Risk factors for anastomotic leakage after colorectal resection in ovarian cancer surgery: A multi-centre study.

2019

Objective. To determine pre-/intraoperative risk factors for anastomotic leak after modified posterior pelvic exenteration (MPE) or colorectal resection in ovarian cancer and to create a practical instrument for predicting anastomotic leak risk. Background. In advanced ovarian cancer surgery, there is rather limited published evidence, drawn from a small sample, providing information about risk factors for anastomotic leak. Methods. Eight hospitals participated in this retrospective study. Data on 695 patients operated for ovarian cancer with primary anastomosis were included (January 2010-June 2018). Twelve pre-/intraoperative variables were analysed as potential independent risk factors f…

Current practice in nutrition after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation – Results from a survey among hematopoietic stem cell transpla…

2021

Summary Background Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT) is frequently associated with impaired oral intake and malnutrition, which potentially increases morbidity and mortality. Therefore, nutrition is one of the major challenges in the post-transplant period. Methods To document the current clinical approach in nutritional treatment, we designed a questionnaire concerning the current practice in nutrition after alloHSCT and distributed it to German speaking centers performing alloHSCT in Germany, Austria and Switzerland between November 2018 and March 2020. Twenty-eight (39%) of 72 contacted centers completed the survey, 23 from Germany, two from Austria and three …

Does Pasteurized Donor Human Milk Efficiently Protect Preterm Infants Against Oxidative Stress?

2019

International audience; Pasteurized donor human milk (DHM) is the preferred alternative for infant nutrition when own mother's milk (OMM) is unavailable. Whether DHM is an efficient means for protecting preterm infants from oxidative stress remains unknown. We quantified a panel of oxidative stress biomarkers in urine samples from preterm infants (≤32 weeks of gestation and a birth weight ≤1500 g) receiving ≥80% of feeding volume as either DHM or OMM. The noninvasive in vivo assessment of oxidative stress showed no statistically significant difference between both groups at the time when full enteral nutrition (150 mL/kg body weight) was achieved and until hospital discharge. In addition, t…

Complication of endoscopic tattooing: a case report of covered perforation

2016

Aim Laparoscopy is considered a good approach in treatment of colorectal neoplastic diseases; the endoscopic tattooing is then recommended (Evidence Level III and grade of recommendation A) to mark a lesion or a polypectomy site for intraoperative identification. We describe the case of perforation after tattoing treated conservatively. Case report 63 years old woman, underwent colonoscopy for lipoma tattooing with India ink SPOT® solution kit and saline test. Immediately after the procedure the patient has been referred the appearance of colic epi-mesogastric pain and fever; Computed Tomography (CT) without MDC identified an irregular thickening of transverse colon with some microbubbles c…

Absorption of Drugs after Oral Administration

2007

After oral administration, drugs must be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract to achieve the systemic circulation and exert their pharmacological effects. The successful formulation of an optimized oral drug delivery system requires a detailed consideration and a good understanding of the intestinal absorption process, its possibilities and limitations. This article gives an overview and update on the concepts, possibilities, and limitations of drug absorption after oral administration. Keywords: oral administration; drug absorption; oral drug delivery system; gastrointestinal tract; intestinal absorption

Different types of intestinal atresia in identical twins

2008

The authors present a previously unreported association of different types of intestinal atresia in identical low-birth-weight twins. Both babies were affected by duodenal atresia, associated in the first case with a complete mucosal duodenal membrane and in the second one with an "apple-peel" jejunal atresia. These occurrences may suggest that they were either the consequence of linkage of 2 genes or a pleiotropic expression of a single gene responsible for such rare conditions.

Thiamine for the treatment of nucleoside analogue-induced severe lactic acidosis

1999

Nucleoside analogue-induced lactic acidosis is an often fatal condition in patients with HIV. There is only one report of successful treatment with riboflavin. We describe a 30-year-old female with AIDS and nucleoside analogue-induced lactic acidosis that exacerbated shortly after introducing total parenteral nutrition and reversed within hours after the addition of thiamine. Successful treatment of nucleoside analogue-induced lactic acidosis with a high dose of thiamine supports the hypothesis that vitamin deficiency is an important cofactor in the development of this rare and unpredictable condition in patients with HIV. We suggest that high dose B-vitamins should be given to any patient …
