Eroded enamel rehardening using two intraoral appliances designs in different times of salivary exposure.

2019

Background The aim of this study was evaluated the eroded enamel rehardening potential using upper palatal and lower buccal removable appliances in different times of salivary exposure (30 min, 1h, 2h, 12h) after a single erosive challenge event. Material and Methods After initial surface hardness evaluation, bovine enamel blocks were eroded in vitro (0.01 M hydrochloric acid, pH 2.3, 30 seconds), selected (n = 160) and randomly assigned to the two appliance designs and twenty volunteers. Four enamel blocks were inserted in each removable appliance. On the in situ phase, the volunteers were instructed to use the upper palatal and lower buccal appliances simultaneously for 12 nonconsecutive …

Effect of postbleaching application of an antioxidant on enamel bond strength of three different adhesives

2010

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the shear bond strength (sbs) of three different adhesives on bleached enamel immmmediately after bleaching, bleached/delayed for 1 week, and bleached/applied antioxidizing agent. Study Design: The enamel surfaces of 144 freshly extracted incisors without any caries and restorations were flattened and divided into 12 groups. The following adhesives were investigated: Optibond FL (OFL) (three-step etch&rinse), Optibond Solo Plus (OSP) (two-step etch&rinse), Optibond All-in-One (OA) (one-step self-etch), (Kerr, Orange, USASA). Unbleached enamel groups were prepared as negative controls. The remainder surfaces were bleached with 20% Opalescent P…

Effect of antioxidants on the shear bond strength of composite resin to enamel following extra-coronal bleaching

2019

Background Recently patients need faster treatments, and delaying restoration is not possible following bleaching treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of antioxidants, namely 10% sodium ascorbate, 10% alpha-tocopherol, 10% green tea and 10% Aloe vera extract on the shear bond strength of composite resin to enamel following extra-coronal bleaching using 40% hydrogen peroxide. Material and Methods Seventy premolars were randomly assigned into 7 groups of 10 each. Group 1: bleaching treatment and no antioxidants application. Group 2: composite was built-up immediately after bleaching. Group 3: bleached specimens received composite build-up delayed by 2 weeks. Group …

Effect of disinfecting the cavity with chlorhexidine on the marginal gaps of Cl V giomer restorations

2017

Background Considering the effect of cavity disinfecting agents on the bonding and sealing ability of restorations bonded to dentin, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine (CHX) disinfecting agent on the marginal gaps of Cl V giomer restorations. Material and Methods Cl V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of 60 sound bovine permanent incisors in this in vitro study, with the occlusal and gingival margins in enamel and dentin, respectively. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups (n=30). The teeth in groups 1 and 2 were restored without and with the use of the disinfecting agent in the cavity, respectively, before applying the adhesive. BeautiBo…

Hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta with multiple impacted teeth - report of two cases

2010

Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) represents a group of developmental conditions, genomic in origin, which affect the structure and clinical appearance of enamel of all or nearly all the teeth in a more or less equal manner. It is usually inherited either as an X-linked, autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive trait. The enamel may be hypoplastic, hypomineralised or both and affected teeth may be discolored, sensitive or prone to disintegration. Diagnosis is based on the family history, pedigree plotting and meticulous clinical observation. The treatment of patients with AI should start with early diagnosis and intervention to prevent latter restorative problems. Herein, we present two case re…

Cariostatic effect of a light-cured, resin-reinforced glass-ionomer for bonding orthodontic brackets in vivo

1998

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vivo the cariostatic potential of the resin-reinforced glass-ionomer (Vitremer core build-up restorative; 3M Dental Product Division) when used as a bonding agent for orthodontic brackets. The mineral distribution and topography of the enamel surface adjacent to the bracket base was determined by quantitative microradiography (TMR) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The study was designed in split-mouth technique using 9 pairs of premolars to be extracted for orthodontic reasons. One tooth of each pair was bonded with the resin-reinforced glass-ionomer, and the control contralateral premolar with the non-fluoridated composite (Concise, 3M…

Assessment of Oxygen Expansion during Internal Bleaching with Enamel and Dentin: A Comparative In Vitro Study.

2021

Internal bleaching is a conservative, non-invasive, and simple treatment that is frequently performed in daily clinical practice. The present in vitro study analyzes the oxygen expansion of different bleaching agents resulting from the oxidation reaction when interacting with enamel and dentin. Enamel and dentin were crushed separately until obtaining a fine powder with particles of an approximate size between 0.06 and 0.2 mm. Each enamel and dentin sample were mixed with 37% carbamide peroxide (CP 37%), 30% hydrogen peroxide (HP 30%), sodium perborate (SP) combined with HP 30% (HP 30% + SP) and SP with distilled water (SP). A total of 280 1 mm diameter glass tubes were used with 70 for eac…

A tooth whitening and chemical abrasive protocol for the treatment of developmental enamel defects

2018

Abstract This clinical report describes a chemical abrasive protocol and whitening techniques to quantify modifications to the color and volume produced when eliminating white spots associated with developmental defects in enamel. Chemical (oxidative-erosive) abrasive treatment (whitening + 6.6% hydrochloric acid) resolves white spots up to a depth of 0.2 mm. At greater depths, infiltration with 16% hydrochloric acid followed by composite resin infiltration is recommended.

Influence of Bleaching Agents on Surface Roughness of Sound or Eroded Dental Enamel Specimens

2010

Purpose:  The aim of the present in vitro study was to assess the effect of bleaching agents on eroded and sound enamel specimens. Materials and Methods:  Enamel specimens prepared from human permanent anterior teeth were incubated with different bleaching agents containing active ingredients as 7.5 or 13.5% hydrogen peroxide or 35% carbamide peroxide, ranging in pH from 4.9 to 10.8. The effect of the tooth whitening agents on surface roughness was tested for sound enamel surfaces as well as for eroded enamel specimens. To provoke erosive damage, the enamel specimens were incubated for 10 hours with apple juice (pH = 3.4). Afterwards, pretreated and untreated dental slices were incubated wi…
