RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SERUM URIC ACID AND AORTIC STIFFNESS IN UNTREATED HYPERTENSIVE SUBJECTS

2013

Recent studies have reported an association between serum uric acid (SUA) and reduced arterial elasticity. However, in these studies arterial elastic properties have been assessed chiefly by measuring brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (PWV) or peripheral PWV and only sometimes by using aortic PWV. Moreover, the relationships between SUA and arterial stiffness have never been statistically adjusted for albuminuria. Furthermore, the studies exploring the influence of uric acid on aortic distensibility in subjects with arterial hypertension yielded conflicting results. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationships between SUA and aortic stiffness in a group of essential hypertensive …

Intrinsic characterizations of perturbation classes on some Banach spaces

2010

We investigate relationships between inessential operators and improjective operators acting between Banach spaces X and Y, emphasizing the case in which one of the spaces is a C(K) space. We show that they coincide in many cases, but they are different in the case X=Y =C(K 0), where K 0 is a compact space constructed by Koszmider. Tangential behavior of functions and conical densities of Hausdorff measures.

2005

We construct a $C^1$-function $f\colon [0,1]\to \mathbb{R}$ such that for almost all $x\in(0,1)$, there is $r>0$ for which $f(y)>f(x)+f'(x)(y-x)$ when $y\in(x,x+r)$ and $f(y)< f(x)+f'(x)(y-x)$ when $y\in(x-r,x)$. The existence of such functions is related to a problem concerning conical density properties of Hausdorff measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also discuss the tangential behavior of typical $C^1$-functions, using an improvement of Jarnik's theorem on essential derived numbers

Rectifiability of RCD(K,N) spaces via δ-splitting maps

2021

In this note we give simplified proofs of rectifiability of RCD(K,N) spaces as metric measure spaces and lower semicontinuity of the essential dimension, via -splitting maps. The arguments are inspired by the Cheeger-Colding theory for Ricci limits and rely on the second order differential calculus developed by Gigli and on the convergence and stability results by Ambrosio-Honda. peerReviewed

The Beneficial Effects of Essential Oils in Anti-Obesity Treatment

2021

Obesity is a complex disease caused by an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity is a medical problem and represents an important risk factor for the development of serious diseases such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some types of cancer. Not to be overlooked are the psychological issues that, in obese subjects, turn into very serious pathologies, such as depression, phobias, anxiety, and lack of self-esteem. In addition to modifying one’s lifestyle, the reduction of body mass can be promoted by different natural compounds such as essential oils (EOs). EOs are mixtures of aromatic substances produced by many plants, particularly in medicinal and aromatic…

Effects of Plant Density on the Number of Glandular Trichomes and on Yield and Quality of Essential Oils from Oregano.

2016

Plants yields are influenced by agronomic techniques. Plant density is a complex issue and extremely important when maximizing both crop quality, and biomass and essential oil yields. Plants belonging to the Origanum vulgare subspecies hirtum (Link) Ietswaart were grown adopting four types of plant density and were characterized in biometric and chemical terms. The samples were analyzed using the ANOVA (Principal Component Analysis) statistical method regarding biometric aspects, EO yield and peltate hair density. Essential oil (EO) was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed using GC-FID and GC-MS. GC-FID and GC-MS analysis led to the identification of 45 compounds from the EO. Plant …

Antihypertensive and cardiovascular effects of combined blockade of renin-angiotensin system with ACE inhibitor and angiotensin II type 1 receptor bl…

2006

BACKGROUND.: In this study the effects of 24 weeks losartan and ramipril treatment, both alone and in combination, on blood pressure and left ventricular mass (LVM) and function, have been evaluated in hypertensives. METHODS.: 57 hypertensives with stage 1 and 2 essential hypertension were included. After 4 weeks run in, a randomized double-blind, 3 arm, double dummy, independent trial was used. All patients were randomly allocated to 3 treatment arms consisting of losartan (50 mg/daily), ramipril (5 mg/daily), and combined (losartan 50 mg/ramipril 5 mg/daily) for 24 weeks. LVM, LVM/h(2.7) and other echocardiographic measurements, BUN, creatinine and clearance and potassium were determined …

The Candida albicans UBI3 gene encoding a hybrid ubiquitin fusion protein involved in ribosome biogenesis is essential for growth.

2003

We have constructed a conditional null mutant Candida albicans strain for the UBI3 gene which encodes a ubiquitin fusion protein involved in ribosome biogenesis. A one-step gene disruption procedure, using the plasmid pCaDis, was designed to place the second copy of the UBI3 gene under the control of the tightly regulated MET3 promoter in a C. albicans heterozygous strain (UBI3/Deltaubi3::hisG), previously isolated in the first step of the ura-blaster protocol. Analysis of the conditional null mutant in repressing and inducing conditions indicates that UBI3 is an essential gene whose expression is required for growth of C. albicans.
