Verkörperung: Bild und Experiment bei Edgar Wind und die aktuelle Lage der morphologischen Forschung
2021
Edgar Wind’s The Experiment and Metaphysics examines, in the sense of Goethe’s morphological project, the common structures of scientific and artistic thinking in the light of the reflective value of the image and the technological processes of research and construction of reality. In Wind’s philosophy of em- bodiment the image plays a role in the artistic field comparable to the function of experiments in science. The picture is neither a ‘copy’ nor just a ‘part’ of reality, but rather an ‘embodiment’: at the same time the ‘result’ of human activity and a ‘condition’ for all interpretation of the world. It opens up as an embodiment to a temporality which is not just linear but ‘configured’…
Housing Memories in Riga: WWI and Its Aftermath—Representation of the Apartment in Soviet Cinema and Now
2020
Geography of film provides information on new historiographic perspectives in architecture, space and the imagination of urban environment. This chapter contributes to the field of human geography by conducting a content analysis of a vast number of films made between the early 1910s and present time focusing on development and spatial organization of living spaces in Riga. The research elucidates the construction of meaning of space and housing memory, where relations of dominance is defined and contested in visual representation of Riga’s apartments. A qualitative research methodology was used based on best practices of human geography data transcription and coding. The main findings show…
Der hermeneutische Akt des Übersetzens. Schleiermacher und die Literaturverfilmung
2015
Friedrich Schleiermacher’s notion of translation can be applied productively to the dialogical relationship of literature and film. Whilst a literary translator translates the original text into the target language, thus stepping back behind the original, this process is entirely different in the case of literary adaptation. Here it is the director who takes the author’s place, ostensibly causing the original text to disappear. Furthermore, the translation of a literary text into the language of cinema is an interpretative engagement with, and an attempt to better understand, the original work. In contrast with translation in a stricter sense, which has by its nature a duty to uphold and to…
Music and Emotion: Empirical and Theoretical Perspectives
2014
One of the key reasons people engage with music, whether as listener or performer, therapist or researcher, is because of its emotional impact. Music comforts us when we’re sad, lifts us up in happier times, bonds us together. We use music to modify our mood, augment current feelings, release tension. Given the ever-growing presence of music in our everyday lives, the investigation of issues related to and subsequent dissemination of knowledge concerning music and emotion is becoming increasingly relevant. This special issue is based on work presented at the 3rd International Conference on Music & Emotion (ICME3) organised by the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Music Resea…
Estētikas un funkcionalitātes aspekti sporta zālē
2021
Diplomdarbā “Estētiskie un funkcionālie aspekti sporta zālē”, analizējot pieejamo literatūru, tiek apskatīta estētikas nozīme un funkcionalitātes aspekti sporta zālē. Darba autore secina, ka Latvijā ir skolas, kuru sporta zāles kalpo tikai tām paredzētajai funkcijai, to interjers nav vizuāli patīkams apmeklētājiem. Darba mērķis ir izstrādāt pārdomātu, drošu, funkcionālu un vizuāli patīkamu interjera dizaina 3D projektu Āgenskalna Valsts ģimnāzijas sporta zālei.
You realise you are better when you want to live, want to go out, want to see people: Recovery as assemblage
2021
Background: The lack of social and material perspectives in descriptions of recovery processes is almost common in recovery research. Aim: Consequently, we investigated recovery stories and how people with mental health and/or addiction challenges included social and material aspects in these stories. Method: We conducted focus group and individual interviews. We investigated how the participants narrated their stories and how they assembled places and people in their recovery stories. Results: We found that narratives of recovery became assemblages where humans and their environments co-exist and are interdependent. Conclusion: As such, narratives about recovery are about everyday assembla…
General anaesthetics and the developing brain: an overview
2014
Various experimental studies in animals have shown that general anaesthetics are potentially toxic to the developing brain. By inducing apoptosis or interfering with neurogenesis, anaesthetic exposure during a critical period of neuronal development can have significant impact on neurocognitive function later in life. It remains controversial whether these experimental results can be transferred to human beings and this is under intensive scientific evaluation. To gain more insight into possible neurotoxic effects on the human brain of infants and small children, a number of retrospective studies have been performed. At present, there is no clear evidence that exposure to anaesthesia up to …
Pharmacology of Ischemia-Reperfusion. Translational Research Considerations.
2016
Ischemia-reperfusion (IRI) is a complex physiopathological mechanism involving a large number of metabolic processes that can eventually lead to cell apoptosis and ultimately tissue necrosis. Treatment approaches intended to reduce or palliate the effects of IRI are varied, and are aimed basically at: inhibiting cell apoptosis and the complement system in the inflammatory process deriving from IRI, modulating calcium levels, maintaining mitochondrial membrane integrity, reducing the oxidative effects of IRI and levels of inflammatory cytokines, or minimizing the action of macrophages, neutrophils, and other cell types. This study involved an extensive, up-to-date review of the bibliography …
Nuovi media, nuova estetica?
2015
