Targeting the Stress System During Gestation: Is Early Handling a Protective Strategy for the Offspring?

2020

The perinatal window is a critical developmental time when abnormal gestational stimuli may alter the development of the stress system that, in turn, influences behavioral and physiological responses in the newborns. Individual differences in stress reactivity are also determined by variations in maternal care, resulting from environmental manipulations. Despite glucocorticoids are the primary programming factor for the offspring's stress response, therapeutic corticosteroids are commonly used during late gestation to prevent preterm negative outcomes, exposing the offspring to potentially aberrant stress reactivity later in life. Thus, in this study, we investigated the consequences of one…

Effects of prenatal acute stress on the behavioural reactivity in handled and non-handled rat progeny

2003

The effects of prenatal stress are dependent on the intensity and duration of the stress treatment: chronic, uncontrollable stress causes an impairment in the normal adaptive responses to physical and physiological stimuli whereas acute and mild stress facilitates the morphological development of fetal brain neurons. The presents study was designed to investigate whether a single stress exposure during pregnancy may exert a facilitatory effect on the behaviour of the juvenile progeny. The effects of a postnatal handling procedure have been also investigated. One-month prenatally stressed rats (PSR) whose dams had been restrained for 120 minutes at the 16th day of gestation, showed an increa…

Facebook’s Emotional Contagion Experiment as a Challenge to Research Ethics

2016

This article analyzes the ethical discussion focusing on the Facebook emotional contagion experiment published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2014. The massive-scale experiment manipulated the News Feeds of a large amount of Facebook users and was successful in proving that emotional contagion happens also in online environments. However, the experiment caused ethical concerns within and outside academia mainly for two intertwined reasons, the first revolving around the idea of research as manipulation, and the second focusing on the problematic definition of informed consent. The article concurs with recent research that the era of social med…

Gender differences in social and test anxiety

1990

Abstract Some cognitive and performance correlates of ‘worry’ and ‘emotionality’ components of test-anxiety were studied with particular reference to gender differences. An Italian adaptation of the Worry-Emotionality (W-E) Scale was administered to a sample of 99 high-school students, together with other scales devised to assess ‘Fear of negative evaluation’ and the subjects' perception of the real, ideal and social aspects of the Self. The Grade Point Average was taken as outcome measure of academic performance. The results show that in the male subjects, Worry correlates, as expected, with poor self-image and with negative academic performance; more complex correlations are found in fema…

Emotionality and Quality of Life in Patients with Musculoskeletal Disorders

2021

Introduction: It is well-known that musculoskeletal conditions are related with pain and anxiety. Anxiety is a complex concept that involves a transient state caused by different factors, as well as a persistent mood. Aim: The aim of the study is to reveal the associations between the discomfort caused by some musculoskeletal disorders and the emotionality (anxiety as a trait or a state) on the one hand and, on the other hand, the level of quality of life. Material and method: The study was cross-sectional and was performed in a period of 6 months on an outpatient basis of 174 patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Thus, we have taken into consideration 5 groups of patients, according to …

Sibship and Self-Esteem in Children With Asthma

2016

This study has explored the valence of sibship that may empower the self-esteem of children with asthma at the interpersonal, environmental control competence, emotionality management, and body-image levels. It has been assumed that the relationship between siblings may have a moderating effect on the negative impact that asthma has on child’s development. Seventy children suffering from chronic asthma have been involved: 40 children with siblings (experimental group) and 30 sibling-free children (control group). The children with asthma have exhibited higher levels of self-esteem in comparison with the sibling-free children. The results of the study, at the clinical significance level, hig…

At‐risk children's causal inferences given emotional feedback and their understanding of the excuse‐giving process

1994

Italian male school children, ranging in age from 7 to 10 years, were identified as at‐risk children on the basis of self‐reports, teacher questionnaires, and peer nominations assessing aggression, emotional instability, and pro‐social behaviour. Together with a normal control sample, these children participated in two studies guided by attribtional theory. In Study 1, following teacher emotional feedback of anger or sympathy for failure, attributional inferences regarding low ability or lack of effort as the cause of that failure were rated. In Study 2, controllable and uncontrollable causes of a social transgression were given, and participants rated the anticipated anger of the ‘victim’…

Language does not modulate fake news credibility, but emotion does

2020

Abstract The proliferation of fake news in internet requires understanding which factors modulate their credibility and take actions to limit their impact. A number of recent studies have shown an effect of the foreign language when making decisions: reading in a foreign language engages a more rational, analytic mode of thinking (Costa et al., 2014, Cognition). This analytic mode of processing may lead to a decrease in the credibility of fake news. Here we conducted two experiments to examine whether fake news stories presented to university students were more credible in the native language than in a foreign language. Bayesian analyses in both experiments offered support for the hypothesi…
