PROFITABILITY OF SMALL LOQUAT FARMS IN SICILY

The northern Sicilian coastline, known for its favorable soil and climatic conditions, represents the main production area in Italy for loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.). Over the years, the absence of process innovation and appropriate marketing strategies caused a gradual decline of loquat cultivation. This study estimates the profitability of some representative Sicilian farms that grow loquat in the area of Trabia (Palermo Province), where this crop is important for the local economy. The results highlighted a productive scenario characterized by high production costs, where only a family farm that supplies much of its own labor can survive.

Microspore Culture in eleven Cultivars of Loquat

In plant breeding, microspore embryogenesis via isolated microspore culture is increasing as a method to obtain in a single-step doubled haploids and homozygosity. In this study, isolated microspore culture of eleven cultivars of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.) has been carried out. An analysis of anthers from different flower bud sizes, has been carried out, to identify and to select the flower bud size with anthers containing the highest quantity of vacuolated microspores. Temperature regulating floral bud differentiation in loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.). Hormonal and genetic aspects

In loquat, apex of a current shoot changes from vegetative to reproductive stage during summer, i.e. under high temperature conditions. Indeed, just before floral bud differentiation, a decline in the growth rate due to high temperature takes place. Use of seeds from local loquat ecotypes for rootstock production

In Italy loquat (Eriobotrya japonica, Lindl) seedlings are commonly produced in nurseries as rootstocks for commercial loquat orchards. Seedling production is characterized by low germination percentage and a slow plant growth.The aim of this study was to evaluate local ecotypes seeds of loquat for seedlings production. Some ecotypes (Bianco dolce, BRT20, Claudia, Fiore, La Mantia and Marcenò) and international cultivars (Algerie, Golden Nugget, Magdal, Peluche and Tanaka) were compared. Evaluation of morphological and genetic diversity of loquat accessions grown in sicily

In this study 20 accessions of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) that originated from Sicily and other countries were characterized phenotypically and genotyped using seven microsatellite markers. The microsatellites clearly distinguished 14 accessions; three pairs of local accessions were not differentiated, and three accessions from abroad can be considered bud sport mutations of the main Spanish cultivar ‘Algerie’. The mean alleles per locus was four, ranging from two with the marker EJ075 and five with EJ012 and EJ271; the mean Polymorphic Information Content was 0.53; the average expected and observed heterozygosities resulted 0.62 and 0.59, respectively. FIRST STAGES OF MICROSPORE REPROGRAMMING TO EMBRYOGENESIS THROUGH ISOLATED MICROSPORE CULTURE IN LOQUAT

The current experiments were undertaken to develop a method for regenerating doubled haploid (DH) plants of Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.), Rosaceae, subfamily Maloideae through isolated microspore culture of nine loquat cultivars. Protocols were developed for isolation and culture of loquat microspores. Isolated microspores in vitro cultured started dividing and developing multicellular, globular and irregular structures. After 4 weeks of culture, the responding microspores produced yellowish/white callus. The embryogenic response of microspores was highly dependent on the cultivar and on the medium composition.

CHEMICAL AND SENSORY CHARACTERISTICS OF FIVE LOQUAT CULTIVARS

Fruit quality can be evaluated by combining chemical-physical and sensory analyses. In this trial, both instrumental and sensory analyses were carried out on fruit of 5 loquat cultivars (‘Nespolone di Trabia’, ‘Sanfilippara’, ‘Virticchiara’, ‘MarcenA²â€™ and ‘Golden Nugget’), with the aim of assessing their commercial quality. Fruit weight, transversal and longitudinal diameter, total soluble solid content (TSS), and titratable acidity (TA) were measured. Growth, Yield and Fruit Quality of 'Peluche' Loquat under Windbreak Nets.

The advantages of protecting 6-year-old ‘Peluche’ loquat trees (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) with nets were investigated in Sicily. Vegetative and reproductive growth were measured on 20 trees under net protection and 20 in open field conditions. A neutral, 50% windbreak net (yielding 70% of light penetration) was positioned around the field and above trees to cut down wind action and other occasional extreme atmospheric phenomena. Side openings were left on the nets to provide the entrance for pollinators.
