Efficient protocol for qubit initialization with a tunable environment
2017
We propose an efficient qubit initialization protocol based on a dissipative environment that can be dynamically adjusted. Here the qubit is coupled to a thermal bath through a tunable harmonic oscillator. On-demand initialization is achieved by sweeping the oscillator rapidly into resonance with the qubit. This resonant coupling with the engineered environment induces fast relaxation to the ground state of the system, and a consecutive rapid sweep back to off resonance guarantees weak excess dissipation during quantum computations. We solve the corresponding quantum dynamics using a Markovian master equation for the reduced density operator of the qubit-bath system. This allows us to optim…

Emerging macroscopic pretreatment
2021
Macroscopic pretreatment of food waste aims at the preparation of the food matrix for subsequent processing and recovery steps. The preparatory steps involve the adjustment of the phase content and properties (water, solid, fats content), the moderation of enzyme activity as well as prevention and control of any microbial growth (Galanakis, 2012; Galanakis et al., 2010a). In recent times, several emerging technologies have been researched, developed, and/or adapted from other fields for drying, sterilization, enzyme inactivation, and enhancing mass transfer in food and biomaterials. This chapter focuses on these upcoming technologies with potential applications to food waste recovery and in…

Presence of Enniatins and Beauvericin in Romanian Wheat Samples: From Raw Material to Products for Direct Human Consumption
2017
In this study, a total of 244 wheat and wheat-based products collected from Romania were analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in order to evaluate the presence of four enniatins (ENs; i.e., ENA, ENA1, ENB, and ENB1) and beauvericin (BEA). For the wheat samples, the influence of agricultural practices was assessed, whereas the results for the wheat-based products were used to calculate the estimated daily intake of emerging mycotoxins through wheat consumption for the Romanian population. ENB presented the highest incidence (41% in wheat and 32% in wheat-based products), with its maximum levels of 815 μg kg−1 and 170 μg kg−1 in wheat and wheat-based products,…
Learning Environments in the 21st Century: A Mapping of the Literature
2020
Education has been transformed by significant breakthroughs in AI, mobile internet, cloud computing and Big Data technologies. More personalized educational settings are developed by increasingly integrating contemporary learning environments with new technologies. However, few examples of executed AI enabled learning interventions have been identified. Therefore, a mapping of literature on AI enabled learning systems was done. 121 studies published in the last five years were analyzed. This paper presents a discussion regarding on what mainly AI enabled contemporary learning environments are designed to achieve. The major contribution of the study is bringing awareness to researchers and s…
Holes in the Dike: the global savings glut, U.S. house prices and the long shadow of banking deregulation
2015
We explore empirically how capital inflows into the US and financial deregulation within the United States interacted in driving the run-up (and subsequent decline) in US housing prices over the period 1990-2010. To obtain an ex ante measure of financial liberalization, we focus on the history of interstate-banking deregulation during the 1980s, i.e. prior to the large net capital inflows into the US from China and other emerging economies. Our results suggest a long shadow of deregulation: in states that opened their banking markets to out-of-state banks earlier, house prices were more sensitive to capital inflows. We provide evidence that global imbalances were a major positive funding sh…
El conocimiento pedagógico y la periferia del universo educativo
2006
In this work the authors reflect on the dynamics generated between the universe of education and educational theory, as the fruit of the incorporation to that universe of areas and forms which up until then had been external, borderline or marginal to it. After an introduction, the article applies this general perspective to diverse spheres: in the fi rst place, to what the consideration of non-formal and formal education has meant for educational theory; in second place, the same is done with respect to the idea of permanent education; third, it is applied to the repercussions that the real recognition of gender equality in education has on pedagogical discourse; fourth, to what the possib…
A critical review on the implementation of static data sampling techniques to detect network attacks
2021
International audience; Given that the Internet traffic speed and volume are growing at a rapid pace, monitoring the network in a real-time manner has introduced several issues in terms of computing and storage capabilities. Fast processing of traffic data and early warnings on the detected attacks are required while maintaining a single pass over the traffic measurements. To palliate these problems, one can reduce the amount of traffic to be processed by using a sampling technique and detect the attacks based on the sampled traffic. Different parameters have an impact on the efficiency of this process, mainly, the applied sampling policy and sampling ratio. In this paper, we investigate th…
An efficient data model for energy prediction using wireless sensors
2019
International audience; Energy prediction is in high importance for smart homes and smart cities, since it helps reduce power consumption and provides better energy and cost savings. Many algorithms have been used for predicting energy consumption using data collected from Internet of Things (IoT) devices and wireless sensors. In this paper, we propose a system based on Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) to predict energy consumption of a building using collected information (e.g., light energy, day of the week, humidity, temperature, etc.) from a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). We compare our system against four other classification algorithms, namely: Linear Regression (LR), Support Vector Machin…
