled obtaining of two types (planar and disordered) continuous Bi2Se3 nanostructured thin films on different (fused quartz/glass, mica, graphene) substrates. Performed for the deposited thin films transport and thermoelectric characterization (type, concentration and mobility of the main charge carriers, Seebeck coefficient and power factor) showed that proposed deposition method allows to fabricate “low-doped” Bi2Se3 thin films with power factor comparable and even higher than reported for the Bi2Se3 thin films fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy technique.
