Photographic exhibitions are organized today outside to attract those who do not attend museums and galleries. I studied the "non-public" (Ancel & Pessin, 2004) : the absents, those to whom they are intended, but that do not attend. What are the factors hindering the encounter with the works despite their urban exposure mode ? Our article aims to reconstitute the image- and speech-making process regarding the “suburbs” through the filming of a documentary on “how young people on the high-rise estates perceive the war in Iraq”. What are the factors hindering the encounter with the works despite their urban exposure? The article attempts to study the performances of culture that are forged by the respondents (migrants from the lower classes) during outings organized by community centers or municipal associations.
