Acoustic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice: Direct mapping of acoustic waveguides to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

2021

Topological physics strongly relies on prototypical lattice model with particular symmetries. We report here on a theoretical and experimental work on acoustic waveguides that is directly mapped to the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chiral model. Starting from the continuous two dimensional wave equation we use a combination of monomadal approximation and the condition of equal length tube segments to arrive at the wanted discrete equations. It is shown that open or closed boundary conditions topological leads automatically to the existence of edge modes. We illustrate by graphical construction how the edge modes appear naturally owing to a quarter-wavelength condition and the conserv…

Observation of Geometric Parametric Instability Induced by the Periodic Spatial Self-Imaging of Multimode Waves

2016

Spatio-temporal mode coupling in highly multimode physical systems permits new routes for exploring complex instabilities and forming coherent wave structures. We present here the first experimental demonstration of multiple geometric parametric instability sidebands, generated in the frequency domain through resonant space-time coupling, owing to the natural periodic spatial self-imaging of a multimode quasi-continuous-wave beam in a standard graded-index multimode fiber. The input beam was launched in the fiber by means of an amplified microchip laser emitting sub-nanosecond pulses at 1064 nm. The experimentally observed frequency spacing among sidebands agrees well with analytical predic…

Hyperspectral optical near-field imaging: Looking graded photonic crystals and photonic metamaterials in color

2012

International audience; Using a scanning near-field optical microscope operating with a hyperspectral detection scheme, we report the direct observation of the mirage effect within an on-chip integrated artificial material made of a two dimensional graded photonic crystal. The light rainbow due to the material dispersion is quantified experimentally and quantitatively compared to three dimensional plane wave assisted Hamiltonian optics predictions of light propagation.

Defining and measuring the network flexibility of humanitarian supply chains: insights from the 2015 Nepal earthquake

2019

International audience; The efficient and effective response to disasters critically depends on humanitarian supply chains (HSCs). HSCs need to be flexible to adapt to uncertainties in needs, infrastructure conditions, and behavior of other organizations. The concept of ‘network flexibility’ is, however, not clearly defined. The lack of an unanimous definition has led to a lack of consistent understanding and comparisons. This paper makes a threefold contribution: first, it defines the concept of network flexibility for HSC in the context of sudden onset disasters. Second, it proposes a framework to measure network flexibility in HSCs. Third, we apply our framework to the 2015 Nepal earthqu…

Design and fabrication of an acoustic micromixer for biological media activation

2014

International audience; The bioassay of infinitesimal quantities of protein markers in biological samples is the way to early cancer detection. However, this detection can be limited by the diffusion of these macromolecules (analytes) from the bulk to the sensor chip (surface of ligands). Here, we propose a new method to overcome this drawback by the activation of the biological media during the detection step. The principle consists in using ultrasonic vibrations in order to disrupt the equilibrium states of such biomolecular reactions and performing simultaneous detection inside an acoustic micromixer. Technological realization and initial characterizations of the device have been perform…

multimodal and multi-criteria analysis for the expertise and locating faults in modern electrical components

2017

The purpose of this manuscript is to exhibit the research work solving the issue of data processing stem from defect localization techniques. This step being decisive in the failure analysis process, scientists have to harness data coming from light emission and laser techniques. Nevertheless, this analysis process is sequential and only depends on the expert’s decision. This factor leads to a not quantified probability of localization. Consequently to solve these issues, a multimodaland multicriteria analysis has been developped, taking advantage of the heterogeneous and complementary nature of light emission and laser probing techniques. This kind of process is based on advanced level too…

Vehicle localization based on scene perception

2021

The vision-based vehicle localization task is tackled as an image-based place recognition problem in this thesis. As image representation is an important process to place recognition, we proposed place recognition methods focusing on increasing the quality of image features. First, the dynamic object removal step is proposed to remove the dynamic objects, such as vehicles and pedestrians, of an image by semantic segmentation method and restore their background information by image inpainting method. Second, reducing instead of removing the noisy information of an image is proposed. Using the image blurring method to reduce the image noise, the performance of place recognition is improved wi…

Parabolic Pulse Amplifiers

2008

International audience; Recent studies in nonlinear optics have led to the discovery of a new class of ultrashort pulse generated in fiber amplifiers by the self-similar propagation of an arbitrary input pulse. These pulses with a parabolic shape and linear chirp, called `optical similaritons,' represent asymptotic solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with gain, towards which any initial pulse of given energy converges, independently of its intensity profile. Parabolic pulse amplifiers can be easily developed with standard optical fibers and commercial devices. Our goal here is to emphasize the main properties of similaritons and to discuss a few of their numerous new application…
