TEATRO MUSICAL Y PERSPECTIVA DE GÉNERO: LA OBRA SICALÍPTICA DE VICENTE LLEÓ DURANTE SU ETAPA EN EL TEATRO ESLAVA DE MADRID (1907-1912)

2020

States of Exception: Auto-immunity and the Body Politic in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus

2010

The essay starts by referring to a central moment in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, when the Roman hero reacts to his banishment by banishing: “I banish you!" (3.3.123). These lines, the essay argues, provide, in a condensed form, a radical shift of perspective on the question of the boundaries of Rome: how far does Rome extend? Can Rome banish herself ? Does Rome move with Coriolanus as he moves “elsewhere” (3. 3. 135)? They also force the audience to reconsider the "nature" of the political decision that leads to the ban. Taking its cue from this line, the essay shows that the question of boundaries in Coriolanus is intimately connected with the uncanny logic of "auto-immunity" which affects R…

«Un baciar furioso, un dispogliarsi»:Costanzo Festa and eroticism

2009

Sappho, Hegel and Michael Field: Paradox and desire in lyric III

2021

This article offers a close reading of Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper’s lyric III in Long Ago, a Sapphic volume of verse published in 1889 under the collaborative nom de plume of Michael Field. This collection articulates a dramatic inquiry into the tragedy of unrequited love in a long cycle of lyrics whose third piece most effectively encapsulates the kernel of what the Fields reconstruct as Sappho’s ambivalent eroticism. The outcome of this reconstruction, as analysed in light of lyric III, is a consistent Hegelian view of desire that subsumes a complex system of tropes, myths, paradoxes and imaginative strategies under an overarching ideology of desire as a radical experience of appr…

Richard Francis Burton. Victorian Explorer and Translator

2012

This volume offers a critical insight into the life and work of the controversial Victorian explorer and translator Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). Analysis focuses on his travel accounts and erotic translations, which both re-elaborated and challenged dominant Victorian discourses on race, gender and sexuality, generating controversies in the fields of anthropology, sexology and medicine. The premise of the study is that Burton entertained an ambiguous relationship with the colonial institutions: on the one hand, he pursued the colonial project, while on the other, he was an irreverent outsider who clashed with the imperial authorities. As this investigation reveals, he defied British …

2023

In his work entitled Nasīm al-ṣabā (The Breeze of the East Wind), Ibn Ḥabīb al-Ḥalabī (d. 1377) dedicates a chapter to the description of a young man (ġulām). This chapter is characterized by the presence of two parts which differ from a stylistic point of view. This paper deals with the central part of the chapter, which is entirely descriptive. The description of the ephebe in this central part shows great detail both descriptively (regarding the physical features of the ephebe) and thematically (regarding the topics used). In this part, the descriptive topics of the ephebe present in the classical homoerotic ġazal are transposed and reformulated in saǧ‘ (rhymed prose). A salient feature …

Wstydliwy problem erotyzmu

2017

Usually we are ashamed to touch the issue of eroticism, although it is a ąuite natural one and, in fact, very close to us. It seems that roots of this shyness date back to the biblical paradise and to the original sin committed by the first people. Since the exile from paradise the erotic sphere is a kind of taboo that we are afraid to invade. Bataille measures wits with this problem very courageously, showing that eroticism played a key role in the pagan religions. With a help of eroticism it was possible to make a transgression (exceed ban), reach sacrum and thereby fully experience the existence. Then Christianity distanced to eroticism and, paradoxically, by associating it with unclean …
