Will legal international rhino horn trade save wild rhino populations?
2020
Wild vertebrate populations all over the globe are in decline, with poaching being the second-most-important cause. The high poaching rate of rhinoceros may drive these species into extinction within the coming decades. Some stakeholders argue to lift the ban on international rhino horn trade to potentially benefit rhino conservation, as current interventions appear to be insufficient. We reviewed scientific and grey literature to scrutinize the validity of reasoning behind the potential benefit of legal horn trade for wild rhino populations. We identified four mechanisms through which legal trade would impact wild rhino populations, of which only the increased revenue for rhino farmers cou…

STTEPping in the right direction? Western classical music in an orchestral programme for disadvantaged African youth
2008
This article looks at STTEP, an outreach project currently housed at the University of Pretoria, which concentrates on the teaching of western orchestral instruments, plus background areas such as music theory, to disadvantaged children and youth from a variety of townships around Pretoria, South Africa. STTEP’s direction can well be described as ‘right’ – pupils are already surrounded by all kinds of global phenomena, and their formal music studies in western classical music are not making them forget their roots. In fact, the contrary has been found to be the case and some interesting cultural fusions are already seen – always a sign of a living culture.

Collaboration between non-governmental organizations and educational leaders in capacity development in rural South Africa
2013
Skills development has been a point of urgency since the advent of progressive governance in democratic South Africa. Despite many efforts through the National Skills Development Strategies and partnerships, the situation still remains worrisome especially in rural context. The study aimed to identify how the NGOs and education leaders collaborate in skills development, its impact, and possible ways of optimizing such practices. A methodology that considers the perspectives of individuals experiencing the phenomenon was invoked. Accordingly, this study exploits the phenomenological approach. Participants were purposely selected from Sector Education Training Authorities and NGOs involved in…
Narratives on access to higher education : educational leadership looking beyond barriers
2017
This research aims to understand the social, economic and political complexities that surround a learner’s access to higher education in South Africa. The study looks at the experiences of four young men and women (two men and two women) from South Africa that led to their educational achievements. It weaves their success stories through the complex interwoven social, familial, school and community environments. The narratives have been observed in con-text to existing key educational leadership theories and mainly by evaluati…

Docpoint: Etelä-Afrikan horjuva ikoni
2017
Transmission processes of indigenous Pedi music
2017
There has been unsatisfactory integration of traditional music into education, despite the fact that the Ministry of Education advocates its use, stating that education should ‘preserve South Africa’s cultural practice; develop an appreciation for the practice of one’s culture; and develop a sense of respect for other people’s culture’. South Africa is in need of a music education philosophy that is culturally embedded, cognisant of the societal context in which it is to function, and informed by South African ideas and philosophy of life. This study entails sourcing the Ethnomusicological and Anthropological focus in musicology for purposes of providing a better understanding on music and …
