In vitro comparison of flexural strength and elastic modulus of three provisional crown materials used in fixed prosthodontics

2013

Objectives: To evaluate and compare the flexural strength and the elastic moduli of three provisional crown materials (methyl methacrylate based autopolymerized resin, bis acryl composite based autopolymerized resin and urethane dimethacrylate based light polymerized resin) after storing in artificial saliva and testing at intervals of 24 hours and 7 days. Study design: A metal master mould with four slots of dimensions 25x2x2 mm was fabricated to obtain samples of standard dimensions. A total of 135 specimens were thus obtained with 45 each of three provisional materials. Further 15 samples of each group were tested after storing for one hour at room temperature and again at intervals of 2…

Disentangling Housing Supply to Shift towards Smart Cities: Analysing Theoretical and Empirical Studies

2022

The search for a pleasant home has concerned people ever since. Paradoxically, people are facing strong difficulties in finding a decent place to settle their lives in cities. As such, the housing market regained momentum in connection with the development of Smart Cities, where life quality of residents is strongly emphasized. Well-being in the metropolis is affected by a wide variety of factors with housing supply being among the most important, hence stirred by financing costs, construction costs, vacancy rate, sales delay, inflation rate, housing stock, price of agricultural land, and regulation. The present article reviews empirical studies on housing supply for a better understanding …

Static Deflection Compensation of Multi-Link Flexible Manipulators Under Gravity

2022

The static deflection compensation method of a planar multi-link flexible manipulator is proposed using the feedback from inertial sensors mounted at the tip of each link. The proposed compensation technique is validated experimentally using a high-precision laser tracker. The proposed strategy is experimentally verified using a three-link flexible manipulator. A strategy to compensate for the centripetal and tangential acceleration induced on the accelerometer mounted on the rotating link is proposed for correct inclination estimation. The improvement in the inclination estimation using the proposed compensation technique is verified both in simulation and experimental studies.

FATIGUE LIFE ANALYSIS OF RAIL-WELDS USING LINEAR ELASTIC FRACTURE MECHANICS

2019

The initiation and growth of fatigue cracking is mainly due to high stress concentration, heterogeneity and poor quality of weld. The detection and rectification of such weld defects are major concerns of rail network managers to reduce potential risk of rail breaks and derailments. To estimate the fatigue life of welded joints and to analyze the progress of fatigue cracks, a fracture mechanics-based analysis and fatigue models were developed using Finite Element Analysis. The initial flaw is obtained from a sample weld using ultrasonic flaw detecting machine test. Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) approach based on the Paris law was applied to determine critical crack size and the n…

Magnetic clusters from polyoxometalate complexes

1999

Abstract The present article highlights the increasing interest of polyoxometalates in molecular magnetism, providing at the same time a perspective of the state-of-the-art in this area. The main focus is the polyoxotungstates. The first aspect we discuss is that of the coordination chemistry of these metal–oxide ligands. We show that this chemistry leads to remarkable examples of well-insulated magnetic clusters of controlled nuclearity and topology. In these clusters detailed information on the nature of the magnetic exchange interactions can be extracted by using, in addition to the classical magnetic techniques (magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and EPR spectroscopy), other physica…

A second strain gradient elasticity theory with second velocity gradient inertia – Part I: Constitutive equations and quasi-static behavior

2013

Abstract A multi-cell homogenization procedure with four geometrically different groups of cell elements (respectively for the bulk, the boundary surface, the edge lines and the corner points of a body) is envisioned, which is able not only to extract the effective constitutive properties of a material, but also to assess the “surface effects” produced by the boundary surface on the near bulk material. Applied to an unbounded material in combination with the thermodynamics energy balance principles, this procedure leads to an equivalent continuum constitutively characterized by (ordinary, double and triple) generalized stresses and momenta. Also, applying this procedure to a (finite) body s…

Ventricular-vascular coupling in hypertension: methodological considerations and clinical implications.

2014

The present review is addressed to analyse the complex interplay between left ventricle and arterial tree in hypertension. The different methodological approaches to the analysis of ventricular vascular coupling in the time and frequency domain are discussed. Moreover, the role of hypertension-related changes of arterial structure and function (stiffness and wave reflection) on arterial load and how ventricular-vascular coupling modulates the process of left ventricular adaptation to hypertension are analysed. The different interplay between vascular bed and left ventricle emerges as the pathophysiological basis for the development of the multiple patterns of ventricular structural adaptatio…

On Bifurcation Analysis of Implicitly Given Functionals in the Theory of Elastic Stability

2015

In this paper, we analyze the stability and bifurcation of elastic systems using a general scheme developed for problems with implicitly given functionals. An asymptotic property for the behaviour of the natural frequency curves in the small vicinity of each bifurcation point is obtained for the considered class of systems. Two examples are given. First is the stability analysis of an axially moving elastic panel, with no external applied tension, performing transverse vibrations. The second is the free vibration problem of a stationary compressed panel. The approach is applicable to a class of problems in mechanics, for example in elasticity, aeroelasticity and axially moving materials (su…

Nonlinear vibrations of elastic beams with external general visco-elastic devices

2011

Vibration damping for slender beams is achieved by applying devices at external points. The latter consist of general single visco-elastic springpot elements. An approximate nonlinear boundary value problem is found in frequency domain that holds for moderately large vibrations or for linear beams with external nonlinear devices, both in the vicinity of primary resonances. The interaction force of a so-called springpot element is expressed as a sum of two separate forces: the first develops due to the external loading function at the device location, and the second contribution arises due to an imposed time-harmonic support excitation with no other external forces acting on the structure. Creep Modeling with Time-Dependent Damping Parameters in Piezoelectric Actuators

2019

This paper develops a creep model based on the Kelvin-Voigt model with time varying damping parameters. In the piezoelectric actuators, the creep phenomenon is an important issue in precise positioning applications as well as the hysteresis property. It is well-known that the creep effect can be represented by a series connection of a number of Kelvin-Voigt elements as a viscoelastic model. In the motion for the continuous stepwise positioning, however, the creep shape is different for each response. Since the phenomenon can be captured as temporal creep relaxation, time-dependent damping parameters are introduced to improve the reproducibility of the creep for the various motion. On the ot…
