What Makes for Fair Schooling?
2007
Slogans calling for “une ecole juste” (fair schooling) are often as vague as they are effective in mobilising public opinion: though there is apparent agreement on the desirability of greater fairness in education, the matter of defining fair schooling parameters is extremely complex and riddled with ambiguity.
Landscape of Exception as Spatial and Social Interaction Between High-Quality Agricultural Production and Immigrant Labour Exploitation
2021
This Chapter analyses the spatial and social interaction phenomena between high-quality agricultural production and immigrant labour exploita- tion that produce the landscape of exception, a particular declination of the Agambenian (2005) “state of exception” concept. The landscape of exception construction mechanism is generated within South-Eastern Sicily through the productive system of greenhouses, finalised to the vegetables production. Green- houses, in particular, represent an effective tool for spatial manipulation over the landscape and social control of migrant workers. In relation to these considerations, this work reflects on ethical challenges and dilemmas of planning, highligh…
An overdetermined problem for the anisotropic capacity
2015
We consider an overdetermined problem for the Finsler Laplacian in the exterior of a convex domain in \({\mathbb {R}}^{N}\), establishing a symmetry result for the anisotropic capacitary potential. Our result extends the one of Reichel (Arch Ration Mech Anal 137(4):381–394, 1997), where the usual Newtonian capacity is considered, giving rise to an overdetermined problem for the standard Laplace equation. Here, we replace the usual Euclidean norm of the gradient with an arbitrary norm H. The resulting symmetry of the solution is that of the so-called Wulff shape (a ball in the dual norm \(H_0\)).

Exploring the Relationship Between Business Elite Networks and Income Inequality in Latin American Countries
2018
Although the cohesion of business elites has been associated with income concentration, few studies have in-depth investigated the role of business elite networks in macro-social issues such as economic inequality. This research explores the relationship between business elite networks and income inequality in several Latin American countries. To do so, this paper 1) examine business elite networks applying a network analysis of interlocking directorates, and 2) establishes the link and complementarities between the level of cohesion of business elite networks and income inequality. Results show that where business elite formed cohesive networks and economy was export-oriented, social prote…
Élites Empresariales y Desigualdad en Tiempos de Pandemia en América Latina (Business Elites and Inequality in Times of Pandemic in Latin America)
2020

A formal proof of the e-optimality of discretized pursuit algorithms
2015
Learning Automata (LA) can be reckoned to be the founding algorithms on which the field of Reinforcement Learning has been built. Among the families of LA, Estimator Algorithms (EAs) are certainly the fastest, and of these, the family of discretized algorithms are proven to converge even faster than their continuous counterparts. However, it has recently been reported that the previous proofs for ??-optimality for all the reported algorithms for the past three decades have been flawed. We applaud the researchers who discovered this flaw, and who further proceeded to rectify the proof for the Continuous Pursuit Algorithm (CPA). The latter proof examines the monotonicity property of the proba…
Indirect Sexism in John Grisham’s Sycamore Row (2013): Unveiling Sexual Inequality Through a Gender-Committed Pedagogy in the Translation Classroom
2019
In the ongoing fight for sexual equality, discourse and translation are key mechanisms, that deserve careful scrutiny. This chapter describes a teaching experience within my Legal Translation (English–Spanish) module at the University of Valencia. Students were required to translate some passages from Sycamore Row (2013), a best-selling legal thriller by John Grisham. In class, we analyzed and discussed these passages and compared them with the students’ translations as well as with the 2014commercial Spanish version, entitled La herencia. Sexist and/or patronizing comments are common in this book, disguised under the veil of irony or humour. Thus, John Grisham manages—through humour and ir…
Effect of aerobic exercise and diet on liver fat in pre-diabetic patients with non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease: A randomized controlled trial.
2017
AbstractThe study aimed to assess whether aerobic exercise (AEx) training and a fibre-enriched diet can reduce hepatic fat content (HFC) and increase glycaemic control in pre-diabetic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Six-hundred-and-three patients from seven clinics in Yangpu district, Shanghai, China were recruited. Of them 115 individuals aged 50–65-year fulfilled the inclusion criteria (NAFLD with impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance) and were randomly assigned into exercise (AEx n = 29), diet (Diet n = 28), exercise plus diet (AED n = 29), or no-intervention (NI n = 29) groups. Progressive supervised AEx training (60–75% VO2max intensity) was gi…
