Between Scylla and Charibdis: eIF2α kinases as targets for cancer chemotherapy

2011

[EN] The eIF2 alpha kinases integrate translation initiation rates with nutrient availability, thus allowing cells to adapt to nutrient scarcity. Recent evidence has uncovered new functions of these kinases in tumour cell biology, ranging from regulation of cell cycle progression, maintenance of genome stability, control of apoptosis, and cell survival under nutrient stress and hypoxia. Accordingly, active eIF2 alpha kinases modulate the antineoplasic activity of several antitumour drugs, either by exacerbating their cytotoxic effect or by promoting chemoresistance. Understanding of eIF2 alpha kinases molecular roles may provide mechanistic insights into how tumour cells sense and adapt to …

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Inhibition Protects against Excitotoxic Neuronal Injury in the Rat Brain

2007

Elevated brain glutamate with activation of neuronal glutamate receptors accompanies neurological disorders, such as epilepsy and brain trauma. However, the mechanisms by which excitotoxicity triggers neuronal injury are not fully understood. We have studied the glutamate receptor agonist kainic acid (KA) inducing seizures and excitotoxic cell death. KA caused the disintegration of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane in hippocampal neurons and ER stress with the activation of the ER proteins Bip, Chop, and caspase-12. Salubrinal, inhibiting eIF2α (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit α) dephosphorylation, significantly reduced KA-induced ER stress and neuronal deathin vivo…

Resource or waste? A perspective of plastics degradation in soil with a focus on end-of-life options.

2018

‘Capable-of-being-shaped’ synthetic compounds are prevailing today over horn, bone, leather, wood, stone, metal, glass, or ceramic in products that were previously left to natural materials. Plastic is, in fact, economical, simple, adaptable, and waterproof. Also, it is durable and resilient to natural degradation (although microbial species capable of degrading plastics do exist). In becoming a waste, plastic accumulation adversely affects ecosystems. The majority of plastic debris pollutes waters, accumulating in oceans. And, the behaviour and the quantity of plastic, which has become waste, are rather well documented in the water, in fact. This review collects existing information on pla…

SPEEK membrānu hidratācijas – dehidratācijas pētījumi

2015

2016

Sulfurēta poli(ēterēterketona) un cirkonija hidrogēnfosfāta nanodaļiņu kompozītmembrānu sintēze un to fizikālķīmisko īpašību analīze. Markus M., zinātniskais vadītājs Dr.ķīm. Guntars Vaivars, konsultants Dr. h. ķīm., prof. Andris Zicmanis.

Adolescents’ online communication and well-being : Findings from the 2018 health behavior in school-aged children (HBSC) study

2022

Background: Digital transformation has influenced all areas of adolescents’ lives, including the ways adolescents maintain friendships. Interpersonal communication is one of the most common activities while online. Online communication may provide adolescents with opportunities to expand their social contacts, but these encounters can be risky, especially when the communication is with unknown people on the internet. This study examined the associations between different forms of online communication behavior and well-being. Materials and methods: Data were collected from Finnish adolescents as part of the Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study in 2018. The participants were 3…

Ureteru akmeņu endoskopiskās ārstēšanas iespējas

2016

Isolated superior oblique palsies with electrophysiologically documented brainstem lesions

2000

Over a 13.5-year period, we observed 10 patients with isolated superior oblique palsies in whom electrophysiological abnormalities indicated brainstem lesions. In 7 patients unilateral masseter reflex abnormalities were seen, and were located on the side of the superior oblique palsy in 2 patients and on the opposite side in 5 patients. Two patients had slowed gain of following eye movements to the side contralateral to the superior oblique palsy. Slowed adduction saccades in the eye contralateral to the superior oblique palsy were seen in 1 patient. Clinical improvement was frequently (in 7 of 10 patients) associated with improvement or normalization of electrophysiologic findings. Magneti…

17. Masseter reflex abnormalities with meso-diencephalic lesions

2012

different papers and some eponyms used to characterize a certain neurological state differ from the original description. Except for Wallenberg‘s syndrome, classical brainstem syndromes are rarely seen in clinical practice. Lacunar brainstem syndromes are the consequence of infarcts, which involve long tracts and spare intra-axial cranial nerve segments. This group includes pure motor or pure sensory stroke, dysarthriaclumsy hand syndrome, or ataxic hemiparesis. Such infarcts may also cause body lateropulsion with or without limb ataxia, internuclear ophthalmoplgia, skew-torsion sign, or ocular tilt reaction. Small deep infarcts, which solely affect certain nuclei, may be followed by horizo…
