2013

This contribution examines the article ?Stefan Nemanjic i njegov brat Sava u spisima Dimitrija Homatina? by Vlada Stankovic (2012) critically. On the basis of Chomatenos files (nos. 1, 3, 10, 13 and 86), he tried to obtain new details about in what way and with what results political and ecclesiastical communication between Epiros and Serbia took place in the period 1215-1219/20. In the course of this, as this present study shows, he repeatedly reached rash, questionable or untenable conclusions. Also the question raised by him - with a critical intention - about the name of Stefan Nemanjic?s daughter is now once again discussed and finally decided in such a way as this was already done in …

Co-transmitter mediated facilitation by sympathetic nerve stimulation of evoked acetylcholine release from the rabbit perfused atria preparation.

1995

Rabbit atria were isolated with the extrinsic right sympathetic and vagus nerves attached and perfused with Tyrode solution. Acetylcholine overflow was determined after labelling of the transmitter stores with [14C]choline and fractionation of the radioactivity on cation exchange columns. Sympathetic nerve stimulation (SNS, 2 Hz, 3 min) carried out together with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS, 2 Hz, 3 min), but each SNS pulse preceding a vagal one by 19 ms, caused a facilitation of acetylcholine overflow of about 60% versus independent controls in the absence of SNS. Antagonists of putative neurotransmitters were tested to find out the prejunctional mediator involved in the facilitation. The …

Closer to nature: an ATP-driven bioinspired catalytic oxidation process

2013

The capability of DNA to acquire enzyme-like properties has led to the emergence of the so-called DNAzyme field; herein, we take a further leap along this nature-inspired road, demonstrating that a template assembled synthetic G-quartet (TASQ) can act as a pre-catalyst for catalytic peroxidase-mimicking oxidation reactions, whatever its nature (guanine or guanosine-based G-quartets), in an ATP-dependent manner, thereby bringing this bioinspired TASQzyme process even closer to nature.

Prenatally detected double trisomy: Klinefelter and Down syndrome

2006

Double trisomies are a rare occurrence. We report the first case of a Down and Klinefelter's syndrome (48,XXY,+21) in a fetus that was prenatally diagnosed during the 15th week of pregnancy. Even though the nasal bone was present, and the color-Doppler study of the ductus venosus and the nuchal thickness were normal, the maternal serum test results indicated an increased risk of Down syndrome and consequentially a genetic amniocentesis was performed. A 48,XXY,+21 karyotype was observed and the patient decided to terminate the pregnancy. In this case, we did not find the typical ultrasound (US) signs that would have led us to the chromosomopathy; furthermore, we emphasize the advantages of u…

Einfluß von qualitativen Stenosecharakteristika auf die Meßqualität verschiedener QCA-Systeme (Impact of lesion characteristics on the quality of mea…

1997

Biometric variability of Hadwenius tursionis (Marchi, 1873) (Digenea, Campulidae) from the intestine of the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus (Mo…

1995

The species discrimination in the family Campulidae is largely based on morphometric characters (absolute measurements and ratios). To assess the variability of this characters we have studied the campulid species Hadwenius tursionis from four Mediterranean bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from the Western Mediterranean. In H. tursionis most absolute measurements differed significantly across the infrapopulations, showing high coefficients of variation. Only egg dimensions appeared to be fairly conservative. Body ratios were less variable than absolute measurements, but growth patterns did vary significantly between the infrapopulations studied. None of the ratios previously used in r…

Role of endothelial cell stress in the pathogenesis of chronic heart failure.

2009

Endothelial cells are key modulators of diverse physiological processes, and their impaired function is a cause of numerous cardiovascular diseases. Under physiologic condition, the reactive oxygen and nitrogen mediators in endothelia lead to the signal propagation of the initial stimulus, by forming molecules with a longer half-life like hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is the focus of growing attention in endothelial biology, and consequently the enzymes involved in its generation and clearance are viewed as novel mediators of great importance. In particular, among peroxidases, myeloperoxidase is recognized as a key enzyme, capable of impairing intracellular NO reservoirs as well as p…
